55 last August. Fired first Black Rifle (M16A1)in March 1970 while in BCT at Ft Lewis, WA. Have a DPMS A2 and son has an Oly A2.

Have found it most interesting that the Mattel Marvel has become the longest-used USGI rifle, and that civilian-generated variants and accessories have been widely adopted by the military. Quite a change from the circumstances which saw its difficult and lengthy acceptance back in the 60's.

A tribute to the genius of Gene Stoner, and to a free society, where changes flow from the bottom up.

I'm 54 and I am partial to the pre-ban Colts. In part because they remind me of the one I was issued in RSVN and partly just because the liberals say I shouldn't have them.

PS: My wife was born the same year I was and has one too!

Well, I am 60, Viet Vet too, but we didn't get M16s in the Navy.  We stood security watches with M1 carbines and Thompson SMGs.

My first auto rifle was an HK91, then later a Mini-14, but the sweetest of them all is that A2 Bushmaster 20" full stock and carry handle.  It is more fun to shoot than any of the others, and very accurate with iron sights and my old eyes.

Here's my entry into the old fart black rifle poll.  51 years old.

First exposure at Lackland AFB July 1972.  Still remember the operating spring clanging in the earmuffs.

First owned an SP-1 in 1979, after being pissed about the accuracy with either of the mini-14s I had.  Sold it during the MG building frenzy in 1986, couldn't afford to keep it after the conversion [:|].  Got another SP-1 in 1987 for $250 [:P].  Picked up a Colt pre-ban just before the shoe fell in 1994.

Ah, the good ol' days.

Just turned 51. Shot my first black rifle at Fort Leonard Wood some 30 years ago. When I first handled it I though " What a piece of shit!" being used to bolt actions and Winchester 94's in the Michigan deer woods. Somehow the drill sergeant picked me as a "demostrator" on the fire range. I was nervous as hell but dropped every popup target on that range. My proudest moment in basic training and fell in love with the little rifle. Twenty six years in the National Guard with a M16A1 I was the last one to turn in my triangle handguards for the round ones. I think the Hbar models are too heavy,at least for an old fart like me. I like the SP1 Car-15 the best.

65 yrs. young here...retired and returned to shooting two years ago after 43 years of not shooting. Everything from .22 caliber to .480 Ruger in pistols...like the 1911 .45 Kimber best, a Classic Royal and Ultra Carry II(CCW); also shotgun (12 gauge) for trap and hunting; and the AR-15 rifle for CMP and fun (Ciener .22 Conversion kit).

Turn 53 on May 11 and own half a dozen AR's and a 16.  Got my Full auto in 1982 and my first AR in 1986. Kind of a backward progression into the black rifle world but what the heck.

I have three 6X45's that I shoot.  The wife has one of them made up with a Shilen SSBR barrel.

Guess I'll pick up a few more over the next year or two. I have an itch to shoot some NM stuff so........

I turned 50 last nov. Built my first AR this spring. Finally finished it yesterday. Lower machining was a chore. It fires great on .233 or with my Ciener .22 conversion kit. Love it. Although I would like to have a couple 30round mags for the Ciener conversion but can't find any. Anyone know of any for sale??

50, hell no... but I celebrated the 20th anniversary of my 30th birthday last February.[;)]

Fired my 1st M16 during Air Force basic in '71. I fell in love with it and knew I had to have one. Just after getting out of the AF in '81, I bought an Armi Jaeger AP-74 (a decent .22lr copy of an AR-15) because I was too poor to buy the real McCoy. I now own an RR M16, a SP1 Carbine, 6520 Gov. Carbine, 6430 9mm Carbine, and a 6700 Competition HBAR. (Oh ya... I  still have the AP-74.) I recently sold a SP1 Carbine, 6601 HBAR, and a postban Oly.
