I had around 25 mags, but now I'm up to like 50 or so. |

Buy ammo
or buy a different platform that doesn’t take AR mag so you start buying different mags for a good reason |
|
You should have been around for the PSA packing peanuts days, my kids play with PMags like building blocks.

I buy magazines on sale just about once a week. AR mags mostly but I recently started buying Glock factory mags and other brands. A few at a time. I lost count of how many OKAY, Pmags and others I have for ARs.

Those of us who remember the 94-04 gun ban remember paying out the nose for mags. I consider them to be an investment.
|
|
I bought 100 of them. Seriously. Bought 100 a few years ago and it took away the urge, desire, “need” to feel more prepared. Did the same thing years ago with a pallet of .22 . You find other things to think about.

I just find myself with only a dozen or so getting actual use, maybe another 30 loaded up for peace of mind, and the rest just sitting in the closet in plastic tubs At what point do I stop buying the BCG with 10 P-mags deal from PSA? |

When I realized that I can only carry so many.
Then I bought some more. And then stopped. |

If you've lived through a Democrat mag ban, OP, you never stop buying mags. You align your firearms collection so that you only have to buy certain types of mags.

My issue is that different styles, colors, etc of mag give the gun a different vibe. Do I want a Lancer smoke, an fde pmag gen 3 windowed, or an Okay dry film gray in the old AR today? So I have too many not only to be prepared, but because I'm a slave to fashion.
And don't even start me on AK mags. Damn does that get nuts. |
|
I stopped buying AR mags when I hit about 200. I use 20 GI mags for practice, have about 20 or so PMAGS loaded with Gold Dot scattered around in different places and the rest in tubs.
Each pistol platform I have at least 10 of each size which doesn't sound like much until you figure 320 17+21, Glock 15+17, Staccato 17+21, FN 509 17+24, CZ Shadow, 1911, 365 XL 12+15, VP 9 17+20 Thats 160 pistol mags of various flavors. And I have more than ten of some styles. Even at that I still grab pistol mags I don't have a ton of when I find them for a decent deal. So to answer OP question you never really stop buying mags. I am more careful on the guns I buy now with the mag shortages we saw coming out of Mec Gar like the PDP and Shield +. I owned both and sold both when I could not get mags. That actually made me go buy more of what I could get for what I own. |
|
Acquire a mortgage, health insurance, a wife, two kids, medical bills, consumer debt, increasing food and fuel costs, you'll stop buying mags.

Quoted: What's a solid ratio? 10 (30rd) mags for every AR you own? View Quote The ratio should be based on the amount of ammo you shoot. How many rounds can you shoot through a mag before you need to replace it? I have some SureFeed mags with well over 10k rounds each through em, still going strong. So, someone that owns 100 AR mags but only shoots 5k rounds/ year ..... why do you need 100 mags? |

I think Iv got approx 500 ar15 mags. Approx 1/2 pmags , 1/2 aluminum and 50 Usgi old school colt aluminum mags, with some 10 rds for hunting. I got the 50 colt 20 rd mags during sandy hook. I put a ad in Craigslist at Clarksville tenn / ft Campbell offering to pay $10 bucks per 30 rd mag, and I bought a ton. One guy sold me 10, then said, “ Iv got a big bag of 20 rd mags, want them “? I shrugged n said I’ll pay $5.00 each. SOLD ! Another guy sold me 10 more @ $5.00. I love those 20 rd mags.
It was a gold mine. Pro tip for future panics. Plus Iv got ar10, 15-22, 10/22, glock, sig, and others. It’s really a investment at this point. You new guys don’t get it, but the Clinton ban really hurt. Walk into a gun shop and see a nice used 9mm for $400, and the mags are new 10rd mags…the shop selling the original 17 rd mags for $75.00 each…. But Leo could buy new 17 rd mags for $15 bucks. During the Clinton ban from 1994-2004, USED glock 17 / 19 mags and most high cap 10+ mags were commonly selling for $75-$100 bucks, 30 rd glock mags over $100. Used usgi $30 bucks, and people were using jb weld to try and fix cracked feed lips. Everything was legal to own, possess, sell, resell etc though. You can argue if you want, but the current, ready to go congressional ban, bans a huge list by name new semi guns, ( plus any guns that “ resemble them “, to block work arounds, new stripped receivers, sales of replacement parts, but mags are grand fathered, to own, sell, transfer, etc.…. Having them is key, and resell at a profit almost guaranteed worst case. Obviously they can always try and ban them later, but having them gives you more options than not having them. Same for spare parts. Stock up ! |

Just think of them as a way to save space. If you have 10,000 rounds of .223/5.56, you need 334 magazines.

When you don’t have room for more. I counted up my mags and have about $15k worth. Enough to justify buying a second safe just for them anyways.

My goto # of magazines per AR is 32. Nothing scientific, it just works our nicely.
For my 5.56 AR I have 20, 30 round mags; 10, 20 round; and 2, 10 round. For my 300 Blackout I have 10, 30 round mags; 20, 20 round; and 2, 10 round. I can't carry more than that, so it seems like enough. I just make sure I have enough ammo on hand, to double or triple fill each of those mags. That's the hard part. Bottom line, whatever works for you. |
|
Haven't bought a standard AR mag in 5 years. Last mag I bought was a D60, like 3 years ago. I will never go through the mags I have. Rather buy ammo to fill them.

I remember once acquiring 40,000 rds loaded in 30 rd mags (three large wooden crates). Shot most of it and gave the mags away. (some to arfcom members in Iraq at the time)
