Any recommendations on a decent set that won't bend on the first hit? Thoughts on this set?https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012TKY0VI

Can’t say.
But the last time this got asked I bookmarked the thread and remember that Rose received high marks from a lot of arf.com. The Wheeler punches I bought for lower builds are trash. I spend more time tapping them back straight than I do driving pins with them. |

I’ve tried at least 5 other roll pin sets and this is the only one that met my expectations.

The smallest of it broke and the second smallest bent. Heck, the $7 1/16" punch from Lowe's bent. The Tekton 1/16" is the most solid 1/16" punch I've used so far. |

I have that set, I bent the 1/8" punch abusing it, sent them a pic of the bent punch and they had a new one on the way to me that same day.
Ive been happy with it, if you order on their site you get rewards points to use on any other stuff you buy from them. https://www.tekton.com/punch-set-with-walnut-block-66564 |

Mayhew or Starrett.
Cheap sets will just cause you headaches. Buying them individually in sizes needed is sometimes more cost effective. |

I have a set of these from brownells. Grace USA for $35. I have built many AR’s with them. Never bent one.

That Amazon kit doesn't have a 5/64 for gas tube and contains a lot of punches you don't need for an AR. Brownell's have lifetime guarantee also. |

Brownell's it is, thanks.

The set I use the most. They are solid and never failed me. Often I use a starter set to get them started too

I prefer Grace punches

Made in the US (by Wilde, if I remember correctly) and sold under the Tekton name. The only bad thing is the set doesn't include hollow roll pin starter punches. |

The deuce you say.

I use Grace punches. I've had cheaper and they definitely didn't hold up. I've used more expensive punches and didn't find them any better than Grace. No sense paying more for no return on investment.

What we use in Armorer courses mostly are from Proto. Some of our Proto roll pin punches have thousands of Armorers and Gunsmiths beating on them annually, and we have had lots of these punches in service for years, so they hold up very well. The Lyman roll pin punches are of decent quality as well.

I don't have this particular set, but I recommend Mayhew punches; if you don't need the large diameter punches get the 9 punch set and save the money.

I have the Tekton set and it works good for the money. You can't beat on small punches and expect them to hold up.
That said, I've switched out a lot of my roll pins to stainless steel coil pins. There's a guy on eBay that sells them sized specifically for an AR. They go in so much easier, stay put, and whatever grade of stainless they are doesn't seem to rust as easily as a phosphate finished steel roll pin that gets dinged by a punch. |

View Quote I also use the coiled stainless for the Forward Assist and the Trigger guard, as the larger coiled pins go in easier and are under little stress. However the smaller pins like the ejector roll pin which takes a pounding, the smaller mil spec slotted pins go in just as easy as the stainless coiled and are 25% stronger than the stainless coiled. Me personally Im not interested in putting in a 25% weaker pin for the bolt ejector and the gas tube. Personal preference for me when the stainless coiled has no other advantage. |

View Quote I wouldn't buy that set, 9 punches of which only 4 are needed for AR-15 work, you can buy the same 4 Mayhew from McMaster Carr for less than half the price, throwing away a lot of money buying that set for AR-15 work. |

Got a set of Bondhus made in USA and they're a major upgrade that get used all the time. Eta missed the roll pin part. Uhm, no recommendation since I made my own from brass on the lathe, but if you need regular punches see above |
