A tall 50 will hold 30 USGI 30 Round Mags with Magpul Ranger Plates installed.

You can see one of my rows has 6 USGI Mags (3 with black, 3 with OD Green Ranger plates) and one Pmag in the middle of them.
So you can easily put 4 rows of 7 + 2 more on the end turned sideways.

My FAT 50 holds 21 PMAGS + 6 USGI Mags - all with Ranger plates.  810 rounds of Ammo easily carried.

Unless you possess powers that defy the physical universe,  I suspect we are just mixing up the terminology used in the various pattern ammo cans issued in the US.

I'm using this style can http://store.oldgrouch.biz/vierata50amc.html , not the "fat .50" SAW can (, which I use for storing multiple 25 rd boxes of 12 ga ammo ;-))

Is a Fat50 and a SAW can the same thing?

Then a tall 50 is ? A different animal?

A tall .50 has the same footprint as a regular M2A1 50 cal can, but is 10" tall. They are also called N463 boxes and/or Fuse boxes.

A fat .50 or SAW can is an inch greater in every dimension than a regular M2A1 can, since it is designed to hold 4 200rd magazines for the M249 SAW

For comparison's sake, if you use a "short" 50 cal can you can get the following:

20x 30Rd mags if some have Ranger plates (right), or 22x 30Rd mags if they don't have Ranger plates (left)

Or if you use a MTM 50 cal magazine can, you can get 15x 30Rd mags in it. Lots of waster space in these.

The large Plano box will hold 25 PMAGs in the wrappers if you stack them right.

I know it isn't the answer you asked for, but incase you or others are looking for other options....ammo cans I quickly learned work well for me for ammo but NOT for mags.  You just can't store enough mags in them.  I use these large MTM "Ammo" crates for my mag storage...they are stackable..and they hold lots of mags  :)

I wish there was a can that's as tall as the "Fat .50" , but same width as the standard .50.

I don't know how you guys store your magazines vertically in the regular 50.  Mine seems to press right against the corner of the magazine when shut.  I don't like that since it could damage the feeding lip area.

The Tall .50 gives me comfortable room for (24) 30rd mags w/ Magpul L Plates installed and standing on end, 4 more of those laying flat on top, and then (2) 20rd mags to fill the void:

Google "N463 box" and you'll find https://synergydefence.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1715 saying they have 385 such cans in stock at $19.95/ea.

Yeah, I have some fuse cans too.  It's too tall for my liking.  24 magazines is perfect for my situation.  So now I have 3" wasted space per can that I would rather use for other things....

Actually 28 PMAGs will fit nicely in the Fat50.

I think you can throw a couple more on top also. So w/+2 that makes nice use of those 900ct bulk packs.

I got a comfortable 14 in a regular 50 can. Cut up some cardboard and foam to use as fill and protect the feed lips.

Could have put some more in there but it would have been a tight fit. Also 14 is a nice even two combat loads.

I guess I'm going to get some Fat 50s to store my PMags in. Seems like the best option.

Anyone have any pics of there can setups?

I've been using one of these to haul AR mags to the ranch and back the last 3 years https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVDFSQ0/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_MSACCbG4Z0GP7, the foam keeps them from banging around in the ammo cans when I'm bouncing around in the jeep, plus its easy to keep organized

MTM makes some nice utility crates that make perfect mag storage. For some reason, though, they are getting hard to find on Amazon.

I have a "Tall-Fifty" with 30 USGI mags and 3 20-round PMAGs. 4x6 with one row of 6 USGIs laid sideways on top, and the three PMAGs going perpendicular to fill in the leftover space.

Yeah, even before the COVID-19-induced run on gear, they were getting expensive on Amazon for some reason. I bought several of the large ACR8 Ammo Crates from Amazon over the past few years for around $15-$18, and about 6 months ago, they started going up in price, now averaging about $35. I was able to pick up two at my local Sportsman's Warehouse a couple months ago for $12 each and two at a show recently for $15 each. They are my preferred storage box - I find the size just right for holding a good amount of gear without being too heavy to make them a hassle to move around.

I have a couple of the ACR8-72 crates. They were about $18 each when I got them. I saw they are now $39. That's a huge price jump. Amazon used to sell the AR-15 mag box, the dark earth one that holds 15 mags. I was looking to pick up another one and Amazon stopped selling them. MTM still makes them as far as I can tell, so I don't know what's up with that. MTM also makes ammo boxes. I've bought over a dozen of the 5.56 boxes. They are now listed as no longer available. Same for the ACR-12. I suspect that most of what MTM sells is made in China and there's been no production there for a few months. So, they are running out of inventory. The AR-15 mag box has not been available since last Fall, so I don't know what the story is behind that. I'm glad I stocked up when they were still available and priced low.

MTM is a family owned/ran business in Ohio which has been on lock-down except for essential businesses. Several of their employees are members of the owner's family. They manufacture everything in Ohio.

How so? There is nothing that I said that is incorrect. The information is publicly available if you aren't lazy. I made an account to specifically address the incorrect "China" comments since it is a local business for me and I went to school with several of the owner's kids. I actually didn't even know that the Minneman family owned it until one of them started posting goofy video ads from MTM on Facebook via their personal account a few weeks ago.
