I know this has probably been discussed before. But I was wondering what kind of clear coat to use to give retro a1 style furniture that semi gloss finish to them? I know some people said you can do that with clear coat. Or am I mistaken and it would have to be semi gloss spray paint? Please let me know. I am working on a SP1 style build with a slab side lower and slick side upper. And if anybody has any pics I would really appreciate it.

Novus plastic polish will gloss them up.

Also Mothers Aluminum Mag polish does a great job..

Was it only the early handguards that had the glossy finish?
Or is it wear over time? I have several sets of shiny ones that all appear older. I have opened new in wrap guards from the 80’s and they are a matte finish. |

I have a bunch of NOS sets (6 hole slim handguards) from the 2003 time frame that do not have the shiny finish. I think they could be polished up though.

2000 grit sandpaper polishes them right up

White polishing compound and cotton buffing wheel on a hand drill works great. I recently did a set of Colt 6 hole handguards and they came out great.
