What would be the recommendations for self defense in a short AR ?

Is M193 still viable ?

Are there better choices given the slower speed in a short barrel ?

Thanks.

For self defense I'd go with

77gr SMK or 77gr TMK. Among many other good options before M193 or M855

Most of the shorter barrels are 1:7 or 1:8, this means heavier bullets.  I’ve found even 62 gr will typically stabilize better, but really I like 69-77 grainers.  However, that really increases the cost.

For room distances and SHTF, throw some 55 grain in there and get busy living.

IMI Razor Core is quite popular in 77gn.

If you're talking self defense as in an asshole breaks into your house, anything should be fine, but id reccomend something that expands. Federal fusion etc

Gold Dot is also an option.

I use 4 different types for my 10.3 and 11.5. Well, actually I use them for all my rifles, but the SBR’s get the main use.

Nosler 64 grain
Speer GD 75
IMI M193
MK262 MOD1

All factory loads and can “usually” be found in stores or online. The Nosler ammo I bought at Cabelas for like 11 bucks a box of 20 a few years ago.

Gold dot in any flavor they work well in all lengths.
Also 1:7 can stabilize down to 50gr no problem Molon has serval post and videos on this topic.

What size is your gas port?

That is the real question. I don't know if it is under or over.

by spec's it should be .750 inch

Self defence, if in and around the house, M193 types should still be within reliable fragmentation range under 50 yards.

And even if it didn't fragment, the aggressor is still going to have a really bad day.

There are better choices, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it. In fact that's all I keep in my 11.5.

That's a very large gas port

Speer Gold .223 is legit out of short barrels. Not high in the velocity department but it expands reliably down to around 1600 FPS and a lot less flash than most 5.56 loads. My 10.3 SBR has an .070 gas port, which is a little small, and it runs Gold Dot .223 without issue with a carbine buffer and spring.

a PSA 10.5 barrel is also .750. Perhaps it is the new thing ?

I’m pretty sure you are confusing gas block size and gas port size in the barrel.  A .750 gas port would be 3/4 in hole in your barrel.

I do appreciate all of the suggestions. This must be a frequently looked for bit of knowledge.
