My 'ban era' A2 Bushmaster rifle underwent a facelift last year when I swapped out the featureless FSB's 20" rifle barrel for a new mid-length 16":

I recently built another scoped AR with a magpul rifle stock that I really like, so I'm thinking it can serve as my rifle length version, so I'll turn the Bushy into a CAR stocked 'Commando' with an 11.5 or 12.5" barrel, like this beauty below from CptShiess, and SBR it...

Any reason I shouldn't?

Do it. One of the best AR configurations ever IMO.

I'd make it in the M16A2 style.  Get a 20" barrel from PSA.

733 knockoff is one of the handiest rifles around.

You should do it!

I did one exactly like that and IMO it is the handiest rifle for the 556 caliber. You want be disappointed.

Those are A1 uppers...does an A2 Commando going to look goofy? ...no offense CptShiess, I like it, but I have to admit the A1 looks a lot cleaner...

Technically that is an A2 with Fields Sites upper as Colt called it, referred to as a C7 upper now a days as that is what the Canadians adopted for their C7 rifle. Notice how it has the brass deflector on it.

If it were me, I would just build a new rifle, that is if you have the money to do it. I have a Colt Commando with the 11.5" barrel (Aero SBR lower). It is super handy and I can't wait to shoot it when Martial law is finally lifted. I also have 20" A1 and A4 clones. I like them for different reasons.

2 months ago I would have built a whole new rifle- but I got 'Corona'd' along with so many others- losing 40% of my pay; but the quarantine has ironically benefitted us because my daughter had to come home from school- so we're breaking even for now...

that being said, I still don't think I want add another AR to the stable (forgive me ARFCOM!)

Hmmmm....I'm thinking out-loud here, I planned on selling the barrel assembly and A2 stock to offset the build, so maybe I find an A1 upper and sell the A2 upper....then Moly Resin them to match...

ETA:  well, then I’d still have an A2 profile lower...,

I agree I just had the A2 already.  I may have to upgrade soon.  I also love the skinny profile barrel too.

If you decide to get a C7 upper, I picked mine up from Windham Weaponry.  Fit and finish is perfect on it.

While I like the a1/c7 uppers I think an a2 commando looks fine.  6933 flat tops with a carry handle look good.

A1 or A3 & Carry Handle.

IMO A2 looks goofy on just about everything but a 20" .. I had an 11.5" A2 and it was goofy enough that I swapped out the receiver for an A1 with M4 feedramps.

11.5" SBR is best SBR.  If not 11.5", I'd do a 10.3" and then a pinned 14.5" before I did a 12.5"

With or without ramps?  I just got a colt pencil barrel with ramps I’d like to cut down after the lower is SBR’d and curious how well they line up if ramped.
