From the little documentation I've gathered, the #50M-CV was well liked as a standalone handguard but in terms of the actual contract requirements it and the URX II just weren't as good as the DD rail. Like the normal A.R.M.S. rails it used the standard milspec barrel nut and didn't require the handguard retainer cap to be removed, so armorers liked them for their ease of installation (at its simplest, you could just cut the delta ring off with a Dremel and install the rail with no further gunsmithing necessary), and it was the lightest option in the trials as it only weighs about 8.5-9 oz. The downside is that the actual installation process involves evenly torquing down six screws and with the wide tolerances of milspec barrel nuts it isn't uncommon to end up with the rail tilted up or down, so you need to use some sort of attachment clamped across both the rail and receiver to hold it steady while you install it or use the optional #50-CV03 Swan Sleeve to add some extra support. It's pretty solid once you do get it clamped on but the initial installation is annoying.

The main drawback of the #50M-CV and URXII were the M203 mounting solutions, both A.R.M.S. and KAC entered standard carbine length rails into the trials which meant they had to use separate brackets that clamped onto the M203 and slotted into the rail to free-float it. It works well enough, but if you lose or damage one of the brackets you can no longer install the M203, and the DD system was both more rigid and simpler to install, which was one of the primary reasons it ended up winning.

Did the trial #50M-CV differ from the civilian ones in any way other than the color? As in how can we tell the PJs' rail is a trial rail?

The civilian ones are identical, the FDE colored parts never reached the commercial market so grey ones are far more common but share identical design traits. There's three versions of the #50M-CV, technically the one I have isn't correct either for a trial gun and neither is the one the PJ has. The first batch of #50M-CVs to be produced was in mid 2005, it's characterized by a wingless Swan logo and "PAT. PEND." engraved in a recess above the barrel yoke screws on the right side.

The second batch was produced from early 2006-mid 2007, and added retaining clips and wire to the barrel yoke screws. The winged Swan logo was introduced sometime in either late 2006 or early 2007, so you'll see both on this pattern, albeit rarely (pic is not my own).

In mid-2007 the patent was formally granted and the associated patent numbers were engraved on a flattened out portion of the upper right side below the rail, as well as the flat for the patent pending marking being removed (also not my pic).

Of the few pics of FDE #50M-CVs out there, only one shows a pre-wire rail, several show the wired patent pending version, and a few show the patented version. The official Crane report of the RIS II trials in 2006 shows the wired patent pending version, which judging by the time period they were introduced and when the testing took place I assume is the correct one. I know they added the retaining wires by request, as the screws have a habit of jumping away from the rail and disappearing when trying to install the yoke, so this would make sense for the updated trials version.

The patent marked version wasn't released until after the RIS II trials had already concluded, so that specific version would not have been used in testing. The rail on the PJ's rifle does seem to have the flat milled for the patent info however, which would place it as a 2007-2009 unit purchase (the FDE products were discontinued circa 2010 or so).

In short, neither my rail nor the rail in the reference pics would have been used during the RIS II trials, however the difference is only in markings. I felt it was relevant to this thread given that this is probably the closest we'll ever get to an actual trials rail, all 4-5 FDE #50M-CVs I've seen in private hands have come from these unit purchases and all have the patent markings.

I'm sure you've answered this elsewhere but I can't find it- are you using clamshells for barrel install or reaction rod? Just wondering what you're preferred tools are for barrel and muzzle device install.

I always wondered why this concept didn't gain any traction.  For the way we typically shoulder an AR, it seems a stock like this could be advantageous.

I believe he is referring to the mount with provisions for the Docter and not the PVS-17 itself  which was extremely common.

Probably not much of a market as the factory build M7 RCOs have the info engraved on them and the rebuilt RCOs into m7s have the stickers.

I know of someone with one so I'll try to hit them up for images.

How close to a Comp M2 in a Wilcox mount is an Aimpoint PRO in this mount? https://www.precisionreflex.com/scope-rings/46-30mm-aimpoint-non-adjustable-x-high-1675.html

That's the go to stand in for the Wilcox.

How about the PRO? It's quite visually similar other than the lack of a rubber thong connecting the caps.

Slowly but surely getting there. Hoping to track down a pre-2007 barrel if possible for this build to get as close to an authentic RIS II trials gun as I can (not holding out hope for an older Gasbuster though). Upper is surplus from the 75th RR, installed a spare ejection port cover (that was kinda bent out of shape so it isn't a perfect fit) and ordered a forward assist roll pin so I could put that on. Both the rail and rear sight were used in combat, an Air Force TACP unit bought a batch of these rails in the late 2000s and the rear sight is an actual BIS II test example used in the trials and later issued out on a service weapon, as it has the very early version of the rear apertures (the production ones had a much deeper notch on the top for CQB/long range use). These sights were actually made prior to the instruction manual interestingly, as the examples in that have the final production apertures. Had Daniel Defense submitted a carbine length handguard like A.R.M.S. and KAC, this is most likely what the Block II could have been.

If anyone knows a good machinist who can tolerate this level of tism, I'm trying to recreate the right thumbscrews for this rail. DD doesn't even have the specs.

I was going to ask what the deal was with your missing thumbscrew....  Just get one of the thumbscrews that used to be used on the DD Light Mounts.  Same thing, and the threaded portion can be cut down if its a bit too long.

If the above doesn't make sense, I can take some pics to help you out.

Tacswap. He's got plenty more if you're interested, I'd originally ordered one through Wet Worx but they emailed me after three weeks and said they'd accidentally stocked a cage code upper as a Cardinal so I refunded it
