[ARCHIVED THREAD] - BEST WEAPON FOR HOME DEFENSE (Page 2 of 8)
No, I'm familiar with the LP, "junior." (See, we used to have these things called "record players"... |
I'm not so sure I long for the days when most people got their (mis) information from the local gunstore owner and 350-lb ex-delta SEAL sniper at the shooting range. At least every time one of these threads comes up, someone MIGHT learn something, and debates like this have inspired Old_Painless' Box O'Truth, so people can go check out the FACTs for themselves, and make a much more informed decision about their home defense. I agree with you about the aliens. Those bastards! |
That's what good and whats bad with these threads. Hopefully people will understand the facts and impliment them instead of going by what Mr ex delta sniper or the local police officer friend tells us. It's amazing that people still think that they only need to rack a shotgun and the bad guy(s) will go running. While the sound of a shotgun being racked may scare off an intruder it's certainly not something anyone should even consider to be an effective tactic. If someone is their to do harm the sound of a shotty isn't going to scare them and it's only going to give away your location. |
Keep it plane and simple. Mossberg 12 gauge |
My shotgun is the most effective and safest home defense weapon I have. As a matter of fact, I don't even load it! If my house is broken into, I am just gonna run up and down the halls racking the damn thing until I find the thieving sumbitch lying in a puddle of his own piss crying for Momma to make the bad noise stop.![]() |
Remington 870 express with +2 extension and 18" barrel. I saw one at the local gander mtn last week and went back to get it yesterday. I snoozed and I loozed. |
| OK, this may be a little big for CQB work but I have seen them clear a house....and everything around it.http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Mark82ndABN/13872255-S.jpg |
| When something absolutely positively neeeds killin' grab a pump action shotgun!! In a stressfull situation at close quarters such as in a dwelling nothing else even comes close....and generally speaking just a sound of a slide racking is most times enough to send the bad guys running looking for a place to change thier drawers. |
| I'm glad so many people think their house will get broken into by a highly trained unit of delta force commandos and that a prolonged firefight will ensue involving multiple reloads of 30 round mags in their AR-15. I'm trying to present a point that a 7-rd shotgun will be sufficient for home defense needs. 1 or 2 shots is all that is fired during a home defense scenario. If you need to fire more than that, you should consider aiming (which won't be a problem seeing as that so many people here think they will be sharp as a tack at 3 AM). The point is shooting under stress and under fire is a lot different than shooting at the range or taking a carbine course here and there. I'm not going to go into my personal experience here because it seems that it would just get discounted anyway. Just because you own an SBR doesn't make you a green beret capable of shooting a "hostage taker" in a dime size window. Guys train for years in Spec Ops units to be able to do this. Joe-gun-owner isn't going to be able to make a shot like that. I hate to break it to some of you, but home gunfights are not like the movies. |

This would be nice... "Doberman or two" http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/ctay20/m4dogs8tz.jpg but to avoid over penatration I use this... http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e218/ctay20/minpin.jpg |

there is no shotgun pistol or rifle that WILL NOT SHOOT THREW A WALL....the problem with a 00 buck shotgun is that its unacurate and if he has ur son or daughter hostage u run the risk of shooting them too...a pistol is another great answer but less accurate then a rifle, and also a 45 acp will go threw more walls then a 223..a short barreled ar 15 is another good answer but its heavyier then a pistol but more acurate and will still go threw most of the walls in your house ....the answer is 2 things 1 what your most comfortable with using for home defense 2 what you have the most training with i use a SB ar 15 |
Sure they are, they just edit out the part where your loved ones get hit by stray pellets. When you fire "1 or 2 shots" out of a shottie, that is a bunch of deadly projectiles you have to account for. A short rifle, 14.5", 16", or smaller bbl is easier to shoot accurately in confined spaces, and you are accountable for just one shot at a time. ETA- CTay, that is a sweet little SBR you got there! |
It's so nice to see people resort to ridicule instead of realizing that they might not be as well-informed as they initially believed. ![]() If you are going to make the argument that you shouldn't PREPARE for a worst-case scenario (of say, mutliple armed intruders with body armor) because it has very low probability, then you might as well not prepare for ANY home invasion, since they are also very low probability. Sure, one is more rare than the other, but both are extremely rare. As a logical argument, that just doesn't hold any water. If you are going to bother to prepare for a home invasion, why only prepare for a subset of the likely home invasions. Why not look at the home invasions that do occur, and be prepared to handle most cases that you might be unfortunate enough to be face with?If you personally feel happy being prepared for the TYPICAL home invasion, or SOME home invasions (in which you will be able to neutralize any imaginable threat with 7 rounds) then good for you. Others may choose to be a little more conservative when their life is potentially on the line. I'd rather have 30 rounds available, and only need 7 - than have 7 available and need 8. You are the person who made the statement "A shotgun is best, hands down. You can't beat it for close quarters contact" as a response to what is the best home defense weapon. That's an absolute statement, and it is not correct - despite your claims about what "Special Ops" teams and SWAT teams use as "entry guns". What exactly are you planning on "entering" in a home defense situation? Need to shoot out any locks or hinges? Sounds like you're the one who is imagining some scenario based on the movies or TV or who knows what. You were also the one to claim that :..a good scattergun lets you point at center mass and shoot" - which suggests that you don't have a whole lot of experience shooting shotguns at close range, because you'd realize that in room-sized ranges, the scatter is MINIMAL, and you pretty much need to be able to shoot as accurately as you would with a rifle. I base my choice of SBR on the prgamatic choice that it is more easily meanoeverable than a shotgun, has more rounds, can be fired faster, and does almost as much damage at close range as a shotgun. If I am PLANNING for an unknown situation, it would be completely insane and irresponsible to limit myself to 7 rounds if I could have 30. It's THAT simple. You want to limit your chances of survival to 7 shots, feel free. I'll stick with 30 and a smaller firearm. |

My opinion, FWIW: Handgun: more easily accessible home protection, at least for me . I have a handgun safe that I can unlock in 1 second. I have no such easily accesible storage for my shotgun. 12 guage pump: this would be my weapon of choice for in-home protection if I had time to access it. What's the old saying? "Use your hand gun until you can get to your long gun" AR-15: Protection of outdoor property, and a SHTF weapon. |
Yup 00 Buck will go through about 6 or seven sheets of drywall. If it doesn't hit a stud, that is three interior walls. ![]() A slug will only be stopped by a brick wall, and will easily go through over 12 sheets or drywall. Like someone else said earlier in the thread - if it can STOP an intruder, it can go through a wall (or two or three). |
I know, actually, in real life there are a lot more shots fired, fewer hits and alot less nudity. Actually, I'm not sure about home defense, but for office work Rubber bands work pretty good with the co-workers. |
Buy yourself a Remington 870 and build one of THESE . My next projecct. ![]() Gene |
Should we start a new thread? What is the best clone optic for my tactical rubberband shooter? Also what is the best length of rubberband to use for home defense?
|
COOL IDEA! Lets see some pics of short barreled tactical rubberband guns painted cammo tigerstripe with Norrels and sporting a bipod. Maybe we can get a "Box O' Truth" test to see how many walls a rubberband gun will go through..This is good stuff here. |
DKProf, you Ignorant Slut! |
But won't the intruder hear the click of the switch on the Aimpoint when you turn it on? |
