I'm interested in putting back USGIs and perhaps some Lancers. No more magpul.

What do i need to look for?

I ripped this from the tacked thread.  Colt has always been good for me.  UR welcome.

G.I. contract 30 round. Black of green plastic followers. These are the most
common M16 magazines on the surplus market. (Countless millions made.) Circa
1975 to 1994. Marked with contractor's name and usually location (city) on
floorplate. Anodized finish. Contractors included: Adventureline, Parsons
Precision Products, Labelle Industries, Sanchez (DSI), Center Industries,
Okay Industries, Cooper Industries, FN, and a few others. Starting around 1992,
some of the contractors began using soft green plastic followers. (Not to be
confused with the shiny hard green plastic followers used on the earliest
Colt-made 30 rounders.) Military contract 30s are fairly easy to find at gun
shows. Usually $18 to $25, depending on maker and condition.

So in summary, here are the good ones:
Adventureline
Bushmaster (BFI)
Center Industries
Colt
DPMS
FN
HK
Okay Industries
Parsons
Simmonds (Universal)
Sterling

And here are the *potentially* bad ones:
Cooper Industries
DSI (Sanchez)
And of course anything aftermarket (Usually made of blued steel––these are JUNK!)

Unless you feel like making your life unnecessarily complicated, just order the the D&H magazines from PSA shown above and be done with it.

I have a 40mm ammo can stuffed full of them, as in I can barely get the lid closed.

I have to STRONGLY disagree that HK is a “good” one!

They are notorious for improper heat treating on the feed lips and weak springs that fail.

Also, Bushmaster and DPMS never manufactured magazines. They are simply rebranded magazines manufactured by other companies.

Talk to the mod, that is from the tacked thread.

I have had good luck with most all surp mags.  When they quit working they get tossed.  I’m not rebuilding a beater mag.

I practice with them and have noticed that after awhile, a few years worth of shooting, I can insert a mag PAST the little plastic shelf that is designed to stop the mag at the appropriate "depth" in the magwell.

Basically I wear out the "stop" and then have a jammed mag in the well.

They're cheap so I throw them away at that point

Had this happen to me in a carbine class. Magpul G2 mags  Reload under an open bolt, slap mag in, release bolt, never felt it close. Looked down and the mag was way up in the works. Jambed up good. Have never been able to reproduce this with a GI or Lancer mag.
