Finally got my son's AR done. Putting a rimed cartridge in a rimless bolt head like the AR is a bit of a re arrangement of stuff but in the end works pretty good.
Heres some pics,

Magazine is aftermarket Desert Eagle 8 rd cap. Target is first group sight in at 30 yards, 5 rds PMC 240 JHP. If I had a crosshair & rear sand bag I would have a clean one holer. Funny no one has made a 44 rimmed AR bolt head for these. I had to mod a 450 bushy bolt and headspace on cartridge mouth to get this right. Ramp out the 6 Oclock lug out of the barrel extension. A few tweaks hear n there and bingo, a nice running 44!

Nice job!

I'm not sure why you did this but 'just because' is often an acceptable answer.

Any other projects on your radar?

Got any chronograph data? I'd love to see the velocity from the longer barrel.

Very impressive sir. This catches my attention because I have hunted with a Ruger Semi in 44 Mag. Always wanted an AR pattern gun to use instead because the Ruger was worth too much to take out. My compliments.

Bolt looks like some kid in china machined it / honked it out with rocks.

I bet it does not last very long before shitting the bed and lugs start breaking off.

If the bolt does break, OP will be able to do a Mark 2 version.

That's hella cool.

Good job. I love the .44, but I can barely afford to shoot it in my single action. I can't imagine how broke id be with an AR one. Totally badass though

The strength of the 5.56 bolt lock up is of course the consideration that the entire concept revolves around.  Just to give 2 sample posts that give you a little of what can be the truth in such a nebulous question, read these through.

https://www.thereloadersnetwork.com/2018/12/29/ar-15-reloading-do-not-let-this-happen-to-you/

But....... then there's this. The AR Reed Whacker story. I dont think I'd put my face behind this guys conversion but he has. I don't know if he's still around.
Start reading at #36 for it in the AR.

Holy crap, that's amazing.  Nice work!

Is this the first .44mag AR?  I'm not sure I've ever heard one, ever.

There are several 410 BCG’s that are commercially available. The rim diameter of the 44 magnum is 0.02 inches smaller than the 410. I’m pretty sure that bolt (410) would work.

Just curious but where can one get a .410 BCG without buying a whole .410 upper? Also aren't most of the .410 uppers piston operated with tabs on both sides of the BC face that are pushed by the coaxial piston? I guess you could remove those tabs.

As for the OP's AR44 mag, I think it's pretty cool and creative.

I'd call Bear Creek Arsenal to start; I've purchased odd sized bolts from them before. They can probably direct you to who makes them.

I have used 444 Marlin brass for 410 ammo in my AR; the rim size is identical to the 44 mag.

It was done 25 years ago.  See April 2001 issue of Gun World magazine for a full article on it.
