btw PSA has Mag tactical lowers on sale 89.99
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/mag-tactical-systems-ar-15-ultralight-stripped-lower-receiver-mg-g4-blk-black.html |
|
I assembled my lower today.
If you add the CAR stock, which I like btw, it will come in at 633 grams or 22.33oz for the complete lower. I don't have all the upper parts in yet, but my estimates put it at 930 grams or 32.8oz. This can change. But at this rate the entire rig would be ~3.5lbs. This is a Mag Tactical build. I am doing some experimenting with this setup, some things which I may/may not like include: Accu-Group Poly Lower Parts (3oz Savings over a Milspec pack) Tac Com Delrin buffer (Will have an adjustable gas block) I am looking for: Poly / Aluminium Grip Screw (Nominal savings) Lighter Grip (A2 I have comes in at 67 grams) Lighter Buffer Tube (if there is such a thing) the one that I have is 105 grams. This will be a pistol pending the NFA Papers in progress. |

I'm building a lightweight at the moment as well. Here are the specs;

My estimate is being in the low 5 pound range. |
|
Well, based on my lightweight rifle database project, I am now projecting my current rifle will be 5 lbs, 13 oz when complete, or 5 lbs, 15.5 oz with some Magpul BUIS.
We will see how close I get to my theoretical / calculated weight. Based on my research, it should be possible in theory to build a rifle at 4 lbs, 7 oz without a polymer lower or modifying any of the parts- parts cost for such a rifle is about $1600. |

Huge thanks Pursuit.
I did find the V7 Buffer Tube that comes in at 93 grams, whereas the one that I had from a CAR kit came in at 105 grams. These are very small amounts, but I have cut everywhere I can think of and it all adds up. The upper and lower will both be MAG Tactical which is a Magnesium Alloy. I will not be going with a carbon fiber handguard to save an ounce over the KMR since I want a top rail and a flexible system to use for mounting. I am going to try the Spikes Ti BCG as soon as I can along with TAC COM delrin buffer and syrac adjustable gas block if no other options come out. The Accu-Group poly FCG and other Lower Parts are also experimental for me, the trigger feels better than a milspec to me when I work the action. If no issues come up, it saves 3oz or so over a milspec parts kit. It will never be geissele, but it may be sufficient for this build. If I have issues I will swap out on a per group basis. I can use V7 Pins, Spikes new Light weight FCG, etc. The barrel is going to be turned down to pencil weight, and around 10" long so this not a full length class firearm for the purposes of this thread. I will post precise weight spreadsheet and pictures once it's all assembled. Estimated at 3.5lbs. Parts I am waiting for: KMR 10 Spikes Ti BCG Syrac Adjustable Gas Block |

| On the barrel, you might look at a diameter of .550 - .565 |

The rest will be turned down as much as is within safety limits. Since this is not complete yet, I am estimating barrel weight currently. This is probably my biggest variable, altough there are other parts I do not have yet so I have not weighed I have weights from the manufacturers I am going off of., Originally Posted By PiccoloPlayer:

Nada,
Do you have an upper with a forward assist? I'm putting a titanium unit in my Mag Tactical Systems upper. The titanium forward assist is about .4 ounces lighter than Milspec. Supposedly they're making other colors besides polished titanium. I ordered one last night. I plan to just have it Cerakoted. http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=4056 |

I bought a stripped mag tac upper so no dust cover/forward assist in it. Many of the light weight BCGs don't even have the cuts in it to use a FA, but the Spikes appears to. Not sure I will add one, in fact I hope to get a Mag Tac upper with no FA features at some point. Weight estimates are based on no FA / Dust Cover parts. This is a cool part I did not know existed, will use it for some of my other builds for sure. I did ask V7 if they have plans to make a Ti Bolt release. Milspec weights 12 gram. They should also consider the FA for those that need one for their builds. |
|
I agree. I'd rather no forward assist on a lightweight build. I believe a company makes a derlin plug that acts as a delete option. If you're going with the Spikes titanium BCG, the FA will function. If you're using something like the lmos, might as well just opt for the plug. I wish mag tactical would hurry up and send out the rest of the preorders. I have two on order.
I don't think titanium would hold up well on the bolt release. I've sheared several of them off in the past in my pistol caliber builds. I've been using Seekins billet catches with good luck so far. I ordered a bag full of those aluminum grip screws today. Thanks! |

This whole thread is a classic example of why there needs to be a "Lightweight Forum"!
Most of what is discussed here has been covered NUMEROUS times! |

The plug weights about 0.08 oz and the FA it replaces weighs very close to 0.75 oz. |

I know that before I knew about the Rock River 9mm uppers I took a Colt M4 upper receiver and milled the forward assist and brass deflector off, then tig welded a piece in. Weight savings was over 2 ounces. Down side of Magnesium, I don't know whether you can weld it |

Mag Tactical Systems says 4.8 ounces for the upper receiver stripped.

That's no FA and no Dust Cover. Milspec Dustcover, Spring and Pin - 21.2 grams Milspec FA assembly and roll pin - 23.1 grams |

Good info. Thanks.
V7 told me this morning that they are releasing a .625" titanium gas block this week. Contact them if you want to get on a preorder status. They didn't offer any weight specs, but I assume it is similar to the .750. Probably looking at .75 - 1.0 ounce weight reduction where it matters most. |

I think I have to try an adjustable first to see if it will run the Delrin Buffer and Spikes Ti BCG. If it's not reliable, I will go to a standard buffer / Spikes Ti BCG and a Ti .625 Gas Block. |

Rule 1: Never add up the cost of gun parts.
It may seem stupid to spend 300 bucks to reduce the weight of a weapon by two ounces. It certainly isn't for everyone. Some people buy ten weapons and rarely shoot them all. I'd rather focus my funds on a single weapon. Makes sense on needing an adjustable gas block for your feather weight buffer. I'm curious to know how reliable your package will be. For my build, I'm not going for the absolute lightest possible assembly. My goal is to mitigate the weight gains for other quality parts such as the Raptor Charging handle. I'm hoping to build duty reliable in a lightweight package. So for areas like the buffer, I'm sticking with a heavier JP Silent Buffer. V7 also has a receiver extension that is 2 ounces lighter than my PWS 416 receiver extension. I'd rather the function of the the 416 over it. Plus, those weight differences diminish once you start adding the castle nut and receiver plate. |

I might be interested with only the magwell skeletonized. The FCG area needs to be solid. |

This is a good thread bros. You are doing god's work, god's work indeed.
I think glockslaps 308 reserve honorary, if not actual 1st place. My Armalite 12.5" w JP rifle tube and m4 stock is 8lb WO sights, light etc. Barrel is basically .750 all the way. Think I'm gonna dip the bcg in acid lol. |

Just think of all the dirt and dust and extra cleaning on your lower parts. I wish Aero hadn't wasted their time doing that and had already made slick side uppers. Oh well, their company. |

A few V7 Parts came in tonight.
V7 Castle Nut and End Plate: 11 grams, vs 34 grams for milspec V7 End Plate has a nice QD in it as well. Buffer retainer is .3 grams, vs 2.1 grams for the milspec. Tiny amount here, but neat I suppose. Waiting on my V7 Receiver Extension. If anyone has a milspec carbrine length gas tube I'd like to know the weight. |
