Just a disclaimer:  I know I screwed up, wasn't thinking, in a hurry.  Trying to assemble this lower and the pivot pin went in fine with my usual method using a razor blade to hold the detent down.  But for some reason, once in, I could not get the pivot pin back out.  I thought maybe the LPK was just a tad out of spec so I gave it a solid whack with a hammer in punch and sheared the detent off.  Then I found this.  You can also see my attempts to get a thin flathead under the pivot pin to help it out.  This is an Aero M5 lower, if it matters.  What was left of the detent was still holding the pivot pin like normal, but I doubt it'd stay that way.  I'm going to order one of those Real Avid pivot pin tools and maybe (?) a new lower.

No, scared it but didn't ruin it. My older colts don't have detents. Convert it to a large pin.

A true 1/4" bolt and nut will serve the purpose.  May not be as pretty.  A 1/4" diameter "chicago screw" would look prettier, just hit it with some flat black Rustoleum

Pretty sure it's still serviceable.

Check out the push button pins as an alternative.

Probably the best option. KNS makes them for both the ArmaLite AR-10 and the DPMS LR-308. The M5 pivot pin is a bit longer than the LR308 though, still worth a shot.
Another idea would be to fashion a longer detent out of suitable material and trim the spring. Cut a piece from a hardened R-clip of the same diameter and taper one end.

KNS pin:

I honestly don’t think you would have a problem once it’s put together.  It’s not like the the detent can go anywhere if it’s still long enough.  Nothing to lose by putting it together and seeing how it works.

Well I went ahead and grabbed a new lower.  Surprisingly the shop nearest to me had an Aero lower in stock and an Aero 308 LPK.  Things are going much more smoothly this time, so far.  I'll save the damaged one for another project down the road.

Blunt the tips of your detents.

Spray paint it.  Put it in a box with a card.  Give it to your brother in law.

If you could source an extra long detent for it, just shorten the spring correspondingly, and it should be stable.

Probably fine the way it is,worse case use a slightly longer detent and cut the spring accordingly

A razor blade to hold the detent down? Use a drillbit instead.Use it like a drift pin.

Exercise the crap out of all detents. Exercise them until they run or operate exactly the way you want them. No hang ups. Sometimes it might take 20-50 repetitions to smooth out. Whatever. I do it until I am satisfied.

Whats the advantage of blunting the tips?  Never heard of having to do that, although I did receive some KNS detents before that had really pronounced blunted tips, that I did not know must have a functional reasoning behind it?

96 escort caliper pin, already has a hole on it, bent the other end in a vice, it works great.

I use a hex key that just fits in the hole. Push the detent in with finger, push the hex key to hold detent in place. Turn pin to smooth side. Use the pin to push the hex key out . The detent will be against smooth side of pin. Rotate pin to engage detent into groove in pin. Easy Peasy.
