Hey all, just bought this in the EE. Anyone ever seen one like this still in the wrap? Anyone ever opened one? I am beyond curious...

Now that's cool. Guessing you're not going to open it?   1969 & XM16E1 according to package date & Mr Snafu.  I don't know if re-pack or not.  Possibly re-pack as it is a replacement part, it sure isn't stamped re-pack.  Wondering if square or round forge?  Still kinda early for M-16A1 03/69.  Everything I've had that late was round forge going off barrels installed on them and everything matched color wise and proofed, no dings at gas tube.  Quack! Quack! Duck!  Think you could feel it if square forge?  Might try with eyes closed on a couple with paper over them or such on the pieces you have out the package, then feel that package. Please don't mess it up on my accord.

Only NOS sealed receivers  I've had were much later in clear,  light blue, or yellowish plastic with different colors of ink yellow or black I believe.  I opened all mine and threw packages away.   Thinkng A-2 is earliest I've ever had.  Thank you very much for sharing. Love to see what's inside.  I always opened that stuff just to make sure someone didn't pull a fast one.  Seen a more than a few modern parts in early dated sealed packages in last few years.

Mike, kinda missed the box thing distracted by the cool factor and what was behind door #1.    Probably could mic box OD at FA area and determine if it has a FA on it or not as mentioned by another poster.

Thanks for the insight guys. As far as feeling through the package, almost looks like a box inside the wrap, so don’t think that’ll work.

I may look around and see if X-ray is an option, would be really cool to get a glimpse without having to open it. As deep as my curiosity is, I don’t think I could.

Thanks again for looking/sharing thoughts. I just bought it today so won’t have it in my hands for a week or two, will update when it arrives.

I have one of these and used it for a build.  A1, forward assist, round forge, no forge mark on handle below rear sight or proof marks.  Craft paper outer wrapper, cardboard box inside.  Treated foil wrapper around the upper.  Upper had all sorts of white residue from the treated foil wrapper on it; easily wiped off with no residual staining.

Wow very cool. Did it have any parts installed or was it totally stripped? Were the lugs black or gray? Front lug counter bored?

Do you have any pics you could share?

Both lugs are prominently black; front lug is rebated.  Rear sight “I”, arrow and “R” are raised.  Pretty standard looking light/early gray A1 upper.

Of course it’s up to you, but I’d open it.

Can’t take it with you, so if you don’t, the next guy will.

Open it, let it serve it's purpose. Build it into a rifle as it was intended.

There are literally 1000’s of upper receivers out there that can be/(need to be) built into rifles, but not many in original packaging.  I would never open it.  It is a piece of history.  Besides, right now it is a “Schrodinger’s” upper - without opening it, it is a repackaged black tar painted junk upper, and an original finish mint 602 upper at the same time.

Really glad the upper is going to someone else who won't open it. Like someone else said, there are a million uppers out there but not very many in original packaging. I'm definitely curious about the X-ray thing.

It’s here

My resolve is strong, it’ll remain sealed. Maybe I’ll get around to the X-ray adventure down the road, but for now it’ll occupy the corner of my safe.

Thanks Blanco, super happy with it.

Just open the damn thing.
