Question for those using MRPs

Im going to be picking up one of these soon, and was wondering a few things.

1. Do the 2 screws that hold the barrel in need to be tightened on a regular basis and how often. I just want to be sure im doing the right things when i get it. Im thinking that the more you shoot it, the more these might loosen ? Dont know, havent had any chances to see one up close.

Mine has 7500+ rds through it with no loosening of the bolts. I have heard others suggest you torque them when you first receive your MRP to make sure they at at the proper tightness.

Thanks NickDrak, Got any recommendations for a small torque stick that i can keep with my cleaning kit ?

I have about 4000 rounds through mine and have never had the bolts come loose. I do go between two different barrels, but during one extended range sesion I went through about 1700 rounds in 18 hours and the only thing I did to the rifle was clean it and lightly lube it. Afterwards when I went to change the barrel, the bolts were as tight as they were when I started.

As far as torque wrenches go, I like this one. Not the smallest, but it is small enough to fit in my range bag and it works good.

Thanks Michealj, I dont know why im feeling like they would come loose, but like i said, ive only seen pictures of the MRP, then my brain starts analyzing the possibilities. Glad to hear so far that its not an issue.

Edit : Thanks for the link to the torque wrench :)

I have a LMT MRP CQB coming in a few days. What tools do I need to swap barells and check the torque on the bolts?
I saw some high speed T-wrench awhile back does anybody have any direct links or info?
What is the torque specs? 180lb?
Thanks in advance

Here is the wrench that I am probably going to get:  LINK

I think that the LMT instructions say 140 Inch/Lbs, but I may be wrong.

That is the exact wrench I have and it works perfectly and quickly for barrel changes.
They are kind of expensive, however after using it a couple dozen times I had it checked and it was exactly on 140 inlbs.
I had talked to the manufacturer regarding calibration and they said considering the level of use it would see it was a non-issue and figured re-calibration would probably never be needed and only advised checking it periodically.

Thanks NickDrak, that does look nice and compact. I get snapon tools through work so im gonna also check and see if they have anything. T-Handle design looks like something i want to pursue. Thanks for the link and the info.

I have used my Seekonk T-handled torque wrench quite a bit on my MRP upper (both pictured above) as I have 3 different barrels (thanks to WES at MSTN) and it's much preferred over a regular torque wrench.
My regular ones require you to set them to the lowest setting when not in use to maintain calibration, and aren't T-handles which are much faster in actual use since you can just "spin" the bolt out.  But the real advantage is since you can't really use it for anything else it won't end up in your toolbox, or the back of the truck, ot at a friend's house, etc.

Now the advantages of quickly changing the barrel in the field are limited by the types of barrel setups you have.  Even though all three of my barrels re-install to within less than 1/2 MOA of their previous zero, they all have very different POI with a spread of about 10" at 100 yards.  Whether this is due to the fact that they all have different muzzle devices I can't say but is likely that it at least contributes to the differences(18"SS/MSTN QC brake, 16"SS/Vortex, 14.5"CL/Phantom 5C1).

So changing to another pre-zeroed optic, or changing your optic's zero to the zero of the newly installed barrel (which is repeatable), or, preferably, re-zeroing the weapon is required.
I have successfully in the past memorized the difference in clicks on my TA31f of the 18"SS vs the 14.5"CL barrel, and could change the barrel and the sights zero in just a couple of minutes and it would be essentially perfectly zeroed.

But, since I got the super accurate 16"SS barrel from WES at MSTN, I have just left it installed as the best compromise as it's now a dedicated day/night weapon with Aimpoint M2, 3X magnifier or PVS-14, IWAL 2 IR laser.

First of all it was a 1st gen CMMG  1:7 , CL barrel, iknow it says DPMS , but it was specifically made for CMMG by DPMS at the time. I told you at the time before ya bought it , ask Jeff @ CMMG  and the Knights RAS II, complete set of knights rail covers , aimpoint comp m2 with double battery holder, killflash, big latch ,A2 flash hider, VFG,and a complete BCG. Sheeuuut I should have sold it to ya for more than what i asked for it. Fuck i'll buy it back from ya for what i sold it to ya for.... try to do ya favor and look at this shit. and i sold it to ya for $700.00. I think , I'm kicking your ass the next time i see ya...
see this link www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=281167

but back on topic, the hefty mike rock barrell and the mrp withstood a KAboom. Testament to the quality and durability of the MRP. Blew the bottom of the mag out. mag catch and the bolt face split in two.
There is no visible bulge in the barrel but, replaced it anyways along with the bolt, mag catch and firing pin. So far i have shot approx 1k since the Kaboom on the MRP.
Runs just beatifully as before. no signs of any cracks ,stress fractures etc.

