Here is a question for anyone who wants to try and answer it... What the hell is the Colt 649? According to The Black Rifle, it is the GAU-5/A, however, is the 649 any different from the 610? The Black Rifle also says the 649 has a 14" OAL barrel, which would mean it has an XM177E2 moderator on it. Most people who have been studying the XM177 series, knows the XM177/XM177E1 transitioned between a 3.5" and 4.5" moderator, which was then consequently used on the XM177E2. Would this mean the earlier variant of the GAU-5/A with the XM177/XM177E1 moderator was considered the 610 and the later variant with the XM177E2 moderator was considered the 649? Sammy |

Photo 231 on page 233 in The Black Rifle is another one of those captions that appears to be in error. The 610 is the GAU-5/A. 10" barrel. Same as the Army's XM177E1, except without forward assist. Either the 630 or the 649 were the GAU-5/A/A. The 630 and 649 seem to be identical. They have a 11.5" barrel. Same as the Army's XM177E2, except without forward assist. |

Thank you pettifogger. I am almost positive the Colt 630 was the GAU-5/A/A. I am almost inclined to believe the 649 doesn't exist and/or is a model that is completely different than we know. Just to let you know, I have had another source that believes the 649 is a GAU-5/P (not GUU-5/P) and is a Colt 653 without the forward assist. However, this information conflicts with the 654, unless the 649 is the US version while the 654 is the export version. Sammy

Those offside safety markings are a comparatively new deal. I don't remember seeing them much before Operation Desert Storm-- late '80s, early '90s. Sure are handy, though. Anyone know the history there? Sandstrom 9A is one of a series of solid-film-lube paints that were used for finishing and repair purposes. Several of the Milspec Sandstrom products were used; some bake on, others (mostly used for magazine refurbishment) are room-temp agents. Medium-grey GunKote is the right color and a hell of a lot more durable. |
