[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Battery free, budget reflex sight (Page 5 of 7)

I was just thinking what would make that perfect is if:
1) Didn't have the giant carry handle base plus adapter. 2) No need for tritium either, a nice big fiber optic should be plenty of illumination 3) More glass to make it easier to see mounted on a pistol 4) dot or circle/dot reticle 5) sturdy as hell 6) 50-100 dollar total price One of my main gripes with the cheap optics is battery life. I'd love something that worked more or less like a daytime-only aimpoint, and was less than 100 bucks. And I'm almost certain that someone used to manufacture these things back in the 50s or 60s. Dunno why they would have stopped. |

Well, here is the final product that I have came up with. Let me know what you guys think, it works better than I anticipated. It is rock solid and no modifications to my sight were necessary. http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww62/phousley/IMG_1504.jpg http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww62/phousley/IMG_1503.jpg http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww62/phousley/IMG_1508.jpg The green reflection above the reticle is not visible when looking through the sight, for some reason with my camera angle it was showing up... It looks outstanding. How did you fasten that new aluminum piece to that mount? |
| Thanks for the positive replies guys. I attached my block to the base by drilling and tapping the aluminum block and drilled and countersunk a matching hole in the base and inserted a screw. I would be more than happy to make a few and sell them to anyone who is interested. There is a decent amount of work involved so I am not sure what price point to set them at (maybe around the $40 mark with the fiber optic). Also, I would probably supply them with some super double sided tape to mount to the base as I would not have your base to drill and countersink. I actually think the double sided tape could hold more evenly than the screw anyway and with zero permanent modifications to your base. I could do whatever is desired though. |

http://www.ds-solutions.co.uk/ He had a bunch in stock, but he pulled them from his site because the tritium was burnt out. You can try and email him to see if he has any available. I did, they are. They are working on replacing the tritium elements, but it isn't going very well - see earlier in this thread. He will sell them as daytime only sights, but you need to get in touch with him and ask. |

Here's a question: what would be the effect of mounting a tritium capsule in the block at the end of the rod? The current batch of sights has the tritium elements burned out, and since replacing them is a bitch, I'm thinking one could just be buried in the block at the end of the rod. |
| Given the current supply issues I sent an email to the original manufacturer and apparently these are current production items. They wouldn't quote me as a private citizen but it does bring up the possibility of getting a batch of them made say without the glass light window - just an open hole for the light guide. |

1.) How bright is the reticle in sunlight with just the replaced tritium vials (washout like the Trijicon Reflex) and no external fiber optic augmentation
2.) Where could I purchase tritium vials, and would it be wise to have a lead-lined case to store them in the home? |

In the original configuration the tritium vial only illuminates the night reticle, which is different than the ring you see during the day. Look through the rest of the thread - lots of pics and explanations of its function and some of the issues. |

The current batch of sights has the tritium elements burned out, and since replacing them is a bitch, I'm thinking one could just be buried in the block at the end of the rod. I have thought about trying that. It would be really easy to do but I really doubt it would be effective. The unfortunate nature of this sight is its inability to work in lower light scenarios on light targets, both in its original configuration (with the tritium burnt out) and with the fiber optic rod. With the fiber optic rod attached the sight performs well in twilight conditions out doors but there is little illumination in my living room with a lamp on. I would think the tritium would help but I highly doubt it would be enough to illuminate the reticle for lighter targets. If I can get my hands on some tritium vials I'll give it a shot. |

Sweet! Now all we need to do is source the sight. (Crossing fingers for Primary Arms to come through) |

PM me for more information or email me at [email protected].
Thanks guys. |

Quoted: Sorry guys, they want way way too much money ($200 a month) to sell these blocks on this site. They say I need a dealer account to sell multiples of an item... even though I am just trying to provide a few to give some people a nice option for this sight. I am just a guy who works in law enforcement and is underpaid, who came up with a good idea to help some people obtain a great sight option. I am working with some other distributors to get you guys some options since selling on this website is apparently not an option. If a mod seems to realize that I am not an actual distributor and just someone who is going to make a few blocks to help some people out send me a pm, otherwise look for my fiber optic block to appear on websites that sell this sight. PM me for more information or email me at [email protected]. Thanks guys. Just make a Facebook page. Sell them there. |

Here is the link to my facebook page for the sight block. It is a work in progress, so don't laugh. Reticle Intensifier |

Couple questions that may have been answered but that's a lot to read!
How do these work at night? How do these work with astigmatism? To the guy making the blocks, would it be possible to add a dovetail and toss a tritium front sight on in front of the tube for night shooting, or would it be too weak to light it up? Does anyone have a link to "DS"? |

Island, your setup looks awesome it is almost as if the ring sight/sight block combo was made for that mount, I love it! Maybe if I sell a few more blocks I can get me one of those, that has got to be about the coolest looking optic setup going. Quoted:

It works well outdoors until nearly dark and works indoors as long as there is some overhead lighting. The optic itself is supposed to have a tritium vial inside, but all are burnt out. Personally I have used a sight like it with the tritium functioning and I found it to be less than adequate. On my setup I have the sight and my sight block with a flashlight near the muzzle. The reticle does not illuminate but the lens is so small on these sights I can easily use it as a peep sight (for close quarters obviously no 500 yard shot). As far as working with astigmatism I have no idea, I would assume that it would work the same as any red dot type sight but maybe someone can chime in on this. It would be very easy and very possible to add a tritium vial in front of the fiber optic and if I could get my hands on one I would try it out but I have my doubts if it would be bright enough, but you never know until you try. If anyone has any vials laying around let me know. Here is links to both my facebook page that I am selling the blocks on and also the link to DS: sight block optic All in all I could not be happier with the setup of the ring sight and my sight block, it has been amazing for target shooting. The total price to make the complete setup is no more than a lowish end red dot and the best part is no stupid little watch batteries and no dead optics! If anyone has any questions, please feel free to pm me, message me on the sight block facebook page, or show up at my doorstep! |

An update: I am currently working on some type of battery operated low to no light option for this optic setup. My early attempts are not pretty but are showing very promising signs. I'll keep you guys informed. Any update on this? Getting ready to modify a carry handle to do a semi-permanent install, but would like to see what you have planned first. Also, if you made a one piece .25" riser for the sight with integrated fiber optic/night capability, this should put everything about at perfect height to cowitness with BUIS on a flat top AR. |
| I have been able to successfully illuminate the fiber optic with a battery and LED with very little to no light spill, it looks great in the dark. The issue I am having is with a switch system, I can't seem to find a battery holder or switch that will mount like I would want. To be honest, I have been so busy that I haven't had much time to mess with it. As far as a riser is concerned, that would be pretty easy to make but with the small size of the optic glass I highly doubt co-witnessing would be very possible. Also, IMO, co-witnessing is primarily used for if the battery powered optic fails so you have back up irons. With a sight that does not need batteries, it kind of takes away that possibility of failure, but it would look pretty cool! I will try to see what I can come up with for switch/battery holder options and in the mean time if anyone has any suggestions let me know. |

Just order a couple fiber blocks from Phil. Super nice guy to deal with.
Ring sights found at military surplus shop. I also have numerous tritium vials inbound. I'm going to play with the combinations and see if I can get something that works in all lighting conditions including zero/no light. I'll update post when I get them rigged up for those trying to do the same. |
