Ammunition review - Wolf M193/Prvi Partizan M193 (Page 4 of 6)
| update...replaced extractor spring after bushmaster advised me that i had prolly weakened the spring from lots of rapid fire. ran 300 rnds of wolf m193, and about 300 q3131 with not one hiccup. this stuff is just fine in my opinion. shoots pretty well. and is reasonably hot. |
|
Shot 60 rounds of the Wolf XM193 brass Prvi Partisan tonight from the 1k I ordered from SG. Box was marked "46". 2006 stamp. Colt 20" 1-12 chrome barrel. No failures to fire, no failures to eject, the only issue was the 60th round did not lock the bolt back. Accuracy was better than me. I didn't think it was dirty. Not as hot as the Guatamalan IMI surplus. |
| I finally opened the case of this stuff I bought earlier this year. 2005 and 2006 headstamps. Ran 250 rounds through each of my 16" bushmasters without incident during a 4 day rifle course with no problems at all. slightly more accurate than AE223 from my rifles. runs very clean. I will definitely buy more. YMMV |

Just purchased 2000 rounds to my door for $398.94 (shipped). Not a bad price at all. It's back order until November 28th I think. I have a RRA Elite CAR A4 that will eat anything I put through it so far. I re-upped my membership, got free shipping plus got a $10 coupon off the membership. |

Ran 50 rounds through a 14.5" Bushmaster yesterday. 1 FTF (Good primer strike) 1 blown primer found rattling inside a magazine. Glad I only bought 200 rounds. At least the Mini-14 seemed to like it. This rifle is drop-dead reliable with its normal diet of Q3131A and IMI M193. Several thousand rounds and multiple 4-day courses and I can't remember the last malfunction. Updated for lot number: PPU 0503-03 |
|
I only purchased 2 boxes at the last show. I did not know anything about it and wanted to try it since the price was decent. I fired the ammo on a 30 degree day with little to no moisture. Weapon was a 16" Bushmaster that was clean and lubed. I fired 2 20 round magazines without any problems. Not really a good judge but it taook far less of the Radway green to get poor results. |
|
Either this stuff is horrible crap, or my rifle or magazines are seriously broken. I went to the range yesterday with a freshly cleaned and lubed rifle, and 120 rounds of Wolf. I came home with more than half of the Wolf M193 unfired, thanks to problems I will detail below. My rifle is a Bushmaster 20" A2-style model, and is nearly new, having fired slightly less than 300 rounds before yesterday. After firing the last of my Guatemalan surplus (60 rounds), I tried the Wolf. I lost count of how many failures I had in the first 30-round magazine (Brownell's), but at least half of the rounds failed to move the bolt sufficiently to pick up the next cartridge. Typically, it went like this: 1) Fire chambered round. 2) <Click> on an empty chamber 3) Manually cycle bolt. 4) Repeat steps 1-3. That got old fast. If I had wanted to cycle the action by hand every time, I would have bought a bolt-action rifle. I dubbed this malfunction a "no-feed" in my notebook. The next magazine went similarly, with 13 no-feeds. Additionally, brass got stuck in the chamber twice. A hard tug on the charging handle extracted it. Inspection of the brass revealed no other signs of overpressure, and these rounds didn't seem particularly hard-recoiling or loud, so perhaps the brass is just lousy. I gave up on that magazine, and decided to try the magazine supplied with the gun (Bushmaster 30-round) to see whether it made any difference. Previously, the Bushmaster mag has fed Winchester white box rounds perfectly, so I had a hunch it would reveal whether the problems were with the mag or the ammo. I loaded the remaining rounds from the second Brownell's magazine (16 cartridges) in the Bushmaster mag. Results were similar, with 12 no-feeds and 2 times the bolt appeared to move partly back, but did not complete a cycle. In one instance, the next cartridge out of the mag jammed in a nose-up orientation, with the bolt resting on its middle. In sum, I fired 60 rounds, with the rifle functioning properly perhaps 4 times. When - more like "if" - the Wolf M193 cycled, I was able to hit what I was aiming at (steel gong at 200 yards). Can't say how accurate it was beyond that, as I was testing primarily for reliability. All this left me with serious doubts about both the Wolf M193 and my rifle and mags. Earlier today, though, I fired 40 rounds of XM193 with a combination of Bushmaster and Brownell's magazines, with no malfunctions and consistent accuracy. I guess Wolf M193 isn't such a bargain after all. FYI, lot number is PPU 0503-03. Brass has 2005 headstamp, boxes have "47" stamped on them. |
Your rifle and mags are probably just fine. It appears Wolf (PPY) M193 is "hit or miss" with some folks. Feed your rifle what it likes. I guess Wolf M193 isnt for yours. It works just fine in mine.... but, then again, all of my mags work fine in my 16" carbine, while they dont work well at all in some other weapons I've been offered to play with. I would imagine there are some mags and ammo that don't do well in my carbine. "say la vee" as they say. But really, Wolf should learn of these issues and resolve them.... there is plenty of great ammo out there that works in (just about) "anything". P.S. Have you SEEN the price academy is asking for their "Monarch" (PPY) green-box .223? SEVEN BUCKS A BOX? No way!!!! Its good ammo, but not THAT good! |

