Take your AR15 and do a Run and Gun event. (Page 3 of 7)

Don’t overthink it. “I will do today what others won’t. So, I can do tomorrow what others can’t.” It’s not tactics, and it’s not perfect, but it’s a reasonable representation of what you can expect to be able to do, or not do, if the time comes. The real benefit isn’t the competition, It’s the work tou put in, and the knowledge you gained, getting ready. |

To revive this thread I'm telling you guys that I'm super amped up for the Badger Trekker in WI this weekend! Got to meet up with someone local that's attending also and do some training with him last Sunday. All my gear bugs are worked out I hope and really looking forward to my first run and gun. |
|
My gun run setup. Sawmill in June so 3 liters of water mixed with liquid IV. I’ll drop that to just one liter for earlier or later gun runs when it’s cooler. One of the cooler things with the Gun Run is you’re allowed to run with a hot pistol. Attached File |

I've only done 2 run and guns so far but if anyone has done it a while and has some gear or gun setup learnings please post em up. Good to see how others have solved for same problem |

I have done several Legion matches in Kentucky and Tennessee. They keep the ranges around 300 and in. Have done them with my SWFA 1-4 LPVO and Vortex Viper gen II 1-6. They like to make targets challenging by putting camo over them or leaving the steal unpainted so harder to see against the back drops. When they had access to a cave, one mission was with a light, the other was no light other than the glow sticks on the ground. Guys who had no tritium gun sights struggled as the lights grew dim. I have shot Lead Farm matches where targets are up to 600 yds. They have lots of woods and targets can be hard to find without decent glass. I have my rifles set up as BCM ELW barrels to keep the weight down. Loctite screws as they will loosen up with the constant jarring. Bring bandaids as you will most definately get booboos long the way. If you are a decent shot, you don't always need to bring 2x the ammo. |

