I have heard if you put a sleeping person's hand in tub of warm water they will wet themselves.  Have never tested it tho.
Einrich, maybe also test with drop to carpeted floor from say 4 feet?  2 feet?  1?

Way to show some balls Einrich!  I wish you the best of luck, hopefully my experience was just an anomaly.

BTW did you get any kind of booklet or data sheet with your Tacpoint?  Mine just came in a box labeled "Tacpoint, made in Japan" with nothing inside but the sight and all the hardware.

Mine came the same way, yeah I thought it was strange too

I removed both the Aimpoint and the Tacpoint from the tupperware this morning. I dried both of them using compressed air and a dish towel. Upon close inspection, neither of the tubes has any moisture in them and both of them are functioning 100%. Sometime later this week I'm going to take my ML2 out of it's ARMS #22M68 and put the Tacpoint in it and zero it. So far I am pleased with the results of my testing.

Einrich, have you tried exposing the tacpoint to some heat.  The condensation didn't show up on mine until I took it out to the range the next day.  Try putting it next to a hot lamp and see if you get any condensation.

I talked to Scopes and more via email and they said they are getting a large shipment in around the end of July and they will email me when they show up.  $109 for a red dot that can stand rifle drops works for me.

I'll post again when I hear they are in stock.

No offense, but that's kinda silly.  A picture of an Aimpoint in water only proves it can sit in a bowl for a fraction of a second.  If you want a 9hr movie, then that's a different story.  Would it really help you sleep better at night to see a wet Aimpoint?   I've dunked my OKO, M2, ML2, Aimpoint 5k and EoTechs in water with no ill effects.  I've left a couple of them on the bottom of my 29gal aquarium for a day...just for S&G.  Do you just not believe people when they say their optics are waterproof?

Edited to add:  I'm buying a TacPoint from a group buy on another site just because it looks like a good deal for a range plinker.  I'll probably dunk it, too.  If it fails, then I'll exchange it for a new one.

I just wanted to see to see if it would fog up a little then dry out like the Tacpoint, but nobody was willing to show us....maybe they just don't have the confidence in their optic.

The Aimpoints are waterproof....they don't fog up.  But a picture can't prove that.  That's why I don't understand your request.  Either you believe the claim or you don't...it's as simple as that.

7/12/2004 7:17:30 AM EDT

A picture could prove that. If one were to take said optic from the water it was soaked in, and puts the optic into something warm with camera in hand one could take a picture of it still likely damp and position the optic with the glass pointed at the camera either there will be fog, or their won't.

I agree. I believe my airbag will deploy in a crash, but I'm not wrecking my truck to prove it.
Aimpoint and EOTech both say that thier units are waterproof and combat tested, and untill I hear different from our boys overseas, I guess I will just believe that too.
7/12/2004 9:06:36 AM EDT
[#29]
Well I dont own either yet, but my 2 cents, as far as a aimpoint not fogging, Im kinda like strick909, I want to hear from our guys overseas right now,  and as tangochaser stated in this thread ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=192707&page=6
( I hope I copied it right), that even as tough as the aimpoint are when stressed they fog also, at least a percentage of them during his training did.  Still havent made up my mind yet on what red dot to go with, but I thought I read some where that the land of the rising sun were handing out the hakko red dot for their military, surely someone can find testing documentation for this, Ive looked but cant find anything, still searching
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If they used an Aimpoint it would still be up and running
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not neccessarily. I attended an Advanced Urban Combat Course prior to this deployment and the guys with Aimpoints in the class had a 60% failure rate. Most were from leaks causing the lenses to fog. The others just failed to turn on.

In Aimpoint's defense, CQC is very tough on weapons and equipment when you are climbing in and out of windows, busting down doors, wrestling with OPFOR, getting hit with simunitions, and fighting in the rain and snow.

Edited cuase I'm suffering from sleep deprivation, again.

So after reading this it makes me wonder how tuff is tuff, I mean the only thing I got to worry about is really nothing compared to our guys in Iraq, yes I will use mine to defend my home, and that is very important to me, but the rigors I will put mine through I just dont know how much damage I will inflict on my sights, as I stated, I own neither, but I am watching all of the hakko threads at them moment and "anal"izing them in my own way for what I will need it for, everyone keep up the good work. Thanks

Personally, I don't see why everybody gets all bent out of shape over stuff like this. The simple fact of the matter is that not everyone can afford an Aimpoint, or an ACOG, or what have you. And some just cannot justify the additional expense. So what?!?! Big friggin deal! Have some of you ever pondered for a moment that some peoples lives do not revolve around "cool guy gear," and may not be as much of a priority for some as it so often as, it so obviously appears, it is for others? If someone wants to strap a roll of Charmin on their damned rifle, let 'em. Now, this is a discussion forum and people will more than willingly offer up their opinions on such matters, but in the end some of you may as well just be arguing with a wall. I'm all for trying to clue someone in on the fact that they may be heading down the wrong path on certain gear, but it's rather pathetic to sit back and post snide remarks, pout, and whine when someone chooses to continue to go with certain other gear and ignore advice from the wanna-be "go farther and faster" club -- you know who you are.