Sounds a lot like the one I used for testing.
That was my experience as well.
Yep - me too. What year was your headstamp? Seems more people have issues with the longer barrels. Seems to run just fine in carbines. |
| This sounds like early lots and is consistent with other reports. Early on the consensus was it worked fine in SBRs and carbines, 16" was kind of at the threshold point, and it was a bad actor in 20" barrels. I haven't shot any of this but I get the sense that later lots behave much better. if you have a chance to get some, or swap what you have for some 2006 production, try that and see if functioning improves. |

At the range today, I met a guy who owns several AR-type rifles of various lengths. I had my 20" Bushmaster and supplies of both Wolf M193 and Federal "Power Shok 50 grain .223 with me. We got into a discussion of different types of .223/5.56 ammo, and I related my problems with my rifle. It so happened he had a Colt AR with him, which had a 16" barrel. Remembering that it was said here that Wolf M193 works fine in ARs with a 16" barrel, I offered him some of my Wolf M193 to test. Surprise, surprise, surprise - it worked fine. He fired 5 rounds with no problems at all, and I fired several more in his rifle with equal results. I've yet to fire 2 consecutive rounds in my 20" Bushmaster without a malfunction. I guess the rumors are true: Wolf is great if you have a 16" barrel, but forget it otherwise. He expressed interest in buying my remaining 900-some rounds of Wolf, since it is useless to me, but apparently works in his carbine. While I would love to sell this guy my remaining 4 battlepacks, I am unsure whether it is legal to do so. I cannot determine whether an FFL is required simply to sell loaded ammunition to a private party. In my state, I can legally sell a firearm to a private party without any licensing or paperwork, so it seems logical that I could do the same with accessories or ammunition. Then again, the ATF is hardly logical or reasonable, so that's not an assumption I am prepared to make. |

I ran 1,100 rds today through 1 gun with 1 failure. A failure to strip the first round off a mag from bolt lock. That was quickly fixed with a little lubrication. Gun was a home built 11.5" SBR, CMMG barrel 1:7 on a RRA upper and BCG with home made feed ramps on a Tom Saywer "Zombie Killer" lower with a RRA LPK and 2 Stage trigger. It was shooting as accurate as I can shoot. I was tearing up an IPSC "A" zone on every target (yes there were plenty of double and triple taps out sid of the "A" zone. But if I aimed and shot the bullet hit hte "A" zone every time @ 75 yards using an Aim Point CompM3 |

I ran a 100 rounds of Wolf m193, Lot ppu-0503-04 through a bushmaster 16" fluted hbar. There were no failures whatsoever. It was 35 - 40 degrees and breezy. Mean: 3131 fps SD: 33.5 fps ES: 85 fps. As a control I fired 20 rounds of WCC 855 I picked just up from sportsmans guide a few weeks back. Mean: 2947 fps SD: 48.3 fps ES: 161 fps Also as a control I fired 20 rounds of Q3131 Lot: XB31 Mean: 3025 fps SD: 17.5 fps ES: 53 fps All grouped about 2 - 2.5 inches at 100 yds. I was suprised to see the wolf m193 was the hotter than q3131. I will definitely buy more. |

Tried 80 rounds for the first time today and experienced no trouble at all in either the 14.5" or 20" rifles. I didn't test for accuracy, but at 25 meters the HBAR kept 25 rounds in about 1.25 inches from sitting without a sling. I feel this is good for what the ammo is and the conditions under which I was shooting. 32 deg. I finished off my battle pack, no failure of any kind. When I cleaned the M4, however, I noticed a lot of grit in and around the carrier and bolt. I assume it was unburnt powder. I haven't noticed this with any other ammunition. I don't know if I will use this ammo or not again. I'm cheap, so I probably will. Steve |

I fired some of lot PPU 0503-08 Prvi Partisan white box last week. In the 20" gun it short-stroked frequently. In the 10.5" SBR it ran reliably. Definitely less recoil with this stuff than the Federal XM-193 and Lake City SS109 I was shooting during the same range trip. |
Your right. It is only cardboard and I do have some packing tape. |
60 rounds through a Colt 16" M4 upper on a Tromix lower, neither of which have been cleaned or lubed in ~ 2500 rounds. All the Lake City (LC) that went through this gun before (and after) the Wolf shot perfectly. The 60 rounds of Wolf, on the other hand, turned it into a single shot rifle. It short stroked (and caused me to pull the charging handle to clear the spent case) each and every round. The gun went back to normal perfect operation with the first round of LC after the Wolf. 40 rounds through a RRA 16" M4 upper on a different Tromix lower (both spotless and properly lubed), the first two rounds short stroked and the remainder went through the rifle fine. Lessons learned - If I'm going to survive the remainder of the 3,000 rounds in inventory, I'm going to have to go back to cleaning and lubricating after every shooting session (I got lazy because the LC never gave me a problem.) - This is decent plinking ammo, but not suitable for SHTF. I don't think cleaning will help. My guns are kept emaculate, and it didn't matter. I'd sell it to someone who has a gun that will run it. |

