Looking at taking a PSA 556 upper I have and use it as a 22lr. Looking to use the drop in conversion kit from Cmmg (Cmmg 22lr BCG and mags). My question is this - can I drop in the 22lr bcg and use it without a buffer tube? Strike Industries makes a buffer tube delete end cap I wanted to use and do a folding stock.
Will this set up work? Or will I Kersplode myself? |

If you are talking about the CMMG .22LR conversions then absolutely feasible with the right parts, no need for a buffer tube.
Both of these SBR’s have CMMG .22LR conversions. Attached File |

You don't even need a tube or retainer. The 22 carrier stays in-place, w/in the upper, while the bolts reciprocates.

View Quote True, however w/o the spring and buffer in place (perhaps with the addition of BoreBuddy's plastic plug that goes over the buffer), there is a bit of "wiggle room" that allows the entire BCG to move a bit. With just an endplate, a small spacer (a dab of silicon, for instance) will keep it in place and enhance reliability. |

@princeton your top sbr is what I’m looking to do, just with my 16” upper. Other than the CMMG 22lr conversion, what else would I need to make it run right?

99% sure I used this folding stock adapter from Bore Buddy.
Not sure if someone else makes something similar or not. And I’m assuming you are using this kind of bolt conversion. Either with a chamber insert or a dedicated rimfire barrel. |

View Quote @princeton has provided good advice. I see the Borebuddy 1913 adapter is sold out. The KNS with Flange adapter is the same thing, minus the QD hole. To your list for optimum functioning, I would add either the .22 charging handle, or better yet, fill the opening of a standard one with silicon, a poly spacer (sold by Borebuddy), or whatever. This is to stop the possibility of an empty case bouncing up into it and jamming the action. The other thing I would do is to invest in Borebuddy's standard stainless steel bolt weight. This adds some weight to the bolt, brining it up closer to where most semiauto .22s are. This slows down the cycle a bit, which eliminates bolt bounce. Look on YT for vids of CMMG style BCGs with weight, and without. Finally, I've not experienced it, but firing pin breakage seems to be a thing with these, eventually. Borebuddy offers beefed up firing pins and extractors. |

You shouldn't need the buffer, but the thing I like about the conversion kit, opposed to a dedicated upper is just swap your bolt and back to .223/5.56.
It really is just a swap of bolt and mags. I did not remove my buffer and no ill effects. |

However, if one wants optimal performance (accuracy), a dedicated .22 LR barrel is the way to go. The cool thing is that the .223/5.56 chamber adapter may be removed from the BCG and replaced with the dedicated .22 LR collar needed when running a .22 LR barrel if one eventually decides to go that route. |

Don't need a buffer with a .22 conversion but if you really want something to keep the bolt from flyiing out the back cut a broomstick to length and install it.