Flame on...

Well I bought an Aimpoint ML2 yesterday, with ARMS M68 mount for $400 ($315+$80+tax).
I thought hard about the tacpoint,  and came to the conclusion that while it would probably be fine for everyday range use, I wanted something for SHTF. I may still pick up a tacpoint so I can rotate it around on my other rifles, for the range, plinking.

Figure 34. Gen I M68 with condensation

M68 Close Combat Optic
General discussion:

Most units interviewed that were equipped with the M68 had the first generation model. Some units had received the latest model that has incorporated many improvements. These two models will be referred to as Gen I and Gen II, respectively. The consensus across the AOR is that the M68 provides a significant increase in capability over the traditional post-and-aperture mechanical sight. At least one unit elected not to employ the M68 because they received them just prior to deployment and were more comfortable fighting the way they trained—with traditional iron sights. Both models were praised for the speed of target acquisition and accuracy. Those soldiers who were comfortable with keeping both eyes open during engagements felt that technique provided superior situational awareness. Units that had a Small Arms Master Gunner expressed greater confidence in the M68 and showed a better understanding of its capabilities. The Gen I suffered from poor reliability and drew much criticism. The Gen II model was praised for its long battery life. Many soldiers stated they had gone over thirty days without changing batteries, despite an on/off switch that constantly turns on inadvertently. Soldiers were confident in the M68’s ability to return to zero when removed and replaced (both models). The Gen II model was also praised for its zero retention despite the rough handling associated with combat operations. Boresight procedures were not considered to be burdensome, and the resulting alignments generally lasted for the duration of the war. Reconfirming bore alignment was the exception, not the rule.

WTF does this have to do with the Tacpoint???? It's like comparing how a series of early model Chevy 350 V8's did under torture testing conditions compared to a Yugo 4 cylinder under easy US freeway driving conditions!!!

Thanks EEJ, I was just too tired last night, if Im gonna buy a red dot, that might leak at some point, me thinks I would rather spend 100 instead of 400, but, Im just like some around here, its each persons money to do with what they want, none of my buisness what anyone purchases, thanks for the find. Also, someone correct me if Im wrong, and according to SWMBO, thats all the time, but doesnt the tacpoint have a lifetime guarantee where the aimpoint is only for 10 years and only for the original purchaser? IF  thats wrong someone please correct me, because I still havent pulled the trigger on either yet, but, the warranty is one of the deciding factors, thanks.

just  my .02
I have a Hakko BED-30, Multi Reticule.
Doccumentation says and I quote " Fully Waterproof" even with caps removed. I haven't tested this as NZ is a long way from the Store in the US I purchased it from.
I like it and yes cost was a factor, Aimpoints go for 1200 NZ dollars at present. I us it in 3 gun shoots and so far all is well. Yes we shoot in the rain!!
I can fully appreciate the guy's who rave about Aimpoints etc but I personally would rater spend the money on Ammo. Heaven forbid the SHTF down here I would be firstly running away until it's no longer an option. If I had to shoot then open sights may not be as funky as optic's but they work and the "dot's" never missing and battery never flat!!!!!!!!!

No complaints. Has been bounced around I trucks and no worries. I mainly use it for 3 gun. The 3MOA dot is perfect for the 8 inch plates out to 150m or so while If I change the reticule to dot with circle its great for the run and gun stages. Also works well on rabbits, possums etc when shooting with a spotlight from a vehicle, (this is perfectly legal here).
Buy One for the money I think they are good value. They aren't in the same legue as Aimpoint etc but were never ment to be. If they were they would cost more.

I need to clarify my statement earlier about the 60% failure rate of the Aimpoint in training. We were training in some freakin cold weather and fogging will be alot faster and prevelant in cold weather. Here in Iraq, I haven't heard much about any problems with the aimpoints. I don't know if they have Gen I or Gen II.

I will get a Tacpoint in the near future and test it over here. Hey that's why they pay me the big bucks.

Got a call next day while my friend was fishing all the shot glasses, bottles and misc. items out of his pool.  and he found the two sights still sitting at the deep end of the pool(10ft).  I figure that was about 14 hours in the pool.  I ask him to fish it out and check the sights.

Aimpoint was still on, EOTech had activiated the auto shut off but turned on without a problem.  no condensation, batteries were dry and the sight kept zero on my next range day.
