I've been away from the forum for awhile but I do check in from time to time. I thought you all might be interested in some of my projects (irons in the fire).

Started out when I happened across an original SA-80 fire control group and it has spiraled from there. The guy I got it from said he wanted to build one as did I and suggested starting with an Airsoft. Turns out the fire control group drops right in.

At first I wanted to use AR-180B parts but that didn't exactly work so I had to design my own bolt carrier to use the bolt. Only problem was I didn't know how to do that. So I taught myself using Fusion 360.

20+ iterations in software and several prints later I have this.

Then a friend sent me an AR180B trunion and of course I had to model and print that.

What good is a trunion without an upper receiver?

Lots of work and design ahead to get the SA80 L85A2 working but even if I stopped working on that today I have still learned so much about designing these bits and there is more to come.

Sometimes I find it more fun than being in the shop building guns. At least I can do it while I am on the road for work.

Anyone else play with this stuff?

I used to use CNC equipment to build guitars (before TechShop closed).  I like Fusion 360 for CAM, but prefer Rhino3D for CAD.

Are the planes to build a fully functional sa 80?

That is my hope. Building a working SA80 L85A2.

Long road ahead to make that happen.

Great project OP!

There are a couple of original parts on eBay right now like the carry handle and polymer handguards.
Let me know if you need help from Europe

Is the SA80 expected to be scrapped out?  It would be interesting if SA80 kits got dumped into the market like the L1A1's did in the early 90s.  I've seen the SUSAT scopes for sale here and there.

Damn, and you learned fusion by yourself?

Yes. I have been playing with it for a couple months.

Lots of youtube videos that can get you up to speed.

I started modeling stuff that I actually had in hand. A good set of calipers and radius gauges and you can model just about anything.

That is awesome!  I’ve been playing with fusion 360 to prep for getting a CNC Mill this summer but I suck so bad.

A couple more questions:

How are you modeling the parts to scale? I'm assuming you don't have a real SA 80, so are you referencing the airsoft rifle, or finding pictures online and scaling them to what you think they would be irl?

Secondly, how are you going about the plastic furniture?

I am basing my build on the Airsoft rifle that I bought. Using the furniture that came with it.

I am using an AR15 barrel and an AR180B bolt. I then designed a bolt carrier that has a lower half that is AR180b and the upper half rides along the Airsoft guide rails.

I do have access to some original parts. I borrowed an original bolt and carrier and have a trunion and guide rods on the way.

I am curios to see if the original parts drop into the airsoft shell like the fire control group did.

It all started from this drawing I made on a plane some months back. The original plan was to use an AR180b bolt carrier as well. Didn't work out.

Awesome work, I have wanted an SA80 forever. I can't believe that no one makes even a .22 clone.

There's a guy on calguns Facebook who shoves 22lr semi autos into airsoft rifles. Doesn't seem too hard. 300-350 at most with a cheap 22

You should hang out over @ Weaponeer.net

I think I can explain why there aren't .22 LR clones of the SA 80 - it's apparently that bad.

Still gotta tweak this thing. Printing one out right now to test fit.

Third iteration. Still tweaking stuff but I'm liking it. More pics on my site. AR180S.com

You guys that get snowed in make the most interesting projects.

North Dakota gives us a homemade steel AR-180 lower; Alaska gives us a wooden AR-15 lower.

I got ahead of myself and hit it with some Flitz polish. Still needs more sanding but you get the idea.

First off, you’re my hero, second off, you’re doing exactly what I plan to. I’ve been looking at steel body airsoft ones. Which did you go with?
