Does anyone have any insight on what type of fp is correct or if a changeover occurred somewhere in production between the fat head and modified firing pin? I've seen alot of conflicting info.

Thanks

From what I have read the flat head firing pin is what the 602 used

Left to right old to new. Blued fat head must be some sort of prototype from ?armalite costa Mesa?

Notice there is a media blasted flat head and a shiny flat head. Media blasted earlier?

In my observance, the 602 would most definitely have a Fat Head... and the blued head may be a “prototype” but I don’t think any of the prototypes I’ve studied have one, so the answer to that is a little obscure.

602 is a fat head.

The shiny late model appears to be an AR-15, not and M16

Colt contract dated 11/4/63 required 11 revisions to be done to include "lightening" the fire pin.
104,000 total rifles
85,000 with bolt assist to Army and Marines designated XM16E1
19,000 simply called M16 to the Airforce

Why do you guys do this to me? You all know my OCD can't handle it, someone say the 602 had a flat head others say it's a fat head, just like the rear sight and mag catch, some say they were both dimpled others say they were not dimpled, both groups say they have examined 602's in person, the black rifle book says one thing vickers guide pictures another thing. Me or my wallet can't take this anymore lol.

Ill come back with proof, but I would say early 602s had a fat head and late ones had a flat head.

Don't forget there's 2 styles of 602s.  The one with the angled area by the charging handle like a 601 and the later rounded area.

It's OK.  I still have my Hydra and XM177.  I'm going to have more fun with my new Kawasaki H2 SX SE +.  Only production motorcycle with a super charger.    Anyways, it would be fair to say that early 602's had fat head and late 602's had flat.  No one will ever know a certain introduction date for the flat heads.
