Don't get this ammo that often.  M955 AP.  Gun shoots dead on with M855A1 and Mk262.  No rezeroing after pulling off from my 10.3" URG.

Friday range trip was smacking IPSEC steel plates and 6 inch and 8 inch gongs at 300 yards and also CQB work.
Finished off with running 200 yards smacking steel gong at 300 yards. My heart was racing pretty good especially returning to firing line in 25 mile cross wind.
Ripped 40 rounds of Wolf steel at I'd estimate 70% hit rate. Thought I had my hold dialed in only to miss on follow ups.
Not sure it was me and lack of sprint cardio or variance of cheap steel case ammo at 300 yards and cross wind. Might been little of both.
I love shooting in crap weather!! You can't pull this stuff off in fair weather shooting when the range is chock full. Rainy days snowing days are my fav range days.
Day reminded me of Hohenfels Germany circa 1984-1986 , Wet, miserable and soaked to the bone after 4 hours of gunning!!
Had no issues running the little work horse 3x in CQB reps. She's a keeper despite weighing in now at a hefty 9.19 lbs.

The PA 3x Prism is an ugly step sister to the ACOG. Not a prom queen by any stretch and I may be committing sacrilege in the clone thread by showing her.

Not as sexy as her sister the Acog but like a Timex "takes a licking and keeps on ticking

Would I like an ACOG? Yes!! but my budget allows for the PA 3x for now. Budget option for guys considering glass.

You may be one of the few Army guys that I've met that rocks the M1 sling on the M16.
Must be an Army thing to run the sling inside out.

Any of you guys build any AR/M16A4 clones using barrels with heavier profiles then the A2/A4 Gov. profiles?  I built my AR15A4 with a 20" Criterion Hybrid contour barrel.  I still need the KAC M5 RAS rail, rail covers and VFG.

Time to buy an ACOG and complete my clone.

Is the discrepancy between TA01's and a TA31RCOA4's BDC reticle noticable? Is the extra cash for an A4 worth it over a cheaper TA01?

My A4ish build.  My oldest son and I built this as an A2 from PSA parts a long time ago.  Long story, but we don't really speak anymore.  However, he did overcome some hurdles, and he leaves for Marine Corps boot camp before the end of the year.  I decided to finish the rifle as an A4, because thats what he always wanted, and give it to him as a boot camp graduation present.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the A2 grip either, tore my hand up in training. I run a magpul grip on my A4 clone, I also have some other features on mine that aren't clone correct BUT my attitude is it's my rifle. But I really like it! Good job!

Is this M5 legit?

I asked in another thread, but don't believe I got any definitive answer. Tig and others helped a ton, but I don't think we ever got to the bottom of it. Asking again before I forget; will pick up a legit rail if this one is suspect.

This came equipped on a Colt AR15A4 I recently acquired in a trade. All in all, it seems legit; however, I've never seen an M5 void of any markings under the top rail or the bottom rail having a screw.

It also came with a VFG and a full, bagged panel kit. Compared to the M4 RAS I have, the panels, bag and VFG are legit.

This is my first M5 so I'm not familiar with them, it just differs from all of the pictures I've found on the net.

Box:

Top rail, void of any markings:

Bottom rail; heat shield looks legit:

M203 Barrel Stop:

Missing spring; anyone know where to source another?

Top AND bottom rail have screws? Yes, I removed them:

Thanks, I was planning on ditching them for an m5 ras anyway. Did yours come with a palmetto marked bcg? Not sure if it's the freedom or the premium line that has those. Also, is this the same FN barrel as the military A4s just with different markings?

Actually mine wasn’t the CHF premium... the barrel was just chrome-lined and PSA marked. I dont think I’d gotten it with a BCG at all. But it still shoots well.

Sorry for the mixup.

Hey folks, I considered posting this question in the Barrels subforum, but I figured all the A4 experts are here, so I’d get more feedback from this thread. I have two FNMI A4 barrels, one ‘03 FNMI-marked that I got last year off eBay (believe it or not) and an ‘09 CAGE code barrel that came from Ohio Ordnance as part of one of their complete uppers. The FNMI-marked barrel appears to have some kind of smooth coating over the parkerized finish, and I was wondering if that is something that FN did in the past when finishing their barrels, or if that might have been something a secondhand owner did. In the photo below, you can see that the FNMI-marked barrel (on top) has a small chip in the finish just behind the crush washer (which is not tightened down, just FYI) where the gray parkerizing underneath is showing through. I noticed a little blemish there and picked at it with my fingernail, and the coating flaked off a little.

Attachment Attached File

The FSB does not have this coating, as you can see below. The barrel came without a front handguard cap, which I was planning to add, but it looks like there’s almost no gap behind the FSB to accommodate the thickness of the cap. I haven’t dealt with this before, so maybe there’s enough room to fit the thin sheet metal cap, but I’m wondering if a replacement FSB might have been installed and pinned without the handguard cap installed. The FSB is F and FN marked, so it could be original.

Attachment Attached File

Lastly, the left hand feedramp has a bit of metal flash, or something, along the left side, which could be easily filed down (or worn down by feeding rounds), but it seems a little sloppy.

Attachment Attached File

I also have an FNMI A2 barrel, which is not coated like this - its finish looks the same as the CAGE code barrel. Thanks for any insight that you all can offer - I’m pondering looking for another FNMI-marked barrel or maybe asking John Thomas to refinish and reassemble this one (it has some finish wear on the FSB ears and needs a sling loop added also). I’m being picky, but I’m trying to clone the brand new A4 that I was issued back in ‘04 and would like it to look new.

Those are legit. Numbering is different than the standard RAS. I believe they were originally produced for Canadian forces. They have the SAS type bottom. For some reason I’ve  see a lot of these on M16a2 rifles in NG units.

If you go the Service rifle route dont forget the set screw FSB.  If you do, you'll have to shave off your sling swivel tabs, the tube has one built in that wont fit with a standard fsb so your sling wont pull on the bbl.

What lower parts kits is everyone using for their clones? Also, I understand there are "F" marked and "FN" marked bolt carrier groups. Which would be correct for an FN m16a4 build?

I’m planning to use Colt LPKs in all clones, since they’re as close to GI as I can get and probably share suppliers for at least some of the parts with FN. my understanding is that FN military rifles have had both FN and F on the bolt carriers at various points, but the plain F seems to be the more recent standard.
