Just curious, does anyone actually ever use those intermediary magnifications on a an optic?  If so, I'd love to hear more about when you find them useful and how you use them.

To me, it just seems like I use 1x or 6x but never land in the middle.  1x for close targets and 6x because that is what the scope is sighted in at for longer shots.  Personally I'm talking about a Primary Arms 1-6x but I assume this applies to many other scops.

I use 2x and 3x quite a bit when targets are >50 yards and <150 yards.  This allows you to have more magnification than just a red dot without paying the smaller FOV penalty at 4X or 6X.

I haven't got to seriously try a SFP 1-4x scoped Service Rifle yet.

My plan is to move the magnification to match the reticle to a 6 MOA bull with a 1-2 MOA gap around it (thick part of duplex or circle). At least for Offhand and Sitting. Then dial to max for Prone.

I do use the 3x or 2x settings for close in but not point blank shots as super set said the 50-100 yard range is a range where some magnification can be helpful for some targets but 6x may be much.

Yes, at night, when you need more light gathering ability.

I have a PA Platinum 1-8X on my 3-Gun rifle and use 2-4X on the reg in matches.

I have a couple of Steiner Militay 1-4's on my practical rifles and almost never use 2X or 3X.

I have when hunting at relatively short ranges where some magnification was still nice.

I use 2-3x a lot in 3 gun at 50-100 yard targets.

Nope. I'd rather have a throw lever from 1 to 6x. It's not say I wouldn't use 3x or 4x but I'm looking for either fast quick target shots or precision / long range.

I will a bit, but yes I’ve also noticed my 1-6’s are usually used as 1 or 6’s. When hunting and moving through denser brush I dial out to 1. When I’m moving through more open terrain I’ll up to 3, and when set up I’ll crank it to 6. Works so far, but I’ve never had to snap shoot anything offhand so far either.

Low light sweet spot on these optics appears to be around 3-3.5x so yes.

Ability to modify the BDC map by locking out the cat tail against the receiver at 2x or 3x so forth and so on.

This method will allow you to find a trajectory map that matches a bdc for a load other than what it was designed for.

It is used in conjuction with software such as Strelok to easily find a load and magnification that will work with your bdc.

This is a useless technique on FFP optics however.

Same here. Typically around 2-3X when I'm shooting off-hand, standing, 3-gun. I only use 6X for target shooting from the bench. I cant keep the rifle steady enough unsupported to take advantage of more magnification. 1X is best for <25 yards.

Only used the 1x and high end

Unless I'm shooting casually, I rarely use max magnification on most of my scopes.  The more I shoot, the more accustomed I grow to using less.

I use 3-4x already at 50 meters usually.

6x at 100 meters and beyond 150 meters 8x

I got away from variables at the moment mostly because I never had them lower than 3X.

1.1 to 2.5 magnification is a terrible two eyes open magnification range for me. I can't track with out feeling like I'm drunk in that mag range.

It's just something you can get used to with a little practice. Focus on the target, all you're really doing with the optic is looking through it. With a bright enough illuminated reticle you can easily just put the illumination on the target and make good enough tactical hits.
