My December 2018 Firearms News arrived. They have an interesting article on two AR pistols (223 & 9mm) with 7.5" barrels.
Looking at the 100yd Chart for the 223, the speed is given at 3240 FPS for Federal Eagle 55gr FMJ and 2" groupings.
I think they may get 2200FPS out of a 7.5" barrel and 2" Spread - well maybe God willing.
What speed and spread do you think is reasonable?

I'm going to say that's either a typo (should be 2240), or more likely, they were lazy and just used the MV printed on the box, which is usually measured in a 20" or longer test fixture.  As for impact "spread", 2 inches at 100y yards should be achievable with good technique/barrel/ammo.

ETA: Yep, they just took the manufacturer's published MV

2500fps is the fastest I have ever seen from an 8.5”. I would anticipate no more than 2400fps from a 7.7” barrel.

I would think that was the box velocity of the ammo being tested.

Gun magazines and reviews are advertisements.

Yep.  Many of our favorite youtube gun channels are run by the same advertising/marketing company who helps suggest which products to show off and which content they can and cannot cover.
And you may notice that they get excited about most of the products they cover.  If you watch some guy review 200 guns and he only has negative things to say about 1 of them, thats a sign.

The reviewers raving about everything does the actual good products no justice. I'd sooner go to Brownells or some other place where real customers post reviews to find out what a product is about. Still, a lot of people will leave a great review for a product that they haven't even used live fire and some will leave a negative review over shipping times, etc. You really have to wade through it.

That’s why I value posts here from real owners over any videos.

Most videos are made to get hits. Either “It’s a game changer!” or “It’s got a fatal flaw and will kill you and everyone on the range!”

Either one will usually get you to click, watch, and wish you could get those 5 minutes back.

You can't believe a word in any gun magazine. It's always been that way.

I don't know crap about loading, but why don't they develop a 223/5.56 round for short barrels using pistol powder like the 300BLK that burn faster and could feasibly get a 55gr bullet up to higher velocity than 300BLK?

55gr 5.56 from an 8.5" barrel is about as fast as a 110gr from a 16" barrel 300blk.
