Here's a couple pics of my retro I've been working on for a few years.  The lower is an 80 that I've machined quite a bit.  The upper is Nodak-Brownell's.  The barrel is a 1-12 proto from Brownells with (I think) a Braceman FSB.

Faux bakelite furniture, parkerized 25rd mag.  Bipod lug I fashioned myself.

The finish is Duracoat "Durapark" dark gray.

Nice!  Who did the faux Bakelite?  I have a couple that are in need of it.

I did it using carmel brown Krylon then minwax stain (walnut) and dabbed it in with a stiff brush.  After drying for a few days...which it never seems to, I overcoated it with Krylon matte clear which somehow cures the finish

Shoots great....that is....after my first outing when I realized I had installed a carbine buffer spring.   Once that was rectified it ran 100% for about 150 rds.  Next week I'll get it out for a proper zero with some decent ammo

Thanks for all the positive comments

That is super!  These threads are nice.  But reminds me how hard it is to source replica Proto stuff now

I wish I could find an A1 upper receiver. When they are in stock they are crazy money, even replica's.

The gas blocks are even harder to find now - the Brownells ones were decent - Wished I had stocked up.

I used Dogfight Ink stencils.....12 car battery charger and saltwater

The tricky part was getting the fire control stencils down into the grooves I milled in to replicate the originals.

Here's mine, currently wearing dark brown furniture, as the mottled is on my retro AR10B. I would like to have this set done up all mottled as well though... Anyone want to help?

Regardless, it's such a light and handy carbine. My son loves it. Plus, soft shooting and accurate.

What is your 3 prong hider on the first one and where did you come up with that slip ring?

The 3 prong is one of a couple that can be found on the real prototypes.

The slip ring is a design colt played with in the 60s on at least the commando

Thanks for posting that information.
Mine were sourced through John Thomas of retro arms works, back when he used to do custom work.

If interested I can make a post on how I do the mottled brown furniture with detailed instructions and pics.  I think it looks really good and hold up.  I use Krylon spray paint, Minwax stain, and Krylon clear, and a cheap paint brush.  It's easy but there are a few little things to know

Now you got me looking up phenolic and CPVC tubing to see what it would take to machine one of those handguards and start another build!

Did you do the welding yourself?
I need to get my bayonet mount welded, and the slip ring anodized, and would love to get a selector made up to work with the original selector arrangement,  but have not really looked for anyone after hearing JT doesn't have time for custom work anymore.