Meat you're very generous when selling your equipment, TB probably hasn't added up all the cost of things when new.  Just the M2 itself would cost around $400 without a mount, so TB got a great deal whether he knows it or not.  I buy and sell my stuff all the time, I feel your pain.
BTW the LMT enhanced bolt you sold me for $50 is working very well, after I swapped out the extractor pin

This is my LMT MPR CQB that I purchased last March.  It does have the LMT Enhanced Bolt and Bolt Carrier that works great!  This LMT upper has about 3,750 rounds through it, in both semi and full automatic fire, without any, zero, nada, malfunctions!

I am planning to buy a second LMT MRP soon.  Sorry for the mediocre quality of the pictures, but I rather buy a new LMT MPR upper receiver; one does have to set priorities in life!

I believe you need to mount your Matech BUIS on the last rail for the elevation adjustment to work as designed

Hey Duffy:

What the Freak!  You are right; the Matech rear sight is not in the correct position (the last rail)!  What!  Me read the installation instructions, hell; I don’t need any stinking instructions!!!!

I am a very dumb anserine!  Now I have to go back to the range and confirm the sight’s zero; hey it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it!

But, thank you for pointing that defect out to me!  I have corrected the Matech Rear Sight issue.  I have noticed in these pictures that the LMT upper receiver, when the light hits just right, that it has that purple colored shading to it.  I have noticed that this purple colored shading has been an issue on some other postings on this websites.  It’s funny, because in natural light, it appears that the upper and lower receivers’ colors match perfectly.  Go figure!

Some photos of the correctly installed (da, I think) Matech Rear Sight.  If anybody sees anything else wrong, please do let me know.  Notice the purple shading on the upper receiver in some pictures and see how the purple colored shading is missing in the other pictures.

I'm not a big fan of the Matech BUIS, I got one in 2003, promptly overtorqued the screw and snapped it in half  Went to the local hardware store and got 4 extra machine screws, broke 2 more lol.
I believe we can do better than the Matech.  When it was first posted here in 2003, a few folks in the know had pointed out its shortcomings.  I just dislike it because it takes up more rails and is pretty clunky, compared to the simple and elegant KAC 300M, and the then-favorite, ARMS #40, all better made and designed than the Matech.  Once Troy BattleSights hit the scene, the Matech looks even worse.

The only reason I still have mine is because I don't use it, since I broke the screw it came with, can't very well sell it

Hi Wes, Some Questions for you.

I have noticed on the pictures of the LMT MRPs that you just posted (above on this thread) that the gas block is clearly visible in front of the rails (not covered by the rails).  On my LMT MPR, the gas block is under the rails (refer to the picture below.) Why is this?  My LMT MPR is the CQB (carbine) version with a 14.5-inch barrel.

Also, I have read elsewhere on this website that LMT is coming out with a gas-piston version of their MPR Upper Receivers.  Do you have any information on this?

Thanks Wes…

6/8/2006 11:56:27 PM EDT
[#21]
The 14.5" and 10.5" barrels have carbine length gas systems. All of the rest (16" & 18") have mid length gas systems. the CQB MRP has a mid-length rail so the 14.5" & 10.5" barrels gasblock will be covered and the 16" & 18" barrels gasblock will not be covered on the CQB MRP's.

ETA: The MRP that Wes posted above with the Aimpoint is a CQB with a 16" barrel.

Hi NickDrak:

Thank you for the information concerning the LMT MRP upper receivers rails; I do understand now.  With the LMT MRP CQB upper receiver rails length, no matter what barrel length you would install, that barrels’ gas tube will be protected by the rails.

I just received my MRP CQB the other day and when I called to get the tracking number from LMT, I asked that same question.  She told me that they were going to wait and see how well the 6.8 does with the 16inch barrel and if it goes well, other barrel lengths may follow after the first of the year.

"Lewis Machine and Tool MRP .223" by Mike Detty in Special Weapons for Military and Police, Issue #44

I quote the article:

"One of the MRP's biggest-selling features is that the weapon is capable of quick barrel change to meet the needs of a particular mission.  Loosening both of the torx-head screws allows the user to remove the barrel from the receiver.  The desired barrel is then slid into the receiver and the screws tightened again.  This quick-change ability also lends itself to changing calibers.  The 5.56x45mm, 5.45x39mm, 6.8x43mm, 7.62x39mm, and .204 Ruger are all supported with this system.  Keep in mind the bolt would need to be changed if the casehead diameter is different."