Originally Posted By Fooboy: Can you do an overview of your main setup / gear and what drove your choices? The most important thing I can add to the gear discussion is this: Everything you add to your kit needs to earn its weight, and its place on your gear list--make sure the thing you are bringing is worth the weight. Would a nice tripod make distant rifle shots easier? Sure. But you have to carry it for 7 miles. Is it worth it for the maybe one time you'll use it in a match? Rifle: HK MR556A4 either 16" or 11." I'll use the 11" for most matches east of the Mississippi if the shots are 350ish and in, and I'll switch to the 16" for Texas matches where you may see targets out to 650. The MR556 is remarkably accurate, absolutely reliable and the A4 is much lighter than previous models. Glass: On the 16" I use a Primary Arms 2-10 with BDC reticle, and I absolutely love it. I'm sad they stopped making it and completely dropped the ball with their new line-up. I know some guys can get away with running very little magnification for distant targets, but I am not one of those guys--I like the capability that the 2-10 provides--even if I don't use all the magnification. I also have an off-set RMR for any up close targets, but it's rare to see any close paper targets at a run and gun match, so it doesn't get used much. On the 11" I run a Primary Arms 1-8 with the same BDC reticle. Keep in mind that most R&G matches use exclusively steel targets for everything (to minimize reset between shooters)--so the vast majority of all rifle targets will be no closer than about 75 yards (so the steel doesn't get destroyed)--keep that in mind when you are selecting optics. Don't over-think the rifle and glass, and don't let current limitations prevent you from shooting a match. Any decent, reliable 16" AR will work--throw a 1-6, 1-8 or whatever you have laying around and go shoot a match. I had my ass beat by a guy with a PSA build and 3-9 hunting scope. Sling: I've tried a bunch--VTac, BFG etc, but have settled on the MagPul MS-1 padded sling. I like the adjustability method, and there's no excess tabs or sling ends hanging off. After adjusting the way I want it to fit with my gear on, I cut off any excess strap material and sew the ends to the sling strap to prevent unraveling. I also use a Blue Force Gear wire loop in lieu of QDs. Both the sewing of straps and the use of a wire loop for the sling were hard-learned lessons after multiple sling unravelings and QD failures during matches. Pistol: HK VP9L with an AimPoint Acro P2. Fantastic pistol, and I prefer an enclosed-emitter dot for R&G, as you nearly always get wet and dirty. An enclosed emitter RDS is easier to keep clean in a match. I typically run the HK 20 round mags, but I do have a 26 round mag I'll bring if I know the match will have a big pistol-heavy stage. Chest-rig: I'll switch between a few different ones based on the match. If it's a shorter match with fewer stages, I run a Hill People Gear chest bag that has inserts to fit two rifle mags and two pistol mags. If the match has more stages, I use a knock-off of a (I think) Haley chest bag and flat pack that holds two pistol mags and three rifle mags, along with an admin pouch. Admin pouch: I'll keep a gel pack or two, depending on the length of the match, as well as some salt capsules, lens cleaner wipes, a spare set of foam ear plugs (in case I lose one) and a small square of cotton rag (old T-shirt). Cotton works better to clean an optic/shooting glasses lens than synthetic material. Bipod: I bring a bipod with for every match--but I keep it light. I use the Spartan Precision Javelin, which has carbon fiber legs and a magnetic socket for attach/detach. Lightweight and easy to throw on during the stage brief, if I think I'll need it. Pack: I use a knock-off Haley flat pack if I need storage (long match where I'll need extra mags in the pack) and a Tasmanian Tiger flat pack if all I really need is hydration. I usually run 2 liters of water, as I'm a really heavy sweater. Belt: I use an Esstac belt and pouches. Huge fan--they make great stuff, and everything has held up very well. Can't recommend their products enough. I will reconfigure the pouches based on how much ammo I need to bring. A very easy plan is to bring 1 pistol and 1 rifle mag for each stage. You'll end up with more ammo than you likely need, but you won't have to worry about topping off magazines on the go. That being said, I use T-Mags so that if I have to top off mags, at a glance I can quickly see which mags have fewer rounds to strip. My pistol holster is a KT-Mech with retention--I'd never do one of these matches without some form of active retention on a hard-sided, kydex holster. Shirt: Something light/breathable/technical, but with a collar--as it helps avoid having the the sling grinding on your neck throughout the run. Pants: Don't laugh, but I found these cheap tactical pants from the 'Tactical World (China) Store' billed as breathable, fast-drying combat pants. They are ridiculously thin and lightweight--they literally feel like paper. They dry out fast, are surprisingly durable and were really cheap. After a year of matches with one pair, I bought a few more pairs to put away for later. Shoes: I prefer the Hoka SpeedGoat, but any good trail shoe should work. I prefer not using shoes with Gore-Tex, as you will almost always submerge your feet completely in water, which renders the waterproofedness useless, and they tend to be hotter and not breath as well as non Gore-Tex shoes. I use the 'toe-socks' as I have found it helps prevent blisters. Knee/elbow pads: I'm a little baby when it comes to my knees and elbows. I use the spandex basketball shorts that have built-in knee pads and relatively thin volleyball elbow pads--just something to prevent getting scratched or poked when going prone on gravel or low-crawling under something. I tried the 'tactical' style elastic kneepads (think early GWOT issue) and found them to be useless for this style of game. Ear pro: I tried all forms of electronic ear-pro, but hated the extra weight (and didn't like to submerge them), so I just settled on foam ear plugs. The drawback here is that I frequently have to say 'Huh?' when the RO is reading the stage description. Glasses/eye-pro: I wear prescription glasses, and initially just ran with my glasses on (as I needed them to keep from tripping and falling). I found out pretty quick that that sucks--as I spent more time cleaning the sweat off of them than anything else. I have settled on wearing contacts and clear shooting glasses so that I can run without getting my glasses (kept on my hat) all sweaty, but I can still see where I'm going, and I don't miss the intel and cache items that some matches throw in. I'll try and get some pictures of all of the gear I discussed above, and add anything else I can think of. Cheers! ETA: Don't let your current gear or fitness limitations prevent you from shooting a match. Competitive shooters are the nicest, most generous people I've ever met. If you showed up at a match with nothing and said 'I'd really like to play,' in 5 minutes you'd have the necessary gear. Folks are happy to loan equipment and help you get started. Also, a lot of folks have the idea that they aren't good enough, or aren't in shape enough to shoot a match. If you wait until you are 'good enough,' you'll never make it out there. Like Nike says, just do it. |

So I have Hunters Moon 10k coming up in a few weeks. Kinda torn on what to bring. Just found out they have 3" Keen Eye Targets on each stage for bonus points and debating bringing my 14.5" lightweight BCM with 1-6 Razor or my 16" Green Mountian medium barrel with Viper 2-10. Shots will be out to 600ish yds and 3" targets out to 150 yds. The 16" is a little bit of a weight increase and round count will be 120+ rifle and same for pistol. So I will be hauling some ammo. Planning on 1.5x ammo needed roughly. I am a good shot and don't plan on slinging ammo till the par runs out. Have been doing lots of leg cardio and rucking. I think I can get it done with the lighter shorter rig just trying to not gas myself out and slow down too much. Well I plugged in the 3" target at the 150 yds in my Strelok and with the Razor, the targrt is pretty obscurred by the reticle. Looks like I will be using the PST 2-10 instead. Gonna be fun lugging the weight through the Ozark Hills. |

If anyone here is in the north Florida, south Georgia/Alabama area and wants to shoot a run and gun match, I just sent out the match announcement for a 5k run and gun match at my home range, Talon Range in Tallahassee, FL December 7th. Just a hair over 5k run, 5 stages, physical challenges and rifle targets out to 400 yards. I'm going to have a rimfire division at this match as well (we had a few dads last year that wanted to run the match with a kiddo, but we weren't set up for rimfire--this year we are!) Just go on a fast and lose 5lbs by match day |
| Settled on my SWFA 3-9 HD on the 16". Keeping things simple as it is the lightest of my MPVOs, PST Gen 2 2-10 and Bushnell 3-12 LRTS. Going to be 12 stages 120+ rifle and 120+ pistol rounds. Looking like 80* and dry this weekend so shouldn't be too miserable on weather. Way better than the summer humidity. With that many stages there will be some wait times so the rests are welcome with all this extra weight. Never carried this much ammo for this long of distance. Going to be a fun one. |

