| Ok, I'm looking at multiple options here, but here's the basics. For the mk12 mod1 I was looking at a MSTN build, Adco build or a GlobalTactical build consisting of LaRue upper, SPR profile barrel, LaRue 12" guard, vortex flash hider (no cans in my future). For the Recce, basically the same build but with the 16" recce length barrel and a 9" LaRue. I guess what my main question is what is the performance difference in terms of distance and accuracy between the two. Either one is gonig on a Spike's Tactical lower. |

| OK so I have a question that is not exactly SPR related but close. I am building a rifle to perform the same mission. comparing a 16, to a 20 inch 1/:8 what are the real range and accuracy expectations of a 16 inch 1:8 compared to a 20" using 75 or 77 grain ammo? |
You need to define your mission. All will make hits beyond 400yds, but all do no more than poke .22 holes at those distances... |

Well, after seeing this outstanding thread, I got bit by the Mk. 12 Mod. 1 bug and decided I would build one. I started an excel spreadsheet over the weekend listing all the parts I will need. I added columns for different suppliers and then listed the cost of each part at each supplier. This sucker is going to be expensive. I was initially going to make it as close to .mil as possible but have backed down from that. Instead of Colt or Armalite receiver components (as mentioned in Black Rifle II and Wikipedia) I am using a Rock River upper and lower. I priced the KAC two stage triggers also ($300.00+) and am contemplating using a RRA instead. Other than those two issues, I intend to keep with the other specifications. I ordered the A4 upper, stripped lower, lower parts kit with ERGO grip and A2 stock. today. Due to the high cost of each part (KAC rail, KAC buis, PRI brake, etc.) this will take several months to put together unfortunately. Everyones great pictures here sure are an inspiration though. Hopefully mine will turn out as good as the others here. As some motivation, I picked up a MK. 12 Mod 0/Mod 1 TM off of Ebay over the weekend for $25.00. I'm anxious to get it in hand. Hope to see some pics of other MK. 12's here soon. |
Welcome to this obsession, you have a decent plan, and i'm sure it will turn out great. I wore out my mouse looking at these pages over and over,until i finally had to build one, the hardest thing i had to justify in my mind was the Kac trigger and pay over a grand for a scope, but, what can i say, except thats what home equitys are for.. ( Maybe they should change the name to AR equity,,,,,,,, |
| If you don'tmind the wait just take your time and stalk eBay and EE. For my MK12 I was able to score a NIB Leupold Mark 4 MR/T M3 Mil Dot for $600 and a set of KAC BUIS for $210. When I made up my mind to buy/build a MK12...I decided not to jump right in and buy everything blowing a ton of cash. I'd wait as long as it took to get everything I needed at a price that felt like a deal. Not even a weel later I found the SR-15 Match Rifle I wanted...week later the scope...week later the sights. I was a happy camper. The only piece of the puzzle that took awhile was my scope mount. I gave in three months into the wait and bought it straight form Larue. You just need to check EE, eBay, Guns America, Sturm etc. a bunch of times a day to make sure you can jump on any deals that come up. |
Glad to hear that i'm not alone with this obsession!  I just got the last part (gas buster) to my mod 0 clone, now it is complete (buster not in these pics yet)! But like many others in this thread, i used "wrong" upper, lower and trigger. Colt LE's are not easy to get in here.   ...currently building the next one, mod 1! This is endless...

I built mine with a Douglas that was profiled by Compass Lake, it was probably faster getting the Douglas than waiting 10 weeks for the Noveske, unless you find someone who has it in stock. I got mine from Jason at Jtac, he will help you with all your needs. To answer your question, yes you can build one from the names you mention, in my case i wanted to use the components that were called for, unless they were unavailable, or the part was better than called for IMHO........ |
What manufacturer of upper and lower are you using? Just curious. I haven't drank the kool-aid yet.

| Hey Wes...when is the MSTN site going to be back up on its feet? You guys should add more pics of the custom rigs you build to the site. I always enjoyed checking them out and would dig seeing some new ones. Also...do you guys know when/if you will be getting the rifle length URX rails. I'd love to have a KAC MK12 rig with one of those. |

Check your resources I don't think a magpul trigger guard or a Zombie Killer lower is correct for a MOD 0 clone. But other than that it looks good.

Mod 0 ish...Getting an upper from steve at Adco soon (hopefully within the next week or so). Then, it's back to saving for a scope. Most of y'all are using the leuopold mk 4 3-9 right? How much is costing yall? the cheapest that i can find the one with the illum. reticle is like 8 or 9 hundred...

I picked up a Mk 4 3-9 M/RT, illuminated duplex reticle, off of one of the boards for $700, which included a set of low ARMS rings and BC caps. Yes it was used, but in great shape, so I figured that was a good deal. |

Just posted these photos in another thread. I forgot that I had them. I figured I had to post them in this thread. I took these pictures back in 2004. I didn't know what I was looking at then. But, after looking at this Mk. 12 thread, I am a little wiser. This MK. 12 Mod 0 SPR rifle was built on a Hydromatic M16A1 lower. This was in 2004 during OIF I/II. It was the property of an ODA that operated out of Al-Kut, Iraq.    The operator told me that the distance record in his ODA at the time of the photo was a 700 meter head shot by another team member. He had made several at 500 to 600 meters. He said you could make torso shots all day long at 900 meters. He wouldn't discuss his ammo any but I am betting he was using the Black Hills 77 grain ammo. The rifle was using standard issue mags. |
