Ive got everything for the build except  the barrel, handguard, and BCG.
556 would be cheaper to shoot for sure.
300 Blackout  would cost more to shoot  BUT at personal protection disance hit harder bigger bullets.
I just don't know what do you think, that have made the same decision,

Thanks as always for the help.

If for personal defense and you have a suppressor, definitely 300 BLK.

If you don't have a suppressor, maybe consider 5.56 as it is less costly.

I have a Sig Rattler in 300 and it fits in a backpack perfectly, however in my home I'd grab my 5.56 way more often.

From what I've seen I prefer the way the .300 preforms in personal defense distances however I have way more trigger time on my 5.56 and am more comfortable with that. At least that's my reasoning, you won't go wrong either way.

Go online and look up the ballistics of a 5.56 62 grain bullet at say 2900 FPS. Compare that to a .30 cal 125 bullet at around 2400 fps. Which has the better retained energy or muzzle energy. That is a big part of the equation. Ammo availability and price come next.

Imho, the ACTUAL differences between the two cartridges is not enough to inspire me to add another cartridge to my reloading lineup.

Now if you want to step it up a bit....... go to Mad Dog Weapons Systems and look at their 30 GPC. But that is currently a handloading proposition.

IMHO, the 5.56 would be the better choice for your specified use. ymmv.

I have both and currently selling the 300 due to cost difference.

I have both  an AR-15 5.56 pistol and a 300 Blackout pistol. The 300 Blackout is what I keep loaded for home protection.

Both are good, but I think 5.56 might be better just because the rounds fragment and penetrate a lot less if you have neighbors close by. For hunting 300blk all the way though as animals have thicker skin.

I was going through the exact same concerns. Ended up getting a Ruger 556 in 300blk and ordered a Sandman Ti to suppress it. If you are not suppressing it then maybe the 5.56 would be better but from everything I've read unless you go for a 12in barrel you are going to have a lot of flash with each shot. I'm sure others can support or disclaim this, it's just what I read. 5.56 is cheaper so that is a real concern. But I knew I was looking to suppress whatever I got so after much research and deliberating I chose the 300blk. But I am planning to move the Sandman Ti to my SA Victor 7.62 and getting a Nomad 30 for the Ruger. Good luck with your decision.

300 Black only shines out of the suppressor at subsonic velocities.  I've always found subsonic ammo to be shit regardless of caliber.  Velocity is what generates energy is what generates terminal performance, and subsonic rounds have a hard velocity cap.  If you want heavier bullets, get heavier 5.56 rounds like 75 or 77 grain.

Really depends on barrel length.

Assuming you are trying to get as short as possible because you are talking about a PDW style weapon, the answer is 300blk, all day, every day.

At close (hallway) range, you need to run 77gr rounds out of a 12.5" to get similar energy numbers out of a 9" 300 running Vmax rounds.

8.3" with LAW folder, and 9" with TLR-HL and lens filter

BTW, fragmentation is a much a factor of bullet construction, as it is velocity.

.308 110gr varmint rounds at .300blk velocities become the damn near perfect HD round.
