A Faxon pencil barrel is about $270. ADCO will turn down a barrel for $120. If I were in your shoes, I would start by having my existing barrel turned down. If that didn't solve the problem, I would go with a lighter BCG and an adjustable gas block. Next, would be a lighter handguard and stock. You might solve your problem with $120, so that's where I would start.

ETA: I see where you just want to use the .308 AR for deer hunting. Just use the bolt gun, and call it a day.

ADCO will turn down a bbl, Paladin Machining of SC will make a bbl from a blank & a bbl extension - who will nitride a bbl & extension?

I ventured into this not too long ago. Carbon fiber barrel, titanium BCG, titanium parts (they add up to save weight), lightweight handguard. The one I built was well balanced, but the money involved didn't really make it a game changer necessarily.

@Demphna2:
Where are you getting a carbon fiber LR308 barrel and how much are they?

Barrel and BCG.  Get a lightweight for each, run adjustable gas, enjoy.

This really is much of the weight in a LR308
The bolt carrier can be lightened but only to lose about 4oz-5oz max I would guess.
You'd have to go with titanium I'm guessing

Partially lightened DPMS

The problem with LR308 barrel and "lightening" is you can't remove any weight at the barrel extension area. This area is HEAVY.
When you compare that to and FAL you realize why their barrels are so much lighter.

Yes, but a FAL doesn't have a bbl extension - it screws into a receiver.  Compare the FAL bbl and piston to an AR gas tube and bbl w/o the bbl extension.

I would be careful of BSF Carbon Fiber barrels. They are light but have a lot of QC problems. Some catastrophic.

You're right.
The FAL rcvr prob weighs 2-3 times as much as LR308 upper.

Proof Research. If you get a good deal, you can get into one for a little over 700 bucks. They are damn nice.

10.6 lbs with a full magazine.

I'll admit I havent carried it across Europe but it doesn't seem that heavy.

Who makes that handguard?
It's Brownells retro "Portuguese" AR10 handguard. You have to change out the triangular nose cap for a round one if the rifle doesn't have one already.

By the time you are done reprofiling or replacing the barrel, shaving lightening cuts into the receivers, messing with the bolt carrier (a significant portion of the weight), and everything else, you're into new rifle money.

At that point, maybe consider getting a POF Revolution DI or Rogue.

https://cdn.athlonoutdoors.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2020/01/POF-Rogue.jpg

You could also build or buy a 2A Armament Xanthos XLR.

https://cdn3.volusion.com/aecne.wevxc/v/vspfiles/photos/2A-XRC20SC15CAM-2-2.jpg

Or you can go to town on the DPMS with an end mill, get a Faxon pencil barrel, Titanium parts, lo-mass BCG, adjustable gas, increased spring weight, carbon fiber handguard, skeleton stock, etc.

It's only money...

Ooohhh. I had no idea those POF rifles existed.

What manufacturer produces that one? Is it a homebrew rifle or a modded commercial one? Looks very good.

It's just a PSA. I swapped out the 18" barrel with a 16" Bushmaster barrel after I had John Thomas change out the triangular handguard cap for a round one.
