I shoot USPSA/IDPA, I have an SBR'd complete lower that's unused. I SHOULD use it to build an AR9 shorty as that would be pretty cool to use in competition, BUT I'm so worn out on the AR platform I don't have a heart to complete it. Quite frankly I'm more of an old school retro or even WW2 fan when it come to weapons and what I see out there for 9mm uppers, with free float rails, swanky stock and no FSB, just doesn't get my jollies going. I mean hell, does anyone even MAKE a "Colt SMG" style upper with an FSB anymore?
Do any of you have pics of some more unorthodox AR9s that are out there, something I could use as inspiration? It doesn't have to be practical for anything really, just something that breaks the current mold you see all over instagram. Thanks! |

I had this idea to get a FM 9mm upper with the forward charging handle and put some hk style sights from RTG on it and make a faux-mp5 kinda thing. Thought it would change the gun up enough to make it less AR-like.

I don't know if mine qualifies as "unorthodox" but I tend to think it is. http://www.fototime.com/EA663F1D8719BD8/standard.jpg View Quote This is probably a very stupid question but how hard is it to build a 9mm upper? There's no gas system to worry about, I imagine that's probably the most difficult part of an upper build, that and I suppose any headspacing issues. Unfortunately a lot of the pics from the picture thread on here have gone missing from the first half, and that's arguably the half I'm interested in (again, more retro stuff than new). From what I could find, here are some of the ones I dig. Anyone knows who made the upper in the above pic? After finding that last pic I went out and bought an RRA Entry stock. Those I really dig! |

The upper with short barrel and flip front sight (second from bottom) is a DOE upper. The original Colt DOE (department Of energy) uppers are hard to find and most here have had to source out individual parts and build themselves. Search the forums for DOE uppers.

......but PSA’s deal a few years back on 32 round metal form mags was too good to pass up at under $10 a mag with free shipping. View Quote I have box full of the old style C Products 32s. They're OK and work fine but I never liked the finish or tube wall thickness (had to modify your upper). Finally bought an ASC mag last week with orange follower and I REALLY LIKE it. Its on par with metalform if not better IMHO. |

Thanks for all the pics guys! I'm taking a little bit from each of you for ideas.
I had a decision to make, Colt or Glock, and despite harping on "retro" I ended up going with a Stern mag block. While I'm making this as a toy primarily, I do want to shoot this in comp from time to time, and I already have a mountain of mags for my glocks. Don't really care for the look of the glock mags in an AR, I guess I can always swap it later. |
