You'd probably kill someone with a stray bullet if using a rifle. Shotguns are good for close range. It would also be a good idea to keep slugs on hand, just in case family members are in the same area as the intruder...

Oh good God !!

A slug will penetrate as much (or more) than a rifle round (over 12 sheets of drywall, with plenty of velocity left).  If you are worried about "strays" you REALLY shouldn't be using shotgun slugs.

Your statement that slugs would be superior to buckshot "in case family members are in the same area" suggests that you have a completely incorrect impression of how much a shot pattern spreads at close range.  If you are shooting a shotgun inside a house, you are not going to be looking at a spread of more than a couple of inches.

That is why you should practice.  If you hit your target, the round will have much less energy if it continues downrange.  BTW a shotgun has 9 or more "bullets" to account for, where the rifle has only one.

Shotguns are good for close range.
No argument there.

It would also be a good idea to keep slugs on hand, just in case family members are in the same area as the intruder...

Get real!  You aren't going to have the  time to change over to slugs in a HD situation, you are going to use what is already in the gun.  You should check the penetration characteristics of slugs, and the close range patterning of 00 Buck before you make this decision, and then choose your load accordingly.

A shotgun is best hands down. You can't beat it for close quarters contact which is why many MIL/LEO special ops teams use them as entry guns.  I don't care if you are a Navy SEAL Delta Jedi, when woken up at 3 AM, you are not on your A-game and your senses take a bit of time to adjust.  A good scattergun lets you point at center mass and shoot.  Use some Federal 00 Tactical and you are good to go.  In fact, many LEO will tell you that the sound of a pump gun being racked is generally enough to scare off most would-be invaders.  Also, any home defense gun should have a white light.  This is a must!  No questions about it.  You cannot take the chance that the bump in the night is really your kid coming home from their boy/girlfriend's house, or your wife getting a midnight snack.  Even if it is an intruder, you must be able to 100% identify the threat and that they have a weapon if you are going to be able to legally shoot them in most states.  I know that a lot of the hardchargers here will say: "if they're in my house, they're dead."  This is all well and good except for the fact that they are still going to get charged with a homicide (even if it was justified) and they are still going to have to stand trial to determine if what they did was justified.  If you end up blasting some punk teenager who broke a window and came in and was unarmed, chances are you will end up in jail for murder 1.  Bottom line:  my HD weapon is a Remington 870P MAX and a phone to call the Police.

Hate to break it to you but the shotgun isn't for close quarters "contact," it's for getting you to contact.  Military teams use shotguns for opening locked doors, either by blasting the hinges or the latch/strike plate area on the door and frame.

However, for home defense a shotgun is the way to go since shot pattern forgives innacuracy somewhat, and hopefully you will only need one or two shots.  As has been stated before in this thread white light is a must, as is accurate target ID.

All this police shotgun talk has got me thinking of the bean bag rounds and why the ATF considers them destructive devices lumped together with grenade launchers and 39mm rounds.  If I were forced to into a shooting solution with a shotgun I would like to know the BG is going to be taken out of the fight without question, but watching him take a bean bag to the forehead at close range would be alright too.  In the name of knowlege and science of course!

I would argue that a slug is actually safer than a .223 becuase it will go through the sheet rock in a straight line.  The .223 will tumble and you have no control over what direction it will travel in after it goes through the wall.

Of course the slug will continue to go in a straight line right through your neighbors walls too...  but I've never been too friendly with my neighbors anyway.

I'm glad so many people think their house will get broken into by a highly trained unit of delta force commandos and that a prolonged firefight will ensue involving multiple reloads of 30 round mags in their AR-15.  I'm trying to present a point that a 7-rd shotgun will be sufficient for home defense needs.  1 or 2 shots is all that is fired during a home defense scenario.  If  you need to fire more than that, you should consider aiming (which won't be a problem seeing as that so many people here think they will be sharp as a tack at 3 AM).  The point is shooting under stress and under fire is a lot different than shooting at the range or taking a carbine course here and there.  I'm not going to go into my personal experience here because it seems that it would just get discounted anyway.  Just because you own an SBR doesn't make you a green beret capable of shooting a "hostage taker" in a dime size window.  Guys train for years in Spec Ops units to be able to do this.  Joe-gun-owner isn't going to be able to make a shot like that.  I hate to break it to some of you, but home gunfights are not like the movies.