Its been 10 yrs since I did a R&G.. We were playing around with this mid to late 90s, ran my first one with a Bushmaster HBAR. I started building a 16" super light after that... I've posted photos here. 16" SL barrel, A2 upper, CAR stock, and a Trijicon reflex on a gooseneck mount.. Used a Blackhawk 3 pt sling, they aren't available any more. We ran fairly short range targets, 200 yards was the longest range available so we used half size targets. One lesson I learned was to carry water, use a Camelback b/c trying to drink from a bottle or canteen is near impossible when running. I used an assault vest as it moved around a lot less than a harness. Hope y'all enjoyed this trip down memory lane! |
Another old guy
| Shots will be out to 600 yds and maybe more. Some small 3" bonus targets for each stage. Going to be plain steel with not a lot of obvious painted targets. More of hunting type situations so not many multi engagement targets. First time doing this one so should be fun. Have done several where targets were out to 300 and my LPVOs did fine on those. Even the longer range tactical style ones were fine with the LPVO since the targets were torso style and larger. |

An extra pound for an hour should not be a determining factor. |

It is qd'd to the stock and then attached with dome 550 to the handguard via a magpul loop just so it doesn't annoying rattle while I'm running. I carry a small pouch of "just in case stuff". In it is some 550 cord to deal with a QD/sling, shoelace, gear, or some other failure while running. I also carry a spare 2032 batt, aimpoint wrench (My acro was loose when I was putting my gear on for the last one, first time that has ever happened), a collapsible cleaning rod and a couple of patches/CLR in case I muzzle punch the mud, and a second set of ear pro. |

I'm not sure about the specifics of his SOF background, he references open land warfare here, but I could see it being a catastrophic issue for VBSS, etc. ![]() New Noveske Disruptive Deep flute Barrel 6 ARC (DDF) |

I'm very curious about who made the QDs (i.e. BCM vs Alibaba value pack) and the circumstances under which they failed. My pleasure on the report. As far as ditching the QDs--seems that most folks don't have an issue, but I have had two QDs (MagPuls) fail during a match that resulted in my rifle smacking the ground. Both rifles/QDs were dirty, but not muddy--and they hadn't been actuated at any time during the match. On the rifle-side, one was with a Midwest Industries rail, and the other was on a KAC rail, so decent kit all the way around. It's possible that somehow the buttons got pushed while the rifle was bouncing around on my back, or the little ball bearings in the QD failed, or the socket in the rail failed--but whatever the reason, the result was the same--a dropped rifle. Switching to the BFG wire loops and 550 cord for sling loops has completely fixed that issue. I have never needed to use the QD to ditch the sling in a hurry, so I'm not really losing any capability by ditching them. I'm jealous for those headed to Waco this weekend--I had to withdraw due to work. |

R&G matches are the most enjoyable form of competitive shooting I've ever been involved in. Go to the RNG discussion board in Facebook. There's a Discord channel for R&G as well that does a better job of letting you know the where and when of matches. OED (Old Eighteen Defense) runs a bunch of R&G matches in TX, so visit their site. Waco Tactical Fitness is another great match, and their October match registration opens on the 24th. For the good matches, know that they tend to sell out very quickly--matches like Legion will sell out in 30 or 40 SECONDS once they go live on PractiScore, so you have to be on your game just to get in to the match! I will echo what the OP stated--it's a great way to test your gear and yourself. If it's your first time I strongly recommend doubling the expected ammo or even tripling though there's a weight penalty carrying that much. I've slacked off over the last year but I'm planning on trying to hit a few next year. I'm Warhorse category with OED now! Advantage old guy. |

Bit not much in the middle Is my 8 or 10 top end going to be a limiting factor? I have a 13.9inch 6mm ARC build in progress now, I'm considering running this later this year, or is everyone shooting 5.56? Is everyone running 16in barrels? Longer? I know it's all about weight and balance, I don't want to be hamstrung with a short barrel to save a few ounces To much magnification can slow you down looking for targets though the point about enough magnification to find targets with the paint shot off is real. I DNF'd a stage because I could not find the gray target next to the gray barked trees. |

I had just gotten a PA-10 and figured "hey, a short course! I'll do it with the big gun and see how it is." About halfway through I regretted it. Rifle ran fine and I swear it was easier to make my hits with but it's a lot heavier. It was a great way to test the gun in the wild and the gear changes with bigger magazines. That and drain holes in boots have been my biggest takeaways. And locking turrets. |

Indeed, it is amazing how very camouflaged a steel target can become, once shot up and grey, even against a neutral background that's a different color. And I'm always reminded of various animals that're colored that same way, and disappear into their backgrounds, until you see them move. |

All sling ends are sewn to make sure they don't unravel. https://i.vgy.me/LOP58e.jpg For those who want/need to maintain the ability to doff the sling quickly, than this isn't the way to go, but it works for me. Nice setup. Arisaka Defense makes an mlok U-loop sling mount.. It’s a great design. |
