So I have a barrel chunk left over from a barrel job I did a few years back. It's a 1.2 straight barrel, 1-10 twist and max finish length is 12". Would like to do something besides a 300 blackout.

The 7.62x40wt looks interesting but I don't see much info on it or is there something else out there that would optimize the barrel I have. I would like to stick to something I can at least buy ready to load brass for.

Do a 308. I have a 12.5 inch 308 AR. Serious close quarters fire power. Still can stretch out a ways. Plenty of 308 on store shelves. Do a pistol, use the 200 bucks for a good red dot or scope.

7.62x39 is my personal favorite. 7.62x39 fires fine in a .308 barrel. With barrels being as cheap as they are right now I don't see much purpose in building your own, other than getting the length you want and the right gas port size.

300BLK is the first thing that comes to mind when I think SBR 30 caliber in the AR15 platform.

Did a little more looking last night and came across a 7.62x25 tokarev upper. Anyone have any experience with that caliber in a ar15 upper?

Try the AR Variants subforum. Lots of interesting calibers in there.

Sounds like murder on ear drums in close quarters. I guess it wouldnt be much different than any other unsupressed rifle indoors though.

Would love to have one with a short can. What are wait times on nfa stuff now days?

That would be interesting.  Might even work on a 9mm lower.

Those were quite popular years back when surplus ammo was dirt cheap (as in 22lr cheap ~6 cents a round) since the ammo faded away as did the builds. Ron Williams and Marty built uppers and also did the sub/super application with them. being 1-10 you would be limited for subsonic applications.

Brass can be formed from .223 but is a lot of work.

Some other options are the new 300 Hamr (just an improved 7.62x40 in my opinion) 30 Grendel(think it's just a straight neckup), 30 HRT(6.8spc based, SBR may offer cases/ammo for this still) 30 carbine(would require bushing the bolt likely) the 30 luger on a 9mm lower could be fun. I'm sure there are plenty more but just the ones I know off the top of my head.

30AR. Go big or go home. There is the new 300HAMR also. But the 7.62x40 is probably the most practical.

30RAR requires a bigger bcg, extension and receiver that are all not available anymore. or at least to my knowledge.

The 30 luger does look interesting. I wonder if that would feed out of a glock mag?

I would think so. 9mm was derived from the 30 luger. Same case diameter (which means you'd have to open up the bolt face some or go blowback) tapers look very similar. should feed slick as snot being a bottle necked cartridge. Starline shows brass in stock for it, dies are available....DO IT!

If you did a DI build and upped the pressures into the 45K+ realm I bet it would deliver some decent performance. Resized .312 bullets like the 85gr or 100gr xtp should perform pretty well. Would be like a semi auto 32 H&R mag.
