[ARCHIVED THREAD] - BEST WEAPON FOR HOME DEFENSE (Page 5 of 8)
So you probably think my SBR Colt with Sure-Fire light and Aimpoint is nuts too? Even though I've spent more time and money learning how to use it than most people on this board have spent on crap to hang on their POS Olys? |
Woot! It only took 9 pages to turn the thread into a "size of my e-penis" contest!
|
Modog- an SBR Colt with a thirty round mag and a flashlight is, well, normal considering what board your'e on. However an AK-47, with 75 rounds of 123grain bullets in a drum with a tac vest that has eight more loaded 30 round magazines, is, well, excessive- as the reason for bring up my uncle, God love him. Course anything more than a .357 magnum is probably excessive for most applications. Creeper |
Ouch those Remington 870P Max are spensive. I built my own for less then 550 dollars. I got lucky and bought an 870 with all the scattergun tech additions including the night sites for 350 at a gun show, added the 618fa and the speedfeedIV-s. |

Think of it this way. You have two principal concerns: "stopping" the intruder(s) and keeping everyone else from being injured. If the second concern is of no concern, then anything whasoever that solves the first concern will suffice. What will solve the first concern? Is there one intruder or many? What is the probability of that number? What is your fear? Are you being naive, irrational, paranoid or realistic? What is your fantasy? What is a likely reality? Is the scenario you so often imagine the one you should be prepared to enact? Now add in that second concern. What if you miss your target? What if the round passes through the body? How likely would you miss? How likely would that round pass through? What is on the other side of that wall? Of the wall beyond that? Is only likelyhood important, or should you consider the unlikely too? Of those methods and choices that would suffice under only the first concern, which of them would suffice also under the second? Everyone has an opinion. But upon what is that opinion based? GL |
| Home invasion robberies are rare. Odds are better that someone will come when they know youre not there. Make sure you dont leave your toys where theyll be found. If a home invasion does happen, it will happen when you dont expect it. You wont have time to grab a long gun, unless its strapped to your chest. Martial arts is the best home defense weapon, hopefully the bad guy brings a gun or a knife so youll have something to kill him with. |

My Bushy A1 shorty with 15 inch barrel plus Bird Cage I feel is Still TO LONG!!! And My 870 12g w/21 inch barrel is still to long!! INSIDE A HOUSE!!! right now a 6906 w/ Night Sights and my AW 637-1 BOTH loaded with +P and my Sure Fire! also my P229 is also ready but no Nite Sight. IF I HAD A AR 15 WITH A 10 BARREL THEN I WOULD USE A AR 15 FOR HOME PROTECTION. A !6INCH BARREL PLUS THE BIRD CAGE IS WAY TO LONG OR EVEN A 14.5 WITH VORTEX/PHANTOM NOW OUTSIDE THE HOUSE IS ANOTHER STORY. GO WITH THE AR OR 870 |
I was JUST going to say that, lol This will show up DEEP into the pages, at the rate that people are posting here, but I can't force myself to read the rest..... sorry |
14.5 HAS WORKED FOR A LOT OF MILITARY AND POLICE IN CLOSE COMBAT. I REALLY DON'T THINK 14.5 OR 16 ARE THAN MUCH OF A DISADVANTAGE INSIDE. ALSO, WHY ARE WE USING ALL CAPS?
|
This may be the best YET.... I always think "oh no", when I see these threads starting... and try to just look away... but it's impossible to not slug through it all like knee deep mud to find the REALLY funny ones.... Great job, GLOCKshooter |
If they get past my dog, that means they killed him. In which case, I'm not gonna shoot 'em I'm gonna capture 'em any take my sweet ass time killin' 'em. |
+1 |

I LAUGH AT GUYS WHO USE A AR 15 WITH THERE 14.5 or 14.5 PLUS a 2 1nch FLASHHIDER FOR HOME PROTECTION!!! AR/M16 M4 ISNT A HOME PROTECTION CARBINE THE MILITARY DIDNT MAKE THAT CARBINE FOR HOME PROTECTION OR CLEARING OUT HOUSE WHATS THE CAMMANO FOR HAPPY SNIC I WOULDNT CLEAR A HOUSE WITH A M4 T BUT I WOULD WITH A AR/M16 W/A 10 inch BARREL |
Hey, footyumpire is back! G |
Somehow, laughter based on ignorance doesn't bother me so much. Yeah - when we trained house clearing and urban combat military, they issued us all handguns. ![]() This thread is like a retard magnet. ![]() I DO have a 10" AR that I would most likely grab in an emergency - but I would still pick a 16", or even a 20" AR over a handgun. Handguns are cute, but NOT the weapon of choice when your life might be on the line. |
No, no, no...haven't you been paying attention. The true 'operators' with their SBR's would simply shoot each of your buckshot out of the air individually and then riddle you with holes with what remains in their mag. |
Yet another example of how people who don't understand the issues involved have to resort to ridicule to try to make their "argument" ![]() Nobody is saying that a shotgun is a BAD choice for home defense, but the fact is that a short AR (16" or less) is a BETTER choice. You don't want to spend the money on an AR, and the $200 tax for an SBR? Knock yourself out - a shotgun will be fine for most circumstance. Hopefully you'll never be in a position where you need more than 7 shots to defend your life and that of your family, and hopefully you'll UNDERSTAND that a shotgun WILL penetrate mutliple interior walls in a house, and that you have to be as accurate shooting a shotgun inside a house as you do with a rifle, because the shot doesn't "spread" significantly. But, feel free to resort to juvenile ridicule, if it makes you feel better about you trusty shotgun.

