I mark the floorplates like this as well. I use a paint pen from the hobby store. |

I use a sharpi....they get numbered 1-xxxx in the order they are obtained by brand with the brand initial in front of the number(s). 15th colt I got? C15 2nd brownells? B02 9th Center? CI09 40th Okay? O40 you get the picture

I don't have them numbered currently but I think I will just use a paint pen in the future. I do designate the load as follows and I copied it from someone else on here. I got a multi-color pack of electrical tape at the hardware store.

| On my aluminum USGI mags, I have an insert I place into the base of the mag (fits tightly) and use a metal number stamp set to punch in the magazine number into the side. Easy, remove floor plate & guts, insert stamping insert into the mag & punch in the mag number! You can silver sharpie or paint sharpie to color numbers but I just leave them. I have some of the color ones for my friends. |

I have lots of mags...about 200 out in my gun room...most pages Never seen the need to mark them... If one isn't working it goes directly to the round filing cylinder...where my brother will most likely take it out and to his house...can't understand him... 
But, never had any issue with missing mags...but, I also have my range at home too... I can see labeling for comps and range use to get your mags back... If shtf...it's not worth labeling at that point... My personal mags are in ten x6 mag pouches... All loaded by color...855-tan 193-black...but I usually just look at the tip color...old habits... Paint pen on go time mags, with a letter and number (1a, 1b, 1c.... 2a, 2b, 2c,...... ect)
Training mags get the krylon'd fluorescent orange, have my last name, and a number, in black paint pen. This stops them from getting lost or growing legs. I keep a excel .doc with mag numbers, date of purchase, price, make, and if they are training or go time. Probably overkill, but i'm anal about keeping records of EVERYTHING To mark what they are loaded with I use different colored e-tape. Green - M855 red - M193 White - Mk262 Yellow - steel All like loaded mags go into a color coded ammo can, loose ammo is stored the same way. |

Not to long ago I was at my local flea market and a fella had a box of post and pre ban mags from different manufactures. There were 46 in all, I bought them for a Benjamin.. Most are 5 and 10 round converted mags that look like 20 or 30 round mags. I came up with a system to mark the mags as follows and it has served me well.
EXAMPLE: 1-01 FOR A 10 ROUND MAG FIRST IN SERIES There were 23 (10) rounders' some looked like 20 and 30 round mags. 2-01 FOR A 20 ROUND MAG FIRST IN SERIES There were 14 of those 20 rounders'. 3-01 FOR A 30 ROUND MAG FIRST IN SERIES There were 3 of these in 5-01 FOR A 5 ROUND MAG FIRST IN SERIES This finished off the lot. I liked the system so well I now mark all my mags this way. I use a bright red paint pen to mark them all with. |

I used a paint marker and wrote my last name on my mags, this was to prevent them from "walking off" with someone as I had purchased some pmags to replace the standard issue magazines. I've seen guys use stencils like what you've got posted and do everything from their initials all the way to putting their battle roster number on their magazines. . . not sure why they did, except it looked kind of cool, albeit slightly. . .overzealous.
So if your name was John Smith and your Social Security number was 123-45-6789 your battle roster number might look like (depending on different SOPs) JS6789 I explained this concept to my brother in law, who in turn stenciled almost all his things like this. |

I use a green paint pen and then with my initials and a number of some kind. Usually the number that I bought the magazines in. For example my Walther PPS magazines are numbered 1-3 because that is all I have so far. My AR mags are numbered with Roman numerals to tell me what batch I bought them in. |
| Paint pen with my first initial and a number. Black mags get a white color, tan or spray painted mags get black color. When they are range / training mags they get red color line put on them under and above my initial and number. I don't color code magazines by ammunition type since the loaded ones get stored in containers with others containing the same load. On my vest, the Lancers have the bonded ammo, the PMAGs have the green tip and the GI mags have the M193. 20 round lancers hold 100% tracer. |

I know this thread is a bit old but I purchased paint pens as well, we just had a big 4th of July shooting match and some of my mags got mixed up with others, its all good because they were glock mags and USGI mags. Some got switched out I am sure but I figured I might want to mark them so I did. Thanks for the great ideas

I don't understand why people try saving broken mags and mags that only work like half of the time. At most just keep the spring, followers, and floorplate. The body is generally the issue and should be trashed when they go bad. Edit: Here's how I mark my mags. 
The call name and stuff are cool but no one knows who Alpha-Six-Niner-Bravo is they however can call out "J. Howell" and guess what I will respond to that I can can keep my mag during training instead of losing a mag. I keep the orange tape on their to make it easier to find them when they get dropped. My handgun mags just get the silver sharpie on them and they have to be written over sometimes because it get's erased after a while. |

I've been using whatever paint marker was in the team room to mark my mags. Initials and number on the base plate of whatever type of magazine I was using. ie M14,M16, M4, M9, M1911 etc been doing this since the late 80s. When I run my mags hard and through lots of nasty enviroments ie Alpine skiing, jungle, desert, underwater. I clean my mags when ever the tactical environment allows. Since I take care of my mags I want mine back off the movement/flat ranges. If damaged or failures noted in team room then it gets smashed with a hammer after being stripped. If it goes tits up on the range then it becomes a target to prevent use.

I suppose I'm old & boring; I've just been using a black marker since the 80's, and it's just been on the lower front edge of the magazine. (IE, if the gun was pointed at you, you'd be looking at the magazine number) That makes the magazine numbers visible even when they're in mag carriers.
That said, it's always been on the old-school gray aluminum magazines, with only a few FDE & other-color teflon mags. Have a bunch of black teflon aluminum, Lancers, and black magpuls that will take something different - I figure probably a white paint pen or silver sharpie, but haven't done them yet. |
| My FO mags are all windowed pmags that are kept loaded and seperate from my training mags. My training mags get a strip of bright ass orange and slightly reflective duct tape wrapped around the base of the mag. When at classes and events, it marks them as mine(I've yet to see someone with the same set up), and makes them easier to see on the ground/in the grass, especially in low light. |
| I don't unless a mag develops problems, then I mark it on the side with an "X" with a silver sharpie. If I can't get it to work, I toss it. If it can still work, I just use it as a range only magazine. I only shoot 4 types of loads in my AR's - M193, M855, 75g Match ammo, and 62g bonded soft point and they are pretty easy to tell apart when loaded in mags. |

I use a red paint marker.
Range mags are marked: R-01 and on HD mags are marked: H-01 and on I have a few tan mags I use for my heavier loads but all the rest are usgi and pmags I do the same for my pistol mags and also put a 4 dot mark on the bottom that I can tell that they are mine |

Scratch it with an awl.
I just put some form of unique mark on it. Number, letter, whatever. As long as between types they don't repeat so it has a "serial number"... At the cost of AR mags, and how durable they are... bad apples get the hammer. I've got better stuff to do than screw around with them. However, floor plates tend to get bent on me. Easy enough to identify and replace. |