It's one of the early Bobcat BW-5FS,...I absolutely love it especially at half the price of a used HK94/MP5. Mine is a tack-driver at 25 yards with iron sights and my poor eyesight. I got 5 shots touching each other, wish I had kept the target. Absolutely No FTE/FTFs or jams of any kind.

this is not hijacking the thread. I think this is a great weapon for home defense. Only wish  could get a collapsible sock for it. Will SBR this soon and get a surefire fore-end for it.,Then it will be absolutely ideal...for me at least.

I am however fully on the shotgun for home defense thing....

Way i look at it is real simple... I hate being woken up and until I get the first cup of coffee in me I just don't care.... It's hard to focus when I first wake up because my contacts are still dry so I can't see real well. I'd much rather have a shotgun wiht a nice wide pattern than a single projectile that I have a better chance missing with and having to put more holes in my wall.

I know a lot of people like shotguns, I do too, but since my bedroom is upstairs and my room door is locked, it gives me a few more seconds to get ready. Shotguns are big and somewhat clumsy for me, I like small that's why I want a collapsible stock and to SBR it as well. The surefire light is essential, no scopes, laser designators, GPS, or computerizd fire controls for me . Simple and small is my philosophy. Other than the Bobcat, i would use a Krinkov for home defense.

All parts are interchangeable. The rear sight is real HK, so is the FCG I use HK mags on mine. You can use HK stocks and barrels but getting the kind of accuracy I get from an 8.5" barrel, I don't see a reason to replace it with an HK barrel.

Forget Vulcan....get a BW-5FS with the fake suppresor so you can SBR it later if you want and if it's legal in your state. The new ones have a different safety lever but otherwise they are the same.  Absolutely reliable.

If you really worr about overpenetration you can always get frangible bullets for it.

Well, I guess i gotta drop my .02 in here:

I have a couple of ARs, a couple of AKs and several Sig, HK, and 1911 handguns.  I also have a Mossy 590 shotgun.  I have no children, but live in a condo and do have neighbors.  I am by no means a HD expert, but I have shot enough shit in my day to know that ANYTHING that can be relied on to put an intruder down can go through walls (especially sheetrock which I can drive my bare fist through, and I am by no means Chuch Norris) So, my opinions are:
1.  Use what you can get to and are comfortable/instinctive with.  If what you can get to is not instinctive and comfortable to you CHANGE IT so that it is.
2.  Know the local laws in your jurisdiction, they do vary greatly.  Even when following the laws perfectly ultimately what you have or have not done will be judged by others.  It NEEDS to appear that YOU HAD NO OTHER REASONABLE CHOICE!!!  When there is no other choice fight with absolutely zero mercy until the threat is over.
3.  Understand you are responsible for any and all damage done to others and their property by whatever you choose to use defending yourself.  Property can be replaced, Innocent lives and health cannot.  Try to minimize the chances (no matter what there is always a chance) of this as much as you can.  For instance, dont use a RPG in an apartment building, you get the idea.

Finally, if you want to bypass a lot of this get a girlfriend like mine.  She may not work in every possible scenario, but if I have a home invasion if I can just get her to start talking to the intruder I absolutely GUARANTEE they will leave ASAP!!  I know this seems like an attempt at humor, but I am really not kidding very much.

