I recently inventoried my ammo, and am looking to add and replace the desiccant packs.

Which ones are you guys using in your ammo cans?

I buy so much crap for my family and myself I just use the ones that come in all the junk I collect. It seems like a lot, I probably have 2 50 cal cans packed full.

Should these be replaced and if so how often?

Desiccant pouches are reusable.........pop them in the oven, use low heat to draw the moisture out and done and done.

Desiccant packs are the old way I did it, been using VCI emitters/bags for ~7 years and then forget about any chance of corrosion. No need to heavily oil guns at all or golden rods.

Believe me, we get a bit of humidity, which activates the VCI to work better. Desiccants work, but it's outdated to what's available.

IMO, VCI is what you seek.

Unscented crystal cat litter in an old sock works well too.

I use this type, not specifically the Pelican brand. One in each ammo can. Reactivate according to the instructions on the container when needed.

ETA I usually stock up when Midway has these on sale

I really should buy some of those. I just went on a little spree buying ammo cans and filling them with 5.56 and 22lr.  I'm at a point where I don't want to spend more, but I probably should get a dessicant pack for each can.

I got these from amazon. Cheap and you can get them in large packs. I put 2 in each 50 cal can.

Beef jerky, vitamins, Chinese light fixtures. If you work residential new construction (or know an electrician) those fixtures have some decent ones, and they're free.

I get the big, Two Units, bags of desi from work for free. They throw them away all the freeking time. So I grab the big ones when ever I see them and toss them in nitrogen dry boxes at work then after about a week I take them.

Buy one of the 7.5 lb jugs of orange indicating (turns green when moist) get some cheapo nylons and make your own! Quite cost effective as you can reuse them almost forever!

I buy the 10lb bags of 100% sillica gel kitty litter from WalMart, and fill coffee filters with them.  They have blue bead indicators.  Cost was around $8 including filters.

Used the same with ladies knee hi's hosiery, they tie off no mess/spill.

I may have to try the hoisery as a pouch.   I fold the coffee filters and staple closed.  Look just like the large dessicant packs.  Never a spill, but the hosiery may provide better moisture absorbtion.

+1 For the D&D packs on Amazon. Hard to beat the price and they seem to work fine.

I read the knee high tip some years ago, been using it with good success. May try an open un-stapled coffee filter to use as the place to hold the hosiery tie offs vs. risking touching a metal surface.

I use those dry and dry from Amazon or ones from silicagelpackets.com

Amazon has better prices.
I always use the indicating packets in my ammo cans

Any of the thousands that otherwise fill up the trash cans at my pharmacy.  Bupropion bottles have some of the best
