Hey guys, looking for opinions here. This is a mock-up using a lower from another rifle. The build will be a M16a4 inspired dissy. I'm trying to make a decision for a proper nomenclature to put on the UID.
Wanting a A4 but not having any purpose for a 20" I decided to build my "alternate history" scout/recon A4 shorty or unit level, SDM-R inspired in house build. I'm basically building a platform I've thought of for sometime now. I think would have played pretty cool role during my time in service. 
The History: *fictional* 1 CAV, 2nd BCT cavalry scout squadrons during the OIF/OEF time period, inspired by 3rd ID's SDM program decided to develop a platform to better take advantage of the mk262 round opposed to their standard M4 MOD 0s. The rifle would be issued to designated spotters in light scout/recon teams who would work along side DMs that utilized the M14 EBR. 2nd BCT sourced M16A4s from support elements, shortening the barrel length to 16", and changing out the fixed stock for collapsible 6 position receiver extensions. These alterations made it more maneuverable in urban environments and while working with vehicles like Bradleys and Strikers. These modified A4s were also equipped with ACOGs, Leuopold magnified optics, and Harris bipods. So now that you know the backstory of the concept, what should I name this thing? I'm planning to order the UID but can't make up my mind. |

What UID label, and info are you guys using for the M9s? Are you using the "Glock" UD label, or the SIG MK25 UID label and putting a MFR, PNO and all that stuff on it? |

I didn’t know how much I needed these until I found this thread.
I mean, sure, I’ve seen these in pictures and on weapons I’ve handled at the SHOT Show, but I didn’t realize it was soemthing we could do on our own builds. Questions: Are these simply applied roughly to the center of the magwell, by eyeball, or are there specific measurements about where the top edge should be, etc.? For truly custom builds, is there like an official, unofficial list of part numbers, or do you just use whatever is closest to what you’re making? I realize it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but if there’s an ARFCOM standard I’ll try to follow it. If your lower isn’t from a company that has a cage code, do you just make one up, or is there an “other” code? I mean, I’ve heard that some people make their own lowers, but still put info on them in case they ever decide to sell them in the future, so there will be a make, model, and serial number. In the armed forces, is any attention paid to the fact that a lower can be attached to any upper? So, if an M4 lower wound up with a Mk18 upper, would anyone bother to update the records and issue a new UID? Is there any software that lets you use these to manage your own collection? I did 3 from CLW 1-2 years ago. Mine weren't with official cage codes or part numbers. I used them to identify my NFA lowers easily in addition to my engraving, and because it looks cool... If anyone is on the fence they are extremely durable. Wipe the receiver with acetone first. I have one I want to remove and it's not coming off without prying with a razor blade or something, but I don't want to gouge the receiver. |

| Just picked up a few of the PSA M4A1 lowers to complement CQBR Block 1 and 2 uppers. For purely aesthetic purposes, what do you all think for CLW UID's. Older rectangle UID for Block 1 and newer square UID for Block 2? |

ordered one of the PSA M4A1 lowers, I'll be adding my Colt upper, I'm not looking to make an exact clone but have ordered the UID Labels from Carolina Laser works before...
my lower will be: Cage: 7XC20 Part: 9390000 Ser: M??????? my question is, did any uppers get a UID? I can't find em now but swear I saw a few pics of UID labels on the left side of some military M4's... then again maybe I'm imagining it

For example: W000123 I’ve never seen a UID label on an upper but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. I have seen barcode labels but not UIDs. |
