Hey all, have a picture request. I’m trying to do a build of M4A1 that was upgraded, but this thing is having somewhat of an identity crisis. Using a C AF and an early SOCOM profiled barrel but my RIS II is 2008 dated, which is great, matches the SU231. I cannot seem to find any pictures of the early iteration of the RIS II with these vent holes.

Anyone have a picture they could drop? I’ll continue my research as I’ve come up empty handed but figured I’d ask here. This upper needs some work but finally finding the time to tidy it up. Thanks!!

@LsuJon Would you happen to know which bipod adapter is being used on the Harris bipod in this pic?  I see ADM on the Atlas bipods.  Curious if you know what’s on this one.  Maybe ARMS?

The vent holes got dropped because mounting a bipod up there was causing the rail to bend forward of the clearance cut for the FSB.

It's an early revision of the rail and was notorious for banana peeling when used with a bipod/accessories that mounted on the lower rail portion.
The original bendi boi.

You guys are awesome, really appreciate the lessons and pictures!!  You’ve given me some keywords to punch through this thread through Google searches with.

Do we know if my version was used in service? Assuming so and that’s why the revision? If so, any pictures of the holed version like mine in use?

ETA: I don’t know the validity of what’s said here but the timing is interesting in relation to the date on my rail.

Which is why my bipod is mounted further back, even so I'm overly cautious with it.

Don't worry about a barrel date as barrels are a wear item and get replaced.  New or old stock barrels got added.  I have rebuilt guns using Govt profile.

CD, heard a rumor that colt socom barrels with cage (but lack a date of manufacture on the barrels) are not MILSPEC. Is that true? Background, I bought a socom 14.5 upper from colt with cage code upper and barrel a few years back but the barrel lacks a DoM. The upper also has a cage code that is doted and not roll marked.

Think I've seen some Colts without the date code, bag does have the date on it also.  Don't have any new stock to verify.

...It's never done.  My old Primary Arms clone flashlight finally took a dump after 9 years and thousands of rounds so I replaced it with a Surefire this time.  I took the LPVO (Strike Eagle) off and put the Viper on it to see how accurate it is at distance on a bench.  Even with cheap ammo it's more accurate than I am and I can sure see better (100 to 200 yard targets) with this scope on it.  Shoots really well with some 69gr ammo I had.

Now I’m probably wrong on this

BUT

I remember reading somewhere the RIS 2 was originally designed with the intent to use on the A4 while looking to enhance the rifle to the next gen- like an A5. So yeah, I guess it could show up on a 20” with an FSB or mk12 gas block.

Edit:
I read it from a post in 2008 by Stickman. I don’t know shit about the guy other than he takes lots of fancy pics of guns and gear.

Yes the non fsp ris 2 was designed for m16a4. Fsp was for m4. But obviously that ain't how it worked out lol. But I can't see a gas block on that guy's gun. It's 20+ inch with mid or carbine gas

Just an evolution of the SPR with today's parts.  Could also use the Geissele URGI/Mk16 rail I guess.  I know of one group that is looking at the concept.  Remember the SPR/Mk12 used items that were commercially available in the mid/late 90s.  With shrinking budgets and using what is already in the system to fill your requirement.  Like most hobbists, using what we already have to fill the need.

What issues have you seen with the Geissele URGI/Mk16 rail so far? I’m interested in issues like discussed above on the DD RIS II rails and the lower part bending from bipod use. Anything shifting? Mlok bolts breaking? Ect.

@Combat_Diver  Have you ever come across the clamp on MK12 gas blocks on any of the rifles you worked on?  Saw some pop up as surplus take offs and was curious what they may have actually been used on.

Thank you, good sir!  I figured if anyone would have seen them in use it'd be you.  Greatly appreciate your expertise and knowledge as always!

Now it's really got me curious as to what in the world they woulda been used on, if they're truly surplus at all.

They look like the old Danny D clamp ones from back in the day.
No idea what they would have come from… maybe surplus as in PD or some Gov Agency.
I’d just stick with the known MK12 block makers

That’s good to know. One upside from years and years of conflict is that we really get to see what works, what doesn’t and what fails spectacularly.

Hmmm... FSP or Non FSP rail

Debating for the start of my upcoming build... Going with a magnified optic, either my Vortex PST Gen 2 1-6 or buying an ACOG TA01 ECOS

I'm torn, but leaning towards the non fsp... And my wallet isn't in a "Get both" condition

I vote for non FSB if you’re going for magnified optics.
Yes, I know the FSB will be gone or a shadow but why not just go clean from the get go… unless you get a killer deal on a FSB rail.

Both are awesome in their own right but having owned both, I prefer the non fsb, personally.

Oh, and if you’re going the pin/weld route, there is no question - non fsb for sure.

Build both. That’s what I’m doing. I’ve already got the non-FSB. I’m building an FSB with a KAC NT4 currently. My non has the Eotech and Magnifier currently but I’m going to pick up an Elcan for it, and move the Eotech/mag over to the FSB.

I’ve done several FSB uppers because I prefer the aesthetics but have swapped them all out to non FSB; the way I hold a rifle and with my body proportions, my thumb always wants to ride over top FSB so the non fsb rails it is, otherwise I’m riding block 1/mws style with a broom handle