Has anyone seen barrels for the MRP that are chambered in 5.45, 7.62x39, or .204?  I've been dying to get a 6.8 barrel for well over a year!  I guess if you work for a gun magazine you get that extra super secret squirrel info that isn't available to anyone else...

Oh, here's another good one from the article:

"Since I don't have a license to legally possess a short barreled rifle I had to rely on LMT to shoot the 14.5 and 10.5 inch barrels for accuracy and velocity."

You need a license or a tax-stamp?  Come on...

Spooky

ETA - I still want a darn 6.8 barrel!

ETAA - does anyone one besides WES at MSTN own a rifle and carbine length MRP upper with 10.5, 14.5, 16.0, and 18.0 length barrels?  I would love to see a composite picture of  a rifle length upper with each length barrel in it next to one another and the same with a carbine length upper.  I think WES might be the only hope!

I have four LMT MRP upper receivers; each upper has a 14.5-inch (steel-chrome moly) barrel.  For each of these barrels, I can get 1-inch groups at 100-yards with the Federal Gold Medal Match ammunition with the 77-grain Sierra Match King bullet.

Not being a spokes-person for the article’s author, I suspect that the author (or his editor) was assuming that the LMT MPR system could be designed for the 5.56x45mm, 5.45x39mm, 6.8x43mm, 7.62x39mm, and .204 Ruger cartridges.  Like so many gun-print authors, I suspect that he does not own a LMT MRP Upper Receiver / Rifle and is only surmising as to certain facts and capabilities of a firearm.  I learned long ago not to assume that an author of a gun-related article actually knows and understands what he is talking about.  The gun-print industry is very cliquish and being a kiss-ass is a very big asset.

The only caliber that I have ever seen the LMT MRP Upper Receiver chambered for is the 5.56x45mm; however, on the LMT website, the 6.8x43mm is now listed for sale on their on-line product catalog.

The 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, and .204 Ruger calibers probability could be developed by LMT, however LMT has been very show and careful in development of the 6.8X43mm caliber interchangeable barrels and the associated Bolt Carrier Groups and magazines.

I suspect that LMT will not develop 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, and .204 Ruger caliber barrels.  The LMT MRP Upper Receivers are very expensive and are owned only by the most sophisticated AR-15 type firearm owners and the development of 7.62x39mm and .204 Ruger barrels and associated Bolt Carrier Groups and magazines will not be cost effective v. return on investment (sales).

THE REASON I THINK MRP'S SHOOT AS WELL AS THEY DO IS DUE TO THE MRP CHASSIS RIGIDITY, THE RECEIVER IS SIMPLY STIFFER THAN A CONVENTIONAL UPPER/FOREND ARRANGEMENT. A GIVEN BARREL WILL SHOOT BETTER IF MORE RIGIDLY SUPPORTED.

THESE THINGS DO NOT SIT HERE VERY LONG. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THEY TYPICALLY HAVE A HOME BEFORE THEY COME IN.

I agree with Wes. I have two CQB MRPs, both 16" SS & C/L barrels in 5.56MM. I recently let someone from Ft Hood give one a test drive after I had switched the SS barrel for the C/L and a NXS for the M2. It was also running Dieter VFG & SF951X light. His comments were: "Shit as light as this feels, it's one accurate carbine without out re-zeroing." He was pinging targets out to 250M+ with ease.

LMT just needs to deliver the 6.8SPC barrels & bolts and I will be happy.

There seems to be two different versions of MRPs.  Some have a large oval cutout above the barrel mounting bolts and others have a smaller oval and a round hole.  Is one version newer or is this random?  Is the round hole for a QC sling mount?

And, what happend to the 1st 40 pages?

I just received my new MRP CQB this June direct from LMT and it is the "two hole" version.  From what I understand, the new versions are the two hole, which is a forward sling mount and it also has a new bushing or some type of device inside of the upper receiver itself to aid in the alignment of the barrels and gas tube.  At least that is what LMT tolt me when I called them and asked if they have made any updates on the MRP recently.

I have no idea about the first 40 pages, it's probably archived and only for paying members.

My new LMT MRP with both 10.5 and 16 inch barrels with Vortex flash hiders.

The lower is also an LMT, a Defender 2000 with the following:

-Geissele LEO two stage with KNS pins
-Magpul Trigger guard
-Tactical Link X180 sling mount (I also use their single point sling that is not pictured)
-SBR engraving by Tom Sawyer
-Lower work done by Denny at Global Tactical, who I highly recommend!

Also in use is a Surefire 962 series and an EOTech 511 with larue mount.  BUIS are Troy front and rear folding.

Enjoy!
