I got all the materials today and was messing around with the 1.5" heavyweight webbing and a buckle adjuster. How do you keep the webbing from sliding out? I noticed at the right angle, the webbing will comeout if you tug on it and this is the heavyweight stuff. I also bought lightweight webbing for making my own MOLLE straps (looks like the same crap Jansport and other backpack makers use for straps) and the heavyweight stuff is more stubborn to take a certain shape. |
Got one built with material from REI. I was surprised at how good it turned out. Unfortunately, they only had the lightweight nylon and it does slide apart easily. I may need to get some heavyweight polypropylene which may hold better to the slides. Or maybe I can borrow my wife's sewing machine  Thanks ggllggll, this is the best DIY project I've done so far. Cheap, simple and very useful.

I'm glad you two like the slings. I actually have never had a probelem with the slings pulling out, maybe I'm lucky or the ACE webbing is different somehow. Anyway, I would suggest sewing the straps to make the connections solid, or pinning them in place some way, safety pin? Take care! Matt |
Use an Epoxy that says " do not use on Polypropholine (SPelling?) Plastics " That will definatly weld it together. They usually have warnings like that in case it melts the plastic, in this case, exactly what you want it to do.

One of the recent photos posted showed where I had a misthreaded slide. After I reversed that and doubled back on the sling to swivel slide pieces (1" webbing and slides), I feel very confident in the holding ability. Mine is put together with the lighter weight webbing, but is solid now. I was also considering the heavier webbing until now. What's the name of a photo hosting site? I'll take a few picks and put them up. |

Update: I made some slight changes to Matt's formula so the sling works better for me. Again, I'm not a big guy but I'm TALL, I use heavy and long rifles, and my arms are long. Matt called for: 7.5' of 1.5" wide heavyweight polypro webbing 7" piece of 1.5" heavyweight polypro webbing Two 15" pieces of 1" wide heavyweight polypro webbing. What I found to work better: 8' of 1.5" wide heavyweight polypro webbing 7" piece of 1.5" heavyweight polypro webbing, just weld the ends shut Two 12" pieces of 1" wide heavyweight polypro webbing. Also, the buckles should be double-adjust 1.5" wide nylon buckles. One single adjust buckle WOULD work but the one end that slides on the webbing would be restrictive. The double adjust buckle works better. Even with the stock sling mounts, my rifles can go into back-pack carry mode quite easily with the 8' long 1.5" wide webbing. The 7.5' long webbing was just too short for me. I adjusted it to no avail, but kept it since I could use it if I was wearing a shirt it wouldn't hurt as much trying to slide in. Thanks Matt!!!!! |

I made two, with some changes. I doubled most of the strap ends back and sewed them together so they would be more secure. I also used 1.5" webbing rather than 1" on the connectors. To do this I tacked down the edges of the 1.5" pieces so that they would be narrower. This got rid of the slightly annoying "slide" that would sometimes happen with the 1" pieces going through the 1.5" slide locks. I also used a little more length in the main strap so it would all fit over the MOLLE/IBA vests. One of these I sent to my bro in Bagdhad. Just got some pics back from him using it, and he likes his as much as I like mine. Now I just need to get some heavier strap material, which is the only suggestion he had. Well this post is a few months old. The one that was in GD was tacked for about a month..however last week I think it fell off the edge of the world, or whatever happens to dying posts. Shame too because it had like 200 replies! Ohwell. I'm glad you like the topic though! Matt

I just printed it out in anticipation of it disappearing into archive limbo eventually! That and once I get done working i will be making a quick stop at ACE hardware to see if they have the goodies I need!

Let me get home and I'll try to post what I've got. One has him a few yards off, but you wouldn't know its the sling without being told. Another has him closer, and you can see one of the 1.5" slidelocks sticking out. I'm at work, so I don't have them here. Of course, we might have to see Unfrozen Caveman Pic Poster until I figure how to post them with magic box on desk. |

Hey thanks for the great instructions! I'm not a tall guy (only 5' 10") but I think maybe the dimensions are a tad too small (or I didn't assemble it quite right!) because I nearly dislocated my shoulder attempting the bakcpack carry  . Oh and I screwed up when I ordered from strapworks. I accidentally got the single adjust buckles instead of the dual adjust, so I had to sew part of the sling together to quit worrying about it falling apart! Doh! Works great for side carry though, and if I just slide the sling farther over and the gun farther back it comes very close to a sing strap back carry, which is fine too. Overall, one of the best contributions I've seen on this site, ranking up there with OP's " " of truth and the BUIS faq! |
Yes, if you read my modified list of parts, you will see that I increased the length of the 1.5" webbing just a tad. However, if you go TOO long (as I experimented) you will easily do the backpack carry, but the other modes will allow the rifle to sit near your knees, rendering the patrol-carry quite useless, and the drop mode will result in long rifles (like my 24") to hit the ground. |

I ordered all the goods from Strapworks for $11.15 last Thursday, assembled it after lunch today. This thread definitely deserves another bump. |

I like to think of myself as mechanically inclined but I've never owned or used a 3 point sling. Can someone show me how to put the damn thing over my shoulder correctly? Im sitting here looking soooooo stupid trying to figrue it out and I know someone here can show me the light. Which hole do I put over my shoulder and which gets attached to the rifle? Joe |
