I am putting together an AR-15 pistol upper receiver using an Aero Precision M4E1 upper and a 12.5 inch Green Mountain chromed lined 1X7 pencil barrel. The barrel will have an A1 flash hider. What length
free float handguard would be best? Any recommendations on manufacturers would be appreciated.

I'd go with a forward controls design RHF, 10.5 would be pretty slick.

subtracting 3" from barrel length is a good rule of thumb for handguard length. There are charts online comparing available barrel length with measurements etc.

This is subjective but I find that regardless of barrel length, that my natural forward hand position pretty much works out to a 10" hand guard, so to save weight, I just stick with hand guards that length.

Perhaps there is good reason to cover the whole barrel (maybe iron sights and going for maximum line of sight???), I just want to save weight so go with the minimum that is comfortable.

I would suggest 9.5”-11.5”. It comes down to personal preference.

Here is a 12.3” barrel with a 11.5” FCD Rail.

One that covers the gas block, but not the muzzle device.

With shorter barrels, I prefer having a handguard that gets closer to the end of the barrel. Went with an 11.5" FCD RHF on my 12.5"