Good point, maybe I need to buy a couple of bolt guns and let my nephews dispose of the remainder properly... PaperMaker |

| I shot 200 rounds today, 100 from a 20" A2 rifle and 100 from a 11.5" carbine. Each weapon fired all ammo without a problem. The 100 carbine rounds came after 110 rounds of Georgia Arms 55gr .223, the 100 rounds through the rifle followed 20 rounds of Radway. Each weapon was clean and oiled at the beginning of the session. |

| Whats the difference between the stuff marketed by Wolk and the Prvi Partizan marketed stuff for sale in bulk by Aim Surpluss and others? I've shot the latter through a couple of M4s. Functioning has been good as has accuracy. Both guns shoot into about 11/4" at 100yds. Out of the 16" tubes, velocity has been in the 3140-3150fps range. |
| I've shot about 150 rounds of this through TWO separate rifles. 16" car and 14.5 Middy, both rifles had this ammo get stuck in the chamber, they would not extract them reliably. I have since sold the 16" and use the 14.5 exclusively, a put a crane o ring in it and it fed all rounds reliably. |
Are you using the brass or the poly wolf? |

I just shot off 200 rounds today through my AR's a RRA A2 16 inch and a home built 16 inch featherweight. Both ran flawlessly. I was just plinking so didn't put anything on paper, seemed accurate enough though. |

I guess Ill throw in my strange experience after finding this stuff at the last gun show for real cheap. I hesitated to purchase 1000 rounds so I settled on 350 of which I shot 100 already. At 100 yards indoors this stuff shot just fine for me... in fact it grouped just like the Ultramax 55gr FMJ and Black Hills 55gr FMJ Im used to shooting. The ONLY bad experience, and an odd one at that, was I had one misfire due to what appeared to be a primer pulling out of the previous round. Apparently the firing pin punched out the primer which somehow stuck to the bolt face so the pin couldnt make contract with the primer on the next round.... strange. I still shoot the stuff though! This was through a Bushmaster m4 16" heavy barrel carbine only a month old and very clean. |
On both uppers it was brass and poly cased wolf that had this problem. No other ammo has ever given me extraction issues. I broke the Middy in on Guat/Remington and put some of the wolf brass in and still get a tone of FTE, put the crane ring in, and it ate both brass/poly and asked for more. |

Shot 400 rounds of 2006 marked Priv Partisan M193 this past weekend. Put 310 through an 16" Colt 6520 upper and 90 through an 16" LMT upper (both on Stag lowers). No malfunctions at all, and was very accurate. The Colt was was brand new, and no teething problems as well with the Priv. |

I did some informal range-testing of various brands of foreign ammo this past weekend. One of the new rounds that I decided to shoot were these Prvi Partizan brass-cased 55 gr. rounds. Considering the current state of prices for good ammo (i.e., Federal XM193, Winchester M855, AE .223, etc.), I reluctantly decided to buy some of this ammo from AIM Surplus about a month back. Not knowing what to expect in terms of functioning, I hedged my bets, and only ordered a couple of hundred rounds. I ran 80 total rounds of this ammo through my Bushmaster M4A3 (16" barrel, 1 in 9" twist), and suffered no malfunctions. My rifle effectively cycled every round, and I experienced no extraction issues of any kind. There were also no apparent deformities or blown primers on any of the ejected shell casings. My 50-yard benchrest groups for this ammo averaged between 2.25"-2.5" with my Trijicon TA01NSN. In sum, while this ammo was not as accurate for me as M855 at 50 yards (my rifle prefers 62 gr. over 55 gr.), it's just about equal to XM193 and plenty good enough for plinking and punchin' holes through paper. Although I did not chronograph this ammo, I suspect that it's not quite M193-spec. In comparison to XM193, the recoil seemed lighter and it just didn't seem to be as "hot" to me. I freely admit that I may be incorrect on this point. -BK |
| Used over 1k of this ammo in a carbine course (with a H Buffer) as well as another 500 through various AR's and it all ran perfectly. Seems to be great stuff as far as I can tell. |
|
I tried this ammo and consistently short stroked. With a lighter buffer perhaps this would not be a problem (I may stick a std buffer in a rifle and try again). The plus side is that this ammo was very clean and at least as accurate as Q3131 (fired single-shot). Maybe it's just me, but this ammo seemed weaker than NATO 5.56 pressure ammo, more along the line of commercial .223 stuff. |
