What bipods are ya'll using for these type builds?

I've used a lot of bipods for LR shooting, and I really like the 6-9" Harris and the Atlas bipod for that application.  However, I've never used an IAR/MG on a bipod, so this is new to me.  I was planning to buy the 9-13" Harris bipod, but I was wondering if there are any other bipods to consider.  Would panning be worth the reduced stability?  I'd think a taller bipod would be beneficial, but I also have a tripod that I plan on using quite a bit.

For reference, my build will have a 20" RRH upper and an ACOG+RMR on it.

Panning is more important in my opinion. It’s not a precision gun. Yes more stability would help the cone of fire but being able to traverse is more important. Finding a way to use a tripod would also be important.

I'm using an airsoft version of an M-60 bipod.

How do you like that PR stock? I just picked one up for my build but am waiting on a few other parts before I can try it out.

I like it, especially for this application, as it gives me a solid area to place my non-firing hand so I can pull it into my shoulder.

Exactly the same thought I had for purchasing it. It was either this or a B5 precision stock. Thanks for confirming it's suited to this.

Have any of you guys worked out the "beaten zones" that you're able to maintain? Or the effective range, the maximum range you can put, say, 5/10 rounds on a man sized target in a single burst?

LIke the SAW, point target range is 600m and area is 800m theoretically. Whether you have it hard mounted, bipod, rested, etc all come into play, and loading the bipod will change even that metric. Loading the bipod on mine, I have hit to 1000 yards at the Geissele range, but how many rounds out of the burst I could not tell you. It also took me 3 burst to get hits at that distance. I was able to connect at 400-500 yards easily and with repeatable results, and 750ish I was able to get at least one out of the first burst to hit. I have the fixed burris prismatic on mine, aim at the feet and let her rip.

Seconded. Just got my setup with this stock and it's great for offhand stabilizing.

I would say even better results can be had than with a SAW due to the better barrels. I can't find a great source, but I'm seeing 12 MOA for SAW barrels. I was never a SAW gunner so I'm not sure if it's that bad.

I didn't shoot extensively the other day, but I had a very tight beaten zone at 400. I need to go out farther next time.

So that 12moa is for a burst. Slow fire single shots at 100 yards you can get 4-6" groups. I never measured but just used my palm.

Going off my experience with my one iar build I can get much smaller slow fire groups but im not sure how much better i can do for bursts.

With my Colt 950 I can easily keep a 3 round burst on a IPSC target at 300y. Granted the cyclic is much slower than a FRT gun but it is open bolt. I love shooting full tracer in it because it is so accurate. Unfortunately finding a range with more than 300y for a MG in this area is extremely hard.

Oh okay thanks for the clarification. Still, any AR barrel will be more accurate than that. Worth noting as another plus for this system.

I was very happy with burst controllability.

Typical shooting tripod with a HOG/PIG-type saddle. Done.

One could get fancy with an Arca rail, but I, for one, don't like how much rail space those take up- usually rail space where your hands wants to be. In practice, I've never seen a difference in group sizes with a saddle vs. the rail.

Managed to run about half a mag through this to confirm the SS works. Had to file the upper back some to keep the bolt from binding but after that, it ran like a top. I might change is putting a PA PL-x 1-8x on it in place of the ACOG. I have to try both out to see which I prefer. I also have a GG&G bipod that should be Wednesday to compare to the Magpul bipod.  The Magpul isn't bad and it seem to tilt and pivot just fine, so we'll see if the GG&g is any better or if I'll return it.  The DT-PR stock is definitely nice on this sort of build. Being able to use your support hand to pull the rifle into your shoulder while on the bipod is extremely nice.

Should I put a light of some sort on it? What are the rest of you doing? Should I set it up like all my other 14.5" carbines w/ a light or keep it dedicated as an IAR?

Im sure a saw barrel could be more accurate as well. M4s requirement was for 4moa.

Remember they're using 855 as well

Is this a range toy that will only be used during daylight hours outdoors or is there any expectation that this could be used in darkness? Any rifle that may see serious use should have a light, and

Good-lookin' build. I'd go with an LPVO for the increased magnification to make PID easier. I prefer a mil reticle rather than a BDC, but Primary's got some good stuff.

Hell yeah. No two posted in here are the same.

USMC IARs are shorter. RPKs are longer.

I was looking to go shorter originally but ended up with a 20". I don't care too much about the velocity increase, but the increased controllability I do like.

The $60 barrel 03RN posted has spawned into a whole test bed gun for the Atrius ( funny how that happens). I have to get some of my extra optics back from my buddy, still not sure what's going on it. In the meantime I threw on a pair of MBUS and an HFXC for nighttime fun

13.6 pounds, and it runs like a top. The recoil is smooth, and consistent. A nice, controllable rate of fire. I need to get a better bipod though, for sure. One designed for automatic fire, with some panning. This one is just okay.

If you could rig up a high lumen flashlight, with a beam about the width of the beaten zone...

That could be interesting indeed. Though I suppose that's approaching laser territory of focus.

The LEP stands for 'laser excited phosphor', they are basically a fat laser.

At least at closer range the beam hotspot definitely looks beaten zone'y.

The issue I think would be 'aiming' the beam correctly for the POI zone. 12/6 oclock light mount would help but ideally you'd want to have some better method of refining zero.

How did you mount the M-60 style bipod?  I realize you have a Fightlite upper but looking at their site it doesn't appear any models are set up for a barrel mounted bipod.

I think I'm going to go with a straight fluted 18" barrel and I'm still deciding on either that DT-PR/PR stock or a MOE fixed stock.  I'd thought I was settled on a 3X prism but looking at the pictures here I'm rethinking that and think about either a red dot/prism with a magnifier or LPVO.

Before someone says it, yes, I know a rail mounted bipod isn't the best choice for accuracy but I like the way the M-60 bipod looks.

@SiVisPacem

@sandboxmedic

I used an adapter I got from @jm0502 who machined them himself. I bought two so I'd have another for when I bought a spare barrel, but I accidentally hit the threads on one of the adapters as I was trying to fully seat the bipod. That just means I'll have to buy another from him one of these days.

I bought and never opened three or four Surefire 60 round mags. I knew I needed em for something.
I think I remember hearing they weren’t the most reliable feeders.
How do they stack up to the Magpul drums?

I never had issues with mine, just the 100 round mag version sucked for me. I have never even bothered to buy the drums when 40 rounders exist for so much cheaper and now I have the 53 round stack lower

I think I missed the meat of the discussion. How do you fit that bipod onto a .750 barrel? Never mind. I'm sticking with a rail mounted bipod.

DUDE, I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Seriously, it is AWESOME! When fired prone, it keeps the gun nice and steady. When fired from the shoulder? Man, it's frigging crazy. Usually, a gun fired in full auto or even faux-auto will climb, right? No, that muzzle device actually pushes the gun down. I have a decent amount of experience with automatic weapons, including a couple years as an Infantryman toting around and firing an M-60 every so often. I have never seen anything like it. The muzzle literally drops and goes to the right when firing with the Super Safety. I have to keep the bursts short and bring the gun back UP on target.

Mocked this up before abandoning the project and scattering the parts to the wind. The heart of it was Spikes rifle gas chrome lined HBAR supposedly made by FN. The old VLTOR bipods were nice.

Hell yeah man, so stoked it's working out. I always thought it looked like a clever design, delighted to hear it's so effective.

Thoughts on the EOTECH VUDU 3-9X32 SFP as the optic on a IAR build?

I don't own one, but people say it has an awfully small field of view for a 3-9 power. For an IAR you want a wide, wide FOV.