A shotgun. The cheapest piece of crap you can afford to loose. Of course only if it works 100%. So get a cheap pump for reliability. I don't like keeping anything that heafty laying loaded next to my bed so I stashed away a $120 Makarov loaded with HP ammo. It will do the job the whole 2 yards across my bedroom. With the Makarov the only concern I ever had was under-penetration, but I don't think under-penetration will be a problem at 1-2 yards across my small bedroom. I don't have any concern with anyone walking away from an 8rd mag dump to the chest either. Nevermind that 1 stop shot BS, I'm not stopping until the mag is empty and I'm loading the second one! I keep all the expensive guns locked up because I don't want the criminals OR cops to take them after it's all over. The cops can have the $120 Makarov for as long as they like and I won't miss it like I would an AR or other $500+ gun. Just remember cheap doesn't always mean unreliable. I would trust my life with a Makarov within 5yrds. It's 100% reliable, has a very fast light weight trigger, and I am 100% proficient with it. The choice is up to you but I would go for cheap and 100% reliable then become proficient with it. Most people in the US have 50rds or less through their home defense weapon of choise. Whatever you decide on make sure you practice once a month or so with it and you will be better of than most people.

Yeah - because if my LIFE is on the line, I'm really going to worry about a little bit of potential hearing loss later.  Obviously, if hearing loss is a serious concern, then you should use a baseball bat with some 8-inch nails punched through it, for home defense, or maybe a nifty samurai-sword.

During my military career, I have been in close proximity to Ma Deuces, 7.62mm MG's and 84mm Carl Gustavs firing live ammo without hearing protection, so I don't particularly think that a 5.56 rifle without hearing protection is going to freak me out.  Perhaps some people would be frightened by that (and perhaps some believe that a shotgun is magically a lot more silent in an enclosed space ) - but I'm really not particularly concerned about that aspect.

As an aside (and not specifically picking on CCW) I really like these threads, because you invariably see a bunch of "Ah'll us mah trusty shotgun" types starting to ridicule people who recommend a short-barelled AR, instead of actually having a discussion about length, number of rounds, penetration, accuracy, etc - instead it's often just retarded knee-jerk reactions, hollywood logic, urban legends, and ridicule.

Nobody is saying that everyone SHOULD use a short AR for home defense, but if the general question is "what is the BEST weapon for home defense" - then the general answer is in fact a short AR.  If someone is really comfortable with a shotgun, then that's a fine choice, and will be perfectly sevicable in almost every situation imaginable - but it is still not the BEST choice, generally speaking.
1/14/2006 9:41:57 PM EDT

The "best answer" is the best weapon you can use for the application at hand.  If SBRs are not an option, they aren't the "best" for the job for you.  I opt for a pistol, 9mm hollow points.  My Sig P226 with night sights is on my bed stand.  I have practiced with it extensively, it points naturally for me, I'm comfortable with it.

I have a defense shotgun, but it is NOT my first choice.  If and when I move to a free state an SBRed AR is on my list to get right away.

It depends on the situation.

In my current living situation my housemates are closest to the door, the most likely entrance point due to the windows being higher then normal. So I'd want something precise because if they have a very malicious intent they will grab one of them. And a shotgun is NOT a fucking good idea ESPECIALLY with 00 Buck.

So in my situation, a rifle of some sort. Preferably .223/5.56 because it has LESS of a chance then most rifles of penerating the suspect (ammo permiting) after the damage is done.

Well, since this is an AR thread, my choice is a CAR-15 chambered for 9MM, which seems to work quite well in CQB scenarios and you don't have to worry about hitting the neighbor's dog a 1/2 mile away. Those super-juiced Hirtenberg 9MM sub rounds and +P+ USA hollow points can achieve some very interesting hit velocities coming out of a 16-inch barrel. With the blowback operation, there's nothing really to go wrong either. Gonna work pretty much every time which is the plan.

Some great posts here.  Here is a pretty cool thing (In my mind) that I did for home protection.  Not recommended for everyone!!

I do something that is a little off, but I get kicks out of it.  I am a police officer and I live out in the 'country' in rural Oklahoma.  I moved to the country about 5 years ago and there was a ton of drug traffic on the road my house is on.  It is a dirt road and it keeps the dope heads from getting on the highways.  I worked hoot shift then so my wife was always worried about the drug heads I arrest messing with our house or with her while I was at work.

