Standard grease is fine.  I've used the same tube of Valvoline bearing grease for years.  Never a single problem.  I've also used Aeroshell.  Absolutely no difference in performance or function for this application.  IMO people get too caught up in a specific barrel nut grease.

I had a USMC armorer tell me they used chassis grease,
IE regular automotive grease.

I have been using Mystic JT-6 for years.  I think I’m ok.

Literally any quality EP Moly does the job.

The Birchwood is more for surface rust prevention, it might work as a assembly lube, but wouldn't be on my list. Automotive is fine, particularly those with a high moly content. Stay away from anything with graphite, especially around saltwater environments.

According to drawing 8448522, 9349050 and 12997148, the threads are supposed to be coated with ANTI-SIEZE, P/N 12972645, Molykote 'G' (or equivalent).

And it comes in a much more convenient size.

I haven't used it for barrel nuts yet, but I do really like the Molykote G-N Metal Assembly Paste.

A jar of areoshell will last forever
That is what the specs call for
Someone will always try to use something different and normally no problem
Why ask for a variation when you can use the specific item

Despite what you might read, pretty much any grease, anti-seize does just fine. Never had first - hand experience of the dreaded galvanic-reaction phenomenon. Too many years of assembly / experience - verified.

If you use normal grease, get some black spray paint and paint your fingertips black for that moly effect.

/thread

I asked this recently. Have only done a couple uppers and always had used Aeroshell. No specific reason. Just what I had access to.

Had another I was putting together and didn’t have any aeroshell. Didn’t want to wait (can’t buy it local). Went to advanced auto and picked up a tub of Valvoline Full Synthetic Moly Grease. It’ll be years or decades before I need to buy more. Upside is it also can be used on trigger sears.

just remember to use the correct torquing procedure:

torque to 30 ft/lbs...back off. torque to 30 ft/lbs...back off. torque to 30 ft/lbs...go forward to the next notch

Anti-seize compound is pretty common for threading aluminum and steel together, such as spark plugs.

VG6 recommends using anti-seize compound when attaching their steel / stainless steel flash hiders and muzzle brakes to threaded barrels using crush washers.

I always try to use some oil or grease there, but anti-seize compound seems alright.

I've used pure white lithium grease once in a pinch, but Aeroshell is so GD cheap that there is no reason to not use it.

Last few I used bearing shaft retainer on the barrel extension and bearing grease on the barrel nut threads and shoulder of the extension. Antiseize is only good for getting everything silver.

They renamed "Aeroshell 33ms" to "Aeroshell-64".  Check your airplane parts, maintenance shop. I bought a grease gun tube (14.1oz) of it from "Pilots Hq" for like 14 dollars, 6 years ago. It will last you forever and you don't have to pay 12.99 for a little .5oz container you find on amazon.

As a professional engineer I have to say that anti-seize is better than grease. Grease may work, but when you study the physics and metallurgy of the threads, anti-seize is better.

Brownell's copper anti-seize is pretty nice to work with. No problems yet.

I have never used anti seize on a barrel nut.  However I am a heavy equipment contractor and have used most every anti seize out there.  The copper particle based loctite is the best I have come across.  It is better than the aluminum based stuff.

As a gunsmith, what he said. As for grease versus anti-seize, if you’re working with dissimilar metals use anti-seize, otherwise grease is fine.

in before GHP

The correct reponse would be to use what meets MIL-G21164 which is Aero-Shell 33ms I believe.

A lot of folks just use a moly grease that does not contain graphite.

I just use the suggested aeroshell stuff to be sure. I'm sure other high temp offerings that are similar will work fine as well.
