very sorry for a silly question, but i did a quick search and nothing came up - is there any quick way to find out some info on a U.S. PROPERTY MARKED COLT AR-15 from the serial number ?

thanks

What info are you trying find?

ETA
Dating serial numbers

Depends on what info you need, as mentioned. There are plenty of threads that can give you general info. As far as “where did this rifle go/come from” there are very few rifles that have that kind of paper trail. A FOIA request can yield some previous owners, etc. and there are some rifles that just happen to have documentation. Sounds like this one doesnt.

Approx date of Manufacturer.  I already checked the link in the site - my serial does not appear within the range as far as I can see ?

Apparently there is now one known example.  I guess there is apparently no way to attach an image (other than a link) on this forum.

What makes you say that? Nothing immediately jumps out at me.

He is saying that is odd because it does not match any other known example.

PROPERTY is spread out to generally align with the next line OF US GOVT.

SERIAL is only been seen on the XM, 602 and earlier models, not on the M16A1

There is a space at the end of SERIAL and the first digit of the SN

Not true the early A1’s had SERIAL before the actual number

That being said the way these roll marks are done is raising red flags for me they look like they were done by hand each letter/number separately and the “COLT AR-15” almost looks like an engraving

When we were in Afghanistan, a member or three of our crew lost their assigned property in a crazy, drunken poker game.
Our interpreter knew a guy that trained in Pakistan as a "gunsmyth" extraordinaire. He could make a Damascus steel double barrel shotgun from old soup cans.
There is legend that he hand made a few M16A1 clones that were close enough to GTG that the armorer took them back as damaged and exchanged them out to us. Might be one of these types of legends.

Total fiction.
Never happened.
Couldn't happen.
No one is skilled like that.
Stuff like that doesn't exist.
Pure fantasy.
YMMV

It's 100% a reweld...... or something even sketchier

notice anything odd about the (lack of) markings in this pic?

Besides being a reweld the Pony looks definitely odd.. the other marking looks legit and similar to this rubber duckie with SN in the 800k range

Aside from missing all the Colt mfg. markings and Hartford address rear of the magwell .....at best it's a reweld with a Colt front and Hydramatic rear

Would love to see a FOIA request on this one .....

The more I look at it, seems like a "clone" made from a 1980s SGW lower. Lots of those were used for conversions prior to 1986.

Seems rather unlikely it is anything other than a Colt AR-15 - I know when I fill out my Form 4s or my form 5320 if I ever mix up the serial by one digit or indicate a different barrel length or make any kind of error,  I immediately get a call from the ATF that something is not matching up correctly.  My question is not if it's a legit Colt AR-15 but if there is anyway of tracing the date of manufacturer from the serial.

There is about a 0% chance the receiver, as shown, or the serial number applied to it, was done by Colt ....maybe parts of it.....way too many red flags here.......that's why you're not going to be able to date it by SN.

FOIA it, and see when it was F2'd / added to the NFRTR

Might also want to pull the pistol grip and look for some "hidden" markings ..... I'm thinking Norrell or Erb

Notice any differences?
eta: The more I look at it, the more I think it isn't even a Colt front half welded to a GM rear ........ the casting is wrong, as well as all of the markings

This rifle was not manufactured by Colt and i can provide 100-1000 or more picture examples as to why that is the case. That receiver is assed up. And as such, the only info you will get regarding this serial would be via a FOIA request, because the serial is made up.

No disrespect… Pretty arrogant to come onto the forum where people live and breathe this stuff, ask a question and when provided an answer, proceed to disagree with it based on personal opinion.

Many, many picture examples of rifles I have personally held that ARE original Colts found in the photo albums linked here and here.
