Hi folks,

Noob to ARs.  Will take it to the range and out with friends on land on which we can shoot.  For now, it'll be a toy.  Just want to be honest.

I've handled a few "commercial" brands at various price points.  Diamondback, S&W, Ruger, even DD.

I like the two in the subject line.  Both seem like quality guns.  The Victor I handled has B systems hardware.

The Coil is $250 more than the Victor.  The Victor is <$1K.

The Coil trigger definitely is lighter and the red dot is great.

The Victor has the price advantage and comes with BUIS.  It's flat trigger feels pretty nice, just not Coil nice.

The Victor also has the muzzle break which (supposedly) makes the bang alot louder.  Is that muzzle break a negative over the Sig's flash hider?

I want to buy something I've handled as just handling has ruled some guns out.  So that leaves out the likes of PSA.

I would appreciate opinions/comments on what direction you would go between the two.  I like either gun is ready to shoot, either with red dot or BUIS.

Thanks!

Really looking for some opinions on the two.

Of the two, I’d pick the Springfield. I just don’t like stainless barrels myself. More prone to wear and more prone to accuracy loss at the same temperature of a carbon steel barrel. The rail on the Sig looks like total crap too.

Looking at the two guns, does it look like there really would be no way to add BUIS to the Tread Coil since the handguard doesn't extend to the length of the barrel?

Or if you did the the sight line would be shorter than optimal?

I've handled both guns but looking above this just occurred to me.  Like the Coil since it has the red dot isn't really designed to have BUIS?

I've read it never hurts to have BUIS and some say you should learn to shoot both.  The Victor has them of course and one could easily add a red dot to it.

I would consider more of a workhorse type rifle like the Colt 6960 CCU myself.
It has Midlength gas, a Pencil bbl, and a Centurion rail:

The SIG looks cool.

But, which one will you be able to get parts for in a few years?

I have two or three SIGs that I really liked.  However, if the wrong part breaks the rest becomes, "Just a parts gun."  It is a gun if it no longer works?

I went back to a plain AR15 that I can buy any part from just about anywhere that sells AR parts.

I have the Victor and like it, dont have to much comparison with other ARs to make a big point for it. Just came to post 2 things :

- The muzzle brake (as every brake on an AR) is unnecessary and annoying but can be replaced for virtually nothing. I gonna get that done soon.
- The Sig has no option for BUIS on the Front, that would be a no go for me.
- Sig has afaik not factory QD Sling Points, the Victor comes with them (Stock / End Plate) . Not a deal breaker but since most my slings are QD and i sometimes switch them from rifles to rifles that one is important to me.

i appreciate the comments.  What gives me pause on the Victor are what seem to be some quality issues reported around the internet, beyond the one YT guy who reviewed a used gun.
Also, there is more than one report of Springfield not providing the upgraded BCG due to supply issues.  When I asked CS about it, they were coy and simply said they had different suppliers so the BCG would look different.
You would think there would be a standard for their enhanced BCG.
Since it's a once you bought it you bought it proposition, it's a tough call.
Sig does sell a BUIS set for their rail but I think they're like $150.
I could drop to the base Tread and upgrade later but getting the upgrades with the coil model ultimately saves some $.
The Springfield is definitely priced better and has a very nice feature set.

At your price range I’d get a Colt OEM2. They can be had for $750-$800. Then get a CMT rail and whatever furniture you like.

That’s a nice idea.  But for my first AR, I’m looking for something ready out of the box.  Down the line I might be more inclined to take this kind of approach.

Take the Victor, nothing wrong with it (except the brake in my opinion but ymmv).
Do all the building and upgrading on your second rifle.

If the BCG is important to you check which one is in the rifle your Store has on hand.

Spend a little more and just get a Colt EPR 16". That will serve you well.

If you're dead set on these two, I'd go with the sig. Keep in mind that everything can be changed out pretty easily. Don't just start throwing parts at it, but after you've put a couple of cases through it you'll start to see what you like and what you don't. If the brake is obnoxious you can pick up an A2 flash hider for a couple of bucks and swap it out. I'm guessing the BCG thing is that it has a semi auto. That's not a problem, but if you decide you just "need" a FA one... 30 seconds to drop one in there and save the original one for a spare. If you get something that uses standard parts you can literally replace every piece on it yourself and in your living room (if you happen to have a vice in there)

Colt EPR for that money. May be a carbine gas barrel but it'll be a perfectly gassed carbine barrel that's better than an overgassed middy.

Guys – thanks for the comments.  I went in a different direction.  A LGS had a nice package that included everything I needed to get started.  This is an UnbrandedAR complete lower and complete upper sold assembled by the LGS.  The LGS installed/included the Romeo, 2 Magpul mags, Bulldog case, Avid Multi Cleaning kit, glasses, basic ear protection etc.  It was extremely reasonable.

It’s a basic rifle with some nice upgrades as I saw it.  The stock is extremely comfortable, the same or more so than any of the brand name rifles I tried.  I also really liked the MFT V2 pistol grip.  The barrel is 223 Wylde Nitrided 1:8.  The 15” handguard is very smooth with quality machining and easy to grip.  It’s a mid-length gas system.  This rifle has an ambi bolt catch release.  It sits right in front of the ejection port cover.  It’s a polished mil-spec trigger with a nice feel.

Where did they cut corners?  4140 Barrel steel.  MIM Extractor.  The gas block is not pinned.  I did some research.  Being new, I doubt I’ll notice.  If I get into it and like shooting it, I can upgrade or invest in something nicer and then my kids(s) have a rifle to have/shoot also.

I’m taking a class this weekend and will get ~250 rounds through it.  I can’t wait.