I guess it all depends on your strategy. For instance, I have an alarm system, two spitzes, and no children. For HD, I've got a 1911 and a Mossberg with #4 Buckshot. If someone gets into my house, either the alarm or the dogs will go off. If that happens, I'm not leaving the bedroom for nothing(dogs sleep with us). The wife calls 911 and I cover the door. Badguys are welcome to whatever they want as long as they don't open that door. I'll I'm not trained in house clearing, so I'm not going to try "going after" the BG. OTOH, if the wife "heard something" that's probably nothing, then I'll leave the room and look around, but I'm not going to investigate with a ten inch SBR with a surefire and infra red lasers because my wife "heard something". I'll just take the 1911. If I were to ever have children, I'd re-think it. |

Wow...this thread makes me want to laugh and cry. Personally, I think there are too many variables to determine what is the absolute best weapon for HD. But there are a hell of a lot of Good Choices and probably an even bigger amount of Bad Choices. Just imho.... Bad Choices: *Anything you haven't trained with a lot *Any firearm which has reliability issues *Any firearm loaded with an ammo that is significiently different than what you train with. *Any long barreled rifle, bolt action rifle, or rifle in .22 rimfire family. *Any shotgun in any gauge loaded with bird, trap, or any small or less lethal shot. *Any pistol in a caliber with less stopping power than a 9mm JHP. Good Choices: *Anything that is not a Bad Choice that you can get your hands on. Personally...when at home I keep my Glock 19 within reach almost all of the time. 147gr Hydrashok rounds are my personal favorite (because I can't buy Winchester Rangers). Silvertips are a good second choice. IF I have time to go to the safe, my Moss 500C is what I'm grabbing. The first five shells are 00 Buck reduced recoil LE rounds, and the last two are Hyrdashok sabot slugs. I figure...if I need to fire more than 5 shots...I probably need those last two slugs. "A pistol is just a tool you use to fight your way back to the rifle you should never have dropped in the first place." I forget the author of that quote...but I think they are wise words. Best Regards. Chris. |

A couple of people have said if they know someone is in their house they will stay in the bedroom and call 911. This is a good idea. But don't think the rest of us are Texas Ranger wanna be's planning to go after burglars like Chuck Norris on a bad hair day. What's happen to me a few times is that I heard a strange noise or something was out of place. I suspected someone could be in my house. So I decided to find out for sure. The last time this happened I came home and back door was not locked. We are pretty good about keeping them locked. This was certainly no cause to run out of the house and call 911 on the cell phone. I got the handgun I keep downstairs, went upstairs, got my AR and searched the whole house. No one was there. My wife had opened the door to air out some smoke from stuff that spilled in the oven and forgot to lock it afterward. Once I heard a crash in the garage. I grabbed a handgun and checked it out. I saw a stray cat run out of the garage. (No, I didn't shoot it.) Again not much reason to fear for my life but definitely worth checking out. You simply can't call 911 every time you hear a funny noise. You need a good firearm and a plan for searching your house. As long as you take it seriously each time it happens and don't get complacent it's good practice for the real thing. My saying is "Anything worth checking out, is worth checking out with a gun in your hand." |
| madmax7774 you're new around here so I'll be kind and simply point you to the box o truth. We ain't ignorant around here. |

"Shotguns are a nice idea, but I still think it's going to go through at least 1 or 2 interior walls before it stops. " 00 buck sure will...birdshot can...but its not really lethal if it does exit the sheetrock. Anything wtih stopping power will be a danger to neighbors and people in adjoining rooms...with the possible exception of a frangible pistol round like the Glaser safety slug...but I just don't trust those rounds. But I agree...regardless of the weapon...if you don't practice until its instinct you will be at a huge disadvantage. Take a look at the 21 foot drills done by Law Enforcement...trained officers have trouble getting a good shot off in time...so any of us civilians had better keep that in mind. I was never in the military or LE...but I take classes when I can and I practice a lot at the range. I work on drawing, double taps, clearing an FTF, tactical reloads, and even the dreaded double feed...though I can't really simulate that safely. And I still feel undertained. Best. Chris. |
This is the OTHER problem that people who think a shotgun with 5 rounds (or even 7) seem to forget. When your body is flushed with adrenaline, you've got tunnel vision, and you're in a dark, sometimes confusing environment - you are NOT going to hit everything you aim at. Having 30 "chances" to stop an intruder are simply better odds than having 7 "chances" |
Don't they call that spray and pray?? |
