First build I just finished. 5lbs 13oz.
I didn't want to go too light. Upper is an Aero without forward assist.

anyway to get the ultra lightweight .308 frame setups that are here removed and put into a separate thread wading through 35 pages stinks ? i wanna build a sweet hunting rig in 6.5cm figure that will be the way i go.

looks great.

truth be told i'm actually considering paring down my collection and my ultralight is on the block.  at 4.6 pounds, the comp is *TOO* efficient and the muzzle dips on every shot heh.

it's tons of fun to shoot but i find myself running drills with the 5.6-pound rifle a lot more as it's just a little easier to keep on target.

ah well.  we'll see.  i'll probably chicken out and keep it to avoid sale regret.

I'm actually gong to throw a chunky 1-10x on it. The weight savings should balance out

Maybe start a lightweight 308 thread?

So, did some changing around on my lightweight build, which brought it up to 5lbs without the mag:

Swapped out the Brigand Arms CF stock with a normal rifle buffer tube and the Luth-AR Skullaton stock. Also swapped the RTB lightweight carrier and BCM 3x3 ambi charging handle for a JP LMOS and Fortis Clutch, respectively.

I’m not big on the new math, but I think 8 pounds, 13 ounces is WAY over six pounds. That’s Garand territory. Nice piece, but maybe not the right thread, huh.

I’ll bet without the thermal, suppressor, and ammunition it’d be pretty close.

This year has been a bad year to build a high end lightweight 223. The goal wasn’t to just build a super lightweight rifle, but to build a reliable rifle that isn’t stripped of features.

V7 2055 upper, 14.5” Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped barrel, JP Enterprises LMOS bolt carrier group,V7 magnesium hyperlite rails that titanium mounting hardware, SLR titanium gas block, V7 inconel gas tube. B. E. Meyers 249 flash suppressor,RailScales KOS G10 rail covers, Modlite OKW weapon light on a Modlite light body. Scalarworks absolute co-witness RMR mount.

The lower is still in parts, but it’s from V7 in the 2055. Receiver extension is carbon fiber. Small parts rug thru Foward Control Design and V7 parts. Geissele trigger pack.

All applicable parts are being sent out for NP3 plating soon. Plastics will be OD green and some items will be cerakoted OD green to match.

Great build.

Thats the first Master of Arms mount I’ve seen other than on their website, very nice.

I have a FF grip on one of my AR’s, my favorite grip by far.

Compared to a steel one it saves 1/3 ounce for not much money.

Compared to no end plate it weighs 0.15 ounces, but would prevent stock rotation if the castle nut came loose.

I tap my receivers for 4-40 grub screws to retain the takedown pin detent spring, and thought about leaving it off.

I finally finished my second and most likely last light weight build.
I’ve been piecing this thing together for a few years now.

My goal was to build a sub 3lb gun including a red dot, but I fell a little short. The plan was to SBR it but they lost my form 1 and I finally got fed up and cancelled it and got my $200 back.
It has an aluminum barrel extension on a 10.5 barrel to be legal.
It would have been just under 3lbs with red dot as a SBR.
The extension is pinned and welded to make it just over 16”.

I also wanted a gun that had a “factory” look and not so home built looking. Not sure if I achieved that but I’m happy with it. The only plastic part on the gun other than the carbon fiber furniture is the Taccom buffer.

Final weight w/o sight is 2 lb,15 oz.
With sight it’s 3 lb, 1.3 oz.

I love this thread.

I wish I had taken a pic, but I sold it years ago.

Plum crazy polymer upper and lower
7.5" pencil barrel
Troy TRX Extreme 7"
KAC Micro can
Lightweight BCG

Was sitting at ~4lbs. there IS such a thing as too lightweight. It felt like a toy. One of the reasons I sold it.

Right now it still has a full weight carrier, carbine buffer and chopped fsb, so there's definitely room for improvement. The 13" V0e is on the chopping block as well.

I'm looking at gas blocks now, trying to decide between an adjustable gas block or adjustable bcg. Gas blocks are available now; bcg's not so much.

I can total it up if interested.

I was at the range with a buddy of mine recently and he was asking me about the gun I had with me, and finally said…”so you’ve got about two grand in that one, right?”.
I did the math and he was right. I really didn’t want to know that. :)
I think it might be better not to total things up….especially on these projects, YMMV

Finally, my ULW build is almost done. It sits at 4 Lb 3.5 oz right now, without sights and mags. My goal was to be under 4.5 Lb without sights. So, I'm pretty happy with the result. In comparison, my SHTF rifle is about 6.5Lb with just iron sights. I could've definitely gone below 4 Lb if I wanted to chase every single gram. But right now, I really like how it looks and feels in my hands. Still undecided on the sights/optics. Probably will put on a simple red dot first to test the rifle out. If it proves reliable, then upgrade to a more sophisticated setup.
