Interesting.
However, for a more practical unusual upper would be a precharged pnumatic air rifle in both a spacegun and A2 configurations. These would be useful for highpower competitors to practice in their basements. They could still use the same lower so they have exactly the same trigger stock and grip that they normally use. Make them in caliber .177. One might have to modify the buffer tube for the air tank, however, unless one could figure out how to do one parallel to the barrel. |

You know, I have been waiting to get a muzzleloader for some time. Here in Maine you can only take one deer unless you get an extra doe permit, so if I bag a deer with my 50Beo, I won't get the chance to hunt with the muzzleloader. But DAMN that is cool!! I had checked out Tromix's back a while ago and thought it a fun upper conversion. Definitely a good way to progress BRD!!! I hope you will have it at SHOT for us to check out!!
We will definitely have it at shot show. See you there! |
Me neither, but I like it! |

Check into the T/C Encore BP rifles. I'm pretty sure the receivers are still considered "firearms", as they designed as a modern firearm. This should fall into the same category... But I had the same thought. |
Hmmmm...
I'd like to see a BP AR set up that ejects and re-primes automatically. Just pour powder in barrel, wadding, seat bullet and fire, repeat. Automatic priming black powder AR-15. |
It is easy enough to get the empty to cycle out by adding a short gas tube. The problem is someone out there will load a 2nd primed casing into the mag and hurt themselves with a ND while loading the 2nd round. At this point, we only plan to offer manual ejection. |

makes perfect sense |

i was going to buy a black powder gun anyway to extend my deer season......looks like i won't need to shop around now......
I didn't do any testing with the first sample. We will have some coming back from plating next week. I am going to give it a try with a 553 EOTech and will post the results. |

OMG, I just busted out laughing! I think thats the funniest coment I've read on ARFcom in a while. |
I can't wait to see the threads this sparks in the maintenance and cleaning section.
I can honestly say I did not expect anyone to make that. Price?
I don't want a primer anywhere near the chamber while I'm stuffing BP and a bullet down the muzzle with my HAND! Single load is plenty good. I'll be watching for one of these. Rob |

Probably need to go Vietnam cleaning rod -style with the ramrod and duct tape it to the forearm. Of course a synthetic ramrod that screws-together with three 8-inch sections (hint, hint) might fit in the butt stock compartment... |
The ramrod actually fits in a sleeve on the sling. Works really really well. You don't notice it with the rifle slung.
The prototype had the triangle handguard cap upside down(see vid) where the gas tube passed through to secure the ramrod. We may go this route but the slings is much much simpler. |
Not for me, but I applaud CMMG for trying something different. I think it's very cool, just not something I'm interested in.
The only thing missing is a bayonet lug - whats more traditional then hunting with a MZ and a knife
I agree: Just needs a lump on the barrel cause black powder = socket bayonet.
Isn't it totally illegal to possess a firearm (the lower) while hunting with black powder? This sounds like a GREAT idea, I was just wondering. |
"hunting with black powder" you mean like with a keg of black powder set next to a deer trail and you're 100 yards off holding a remote detonator?? I believe these game rules/laws are intended for you to be carrying only one firearm at a time, lest you be tempted to use a second one to quickly make up for a missed black powder first shot. The Blackpowder AR Upper+Lower = one firearm. |
Ok is the barrel chrome lined this would be a HUGE plus with BP. Oh and why not just have the ramrod go on top of the barrel to replace the gas tube?
All barrel components will be treated for corrosion protection. The end result is a barrel with better durabilty than chrome lining. |
So you actually designed it with Black Powder in mind not substitutes?
I really don’t like the whole idea or anything about it. But I do have one thing to say, if you can make it cheaper than a black powder rifle or the Knight multi-caliber rifle (Or what ever it is.) and still maintain quality and good accuracy. It might be a good way to get people with an AR to buy your set up instead of any other.
Great idea! When might we expect to see this available, barring any unforeseen circumstances? I, for one, would like to see the ramrod below the barrel. The sling is not necessary for the rifle to fire, but the ramrod is so I'd like to keep the ramrod on the rifle itself. Will this have a removable breech plug?
An AR crossbow wouldn't be legal to use during bow season though. At least not if the game warden wanted to pick nits. However I'd still want one.
I'd take one - it's silly but it's one of those gotta haves.
I guess the safe load will be three pellets? |
Most MZ will tell you not to exceed 150gr (3 pellets) I'm sure their is a safety rating but a lot of cheaper MZ are unsafe at 150gr and many people have been hurt because of cheap barrels, and different safety rating systems. This mostly affects cheaper brands like Traditions, CVA ect. |
I might use Pyrodex but I'd probably use pellets since it's one less thing to spill/mess up. My understanding (from the Dixie Gun Works catalog) is that the method of proof testing a muzzleloader is to use a double load - though it's been a few years since I've read the catalog. Based on that I figured the intended max load is three pellets.
Is this the jump the shark moment for the AR15? Is this the cultural point where in the future we all look back and think "it was all down hill from there"?
Meh...not my thing. But i can see the novelty and the nifty factor here. I do tend to agree with the concerns about the legality of the rifle. You can purchase a blackpowder rifle when you can't purchase a lot of other types of gun. I have a felon friend that made the joke long ago. Wouldn't this allow him or people like him to buy a blackrifle AR toss the upper and have any upper shipped to their door (uppers aren't guns afterall) and then have a fully functional assault rifle (to the Kommistanic minds) Dunno...but i certainly hope it's not all down hill from here.
There is no legal issue. The receiver is the firearm. Look at T/C Encore or H&R muzzleloaders. You go through the same process to buy either as you would if they were equipped with a centerfire barrel.

I'm certainly interested. I'd love to be able to use my AR for Deer hunting. And even with the primed brass functioning as a primer carrier it's legal here.
