Hi Team,
I was lucky enough to win a LaRue gift card, and it is going to get used before Christmas. I am not super familiar with their product lines, and I need some direction. I already have several 5.56 rifles, so I was thinking of doing something different. My available choices are listed below:

I was thinking of building something that could reach out and touch someone. I'm a little concerned about getting something in a new caliber that might not be around in a few years. What do you think?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Mike

6.5G

if this was an option when I built mine, I would have gone Larue.

What type of shooting do you like to do?

.224 is nice if you're into long range stuff
.300 blk is fun if you own a .30 cal suppressor, and supersonic loads are adequate for deer and other game

FPNI again. If you want to reach out a bit (a lot) further with an AR, go 6.5G. The .224 has got some solid ballistics, but it's even newer to the market than 6.5, and loses a lot more on energy than it gains in drop and drift against the grendel.

If the shortest distance you'll shoot is under 500 yards, go with 6.5 Grendel. If it's over, 6.5 Creedmoor

I personally wouldn't 'waste' a Larue on 300BO

Eta of those, 6.5G. I assumed you had access to the large frame calibers too

500yds is boring with even a 12" Grendel, at least for me.  No matter what barrel length I've shot with 6.5 Grendel, 500yd targets have never been a challenge unless you go smaller than 10" in the wind, and even then, I have high hit rate.  12"-18" plates are a breeze with 6.5 Grendel at 500yds.

Get the 18" Grendel kit.

There are over 50 factory loads for 6.5 Grendel, including 3-5 from Hornady, 4 from Federal, a bunch from AA, Wolf steel case, and a bunch from Precision Firearms.

I have all the calibers shown and I shoot 6.5g the most. It is becoming my go to gun

What he said.. 6.5G is quickly becoming my favorite caliber that I feel comfortable taking out to distance with confidence. Tho I built my own, you can NOT beat LaRue's kit for their price point. They just didn't offer a 12" barreled option, is what I wanted first and foremost...

Just my .02 worth

Another vote for 6.5g.  Has also become my first out if the safe for most hunts.  Even at shorter ranges it performs well above my needs. I am limited to only 200yds at the range.  The 4" gong is almost boring.

I have 556, 6.5g, 300blk, 458socom, 308 and 22 hellcat.   All but the 308 are in ar15 platform.  The 6.5 see's the light of day the most.

Looks like it is going to be 6.5G. Since I am in Michigan, there aren't a ton of opportunities over 500 yards, so it should be perfect. Thanks for all of the advice.

Even under 500, it's a harder hitting round compared to 223 and shoots flatter.  Better in nearly every way except for cost.

Make sure you don’t want a Stealth first, they shoot lights out and are about the best deal going south of something like a Krieger. If you don’t want one of their 5.56’s, and their 5.56’s are hot, I’d definitely pick up the 18” 6.5G. I’m also very hesitant to throw in with new calibers, but I wish I hadn’t waited so long. My 6.5G’s are such versatile rifles. Cheap wolf steel case, great value precision American Gunner, higher end precision like ELD-M’s and FGMM, and hunting ammo like SST’s. Very efficient BC’s, and the ability to shoot much larger projectiles for hunting. You won’t be disappointed, and will likely want to build a second 12.5”ish.

ETA: This is assuming you don’t want to go large frame. Their .308 and 6.5C UU’s are a great value.

6.5 Grendel

I’m not sure that I need to elaborate on why at this point.

My LaRue Grendel landed the other day. I can’t wait to go shoot it. Since I’m an 07 FFL who custom builds ARs (including cutting my own parts), ordering something “off the rack” simply feels wrong but, with the reviews that I’ve read, I simply couldn’t avoid it.

I'd love to get a large frame, the problem is I have a brand new DS Arms 5.56 lower just waiting for an upper.

Is the SURG an option?

Get both of course...

18" in 6.5G and a 300BKO in shorter...

If i didn't like where I do I would be all over this.

6.5G seems quite popular, requires a bit of finicking with magazines from what I've read.

I've also read where .224V holds up better compared to 6.5G, but requires the 6.8 magazines. Either is going to be better ballistically than the 5.56,

Have 3 different types of mags.  None require fidgeting with.  Run right out of the box.