Everybody knows how paranoid tweekers are and they are the main threat against my home being secure.  I played on their weakness....

What did I do?  I cut a piece of 1/4" sheet metal about 1ft X 1ft painted it white and shot it about 15 times then placed it at the end of my driveway where passerbys can see it.  My house is 232 yards from the road with no trees or any obstructions in the way.  I keep the target freshly painted and I put new holes in it  from my porch quiet a bit.  During the day time when I am home I sit on the front porch and have a rifle leaned up against the wall, and at night when I am home I keep a million power spot light by the bed and between midnight and 0430hrs or so I spot light cars driving by when I hear them.

Tweekers are the main ones to break into homes here, unless a ringer comes in from another town.  So my idea is prevention.  Hey don't laugh too much, all that spotlighting and documenting the cars/poeople I saw was enough to write a warrant on my neighbor.  He is in the pen for 18 yrs now.  And the traffic there is virtually zelch now.

I also have 4 barking outside dogs, one inside dog, and a wife that can shoot.

I'm the reason God made Oklahoma.

The weapon that you are most comfortable with, you practice with the most, and that you know how to use the best, that is in a potent enough caliber to get the job done.  Bet that a shotty, ak, ar, glock, etc.  Best weapon for the job depends on the user and his/her experience with the weapon.

Serious question:
For those who claim their AR is their home defense weapon, how do you keep it accessible? Is it loaded and unlocked under your bed?

I, for one, have a young child and would like to keep all my firearms locked at all times, at least until this child learns total respect for firearms. So my solution is a Sig P220 in a small, locked handgun safe that I can easily open in about a second. I can't think of any other way to keep my AR (or shotgun) locked, yet rapidly available.

Of course if I had some warning, or time, I would have a long gun at my side.

Sorry to answer this 3 days / 4 pages late, but I was out of town...

+1 on the 9x18 Makarov (I do NOT like the .380 ones). I fully trust my Maks with Barnaul HP's for close quarters stuff, including CCW when I don't want to lug the .45. Very controllable rapid fire  and extremely accurate due to the fixed barrel. In over 3000 rounds between a Bugarian Milsurp, and Russian 'commercial' models in both 8 & 12rd magazine models I have never had a jam or failure to feed/eject. Ever.  I do recommend a 19# barrel spring over the stock 17# fwiw.

BUT... If I hear 'em coming I'm going for the AR with a full mag of 75gr TAP and a bright-ass light - or using a pistol to fight my way to it I only kept the 12-gauge pump cause the GF is proficient with it if SHTF.

I have an uncle who honest to God keeps an AK-47 with a 75 round drum under his bed- you know just in case. This isn't including a fully loaded tac vest and a shotgun loaded in the closet. I joked that he should probably get his whole house wired just to be sure they don't take him alive!

Family- the only people you can always count on to be more nuts than you!!

I had always thought that the ultimate self defence gun was a shotgun, and I still believe that from a wound ballistics / practical point of view. However, a few days ago, I heard what sounded like a gunshot and some loud voices (arguing, hollering) which needless to say put me in survival mode.
It turned out to be nothing, but at the time I started thinking about getting something to keep close by just in case. Well, I had always said that I would use my 12 gauge primarily for home defence, but when it came down to it, I just didn't feel comfortable walking around the house with a loaded double barrel shotgun (Especially when I didn't fully understand the situation / threat)
That's when I got hit by a moment of indecision. I have so many guns, and all of a sudden I didn't know which one to go to. Ended up grabbing my .357 magnum and shoving it in the back of my pants.

I guess if someone is trying to break into your home in the middle of the night, the shotgun would be great. However, in those times when you just need a little something with ya "just in case" I think a handgun is the way to go. Maybe I need to think more about these things in advance, because when it comes to brass tacks, the last thing I need to do is hesitate and get myself or a family member killed. I think it is wise for people to develop a game plan in advance for different scenarios.
