I'm looking for a set of vise jaws or a barrel clamp to install/remove muzzle devices... I've done a bit of searching on amazon and have pretty much just found the wheeler barrel clamp and generic plastic vise jaws. The wheeler seems like it is what I am looking for but  has .850", .66", and .53" openings. I've got a .740 diameter barrel with a rocksetted on brake so I wasn't sure how well the wheeler device would work given some of the questionable feedback I've seen on it. Has anyone tried the generic plastic vise jaws on a barrel? Any recommendations?

All it takes is a couple of pieces of hardwood with a V notch cut in each.  I use a couple of clamps but you can put them in a vice as well.  Baking soda and flour for rosin.

Edit: For a rocksett muzzle device, you might have to soak it in water over night.  Had one that was impossible to remove without soaking.

Universal fit for any 4 wide vise (fits larger vise as well)
V Groove fits large or small diameter barrels or round stock
NO-M.A.R polymer soft yet strong, gentle on polished metal
Good for light to medium duty barrel holding chores
Resists a Small amount of rotational Force
CNC machined excellent fit and finish

I see that caveat they post, but I have used them to remove some seriously stuck flash hiders.  They work well, I have had them for years

So have I, works fine.  The Wheeler aluminum with rubber inserts works better though.

In the past 20 years, I have bought 4 Wheeler items, and they all sucked.
Glad you are having better luck.

I bought aluminum jaws from Brownell's, and they have done everything I've asked of them.
If I clamp on a blued, or black barrel, I just use a couple layers of paper. Never hurt the finish.

I tried wood blocks, fancy aluminum blocks with inserts, leather with rosin, and on one of mine had to dremel it off.

Lots of carbon has kinda welded it.

I prefer a 'reaction rod' for muzzle device work.

Actually a poor choice for removing muzzle devices unless it has the rib on top a la the MI version.

Nah.  Been using a geissele super for years without issue.

If you have something over torqued or unknown the potential is there with other variants, sure.

Proper use goes a long way.  ymmv

I have yet to need to soak anything with Rocksett and remove them pretty often....I fully expect to run into a problem now lol.

I have a set of aluminum ones that hold strong but cannot find where I bought them. I have had them for years.

It only takes one time with a stuck MD and an undertorqued extension, or soft index pin.  It is always best to clamp the barrel for MD work.

I think I got these from Amazon. I’ve removed and installed a few muzzle devices. For the price I think they’re worth having. I often clamp a rifle by the hand guard for scope installation type things with no worry of scratching it up.

Proper procedure is to clamp the bbl for muzzle devices.

I like that. My aluminum one leaves marks but it comes off pretty easy.

Have a set of yellow ones like that, didn't work well for me for muzzle work.  Possibly due to the yellow being a bit softer as I know those are made in different densities.  Needless to say I use them all time for holding all sorts of things.

Mine are a little softer than I’d like them to be, too. I still use them more often than I use the vise without them.
