I received my M600DF Friday and got it mounted up on my MRP duty rifle with a Haley offset mount.  Mine has the “0618” stamped battery, so when I first got it, I turned the M600DF on without charging the battery and just let it run and it ran for about an hour before it died, so I think it’ll be okay.  I did go ahead and order two spare batteries to have, that way if I did have an issue with the Surefire, I’d have spares.  I ended up buying a couple of the Lliion protected Panasonic batteries listed below.

I've continued testing all of my Surefire 18650s and found a faulty battery with a 0318 date as well.

I got an initial response back from Surefire already asking for more info, but nothing else yet in a week.  I figure while I wait (for what may be a long time) on these 4 getting replaced under warranty I'd try some other protected cell 18650s.

Apparently the consensus is that the panasonic 3400mAh is the best but I find some bad reviews where apparently the protection circuit is chinese made or the batteries are crap and potentially chinese clones.

Is there a known, good, safe vendor for legit protected cell Panasonic 18650s with no chicom crap?

There is definitely a battery issue with the surefire battery. They stated to me that they were in the process of redesigning their battery.
Surefire themselves recommends the Orbtronic battery

From my testing, some Surefire batteries get the lights hotter than others.

Some of them overheat it quickly causing the shutoff.

Others are a bit more sneaky and need to be on a bit longer.  For the batteries that "passed" my 25m straight run time tests there are some I have more confidence in than others based on how hot to the touch they could get the lights.

My 1117 marked battery technically "passed" but if I leave it on close to something reflective it WILL shutoff also.  It also gets the lights a touch hotter while running.  Probably not an issue since just being left on and sitting it is ok but I don't know, I have my 600DFs mounted near a suppressor.  In real use I can see it possibly overheating.  So for now I have it in my Fury since I doubt it will have issues there.

EDIT:  I see there are also 3500 mAh units available from Orbtronic.  Think I'll get those.

There is enough of a button for the DF head?  They also have a 3500maH version.

If that is indeed the button top battery that they sell then yes. The pictures in the ad do not show the positive side so I'm going off of the description only. I suspect these are both the same exact battery underneath the wrap.
I also do not know if the 3500ma battery will fit in the light but if it does then it looks like a fine battery on paper and should work well.

I ordered one of the fancy chargers with the LED readout to give you stats on the batteries too, the OPUS 3100.  Looked at two others, Liitokala and something popular on Amazon with a Z.......seems you roll the dice on any of them.

Anyway, I'm interested to see what kind of stats it can give me on the "bad" batteries.

A surefire rep responded that they will goodwill me some batteries (with no need to send in these faulty ones)  whenever they get some more in.  That means I can keep these to play with and see what went wrong.

I have used the same Nightcore digicharger d4 for all of my charging needs for years now. It charges anything you can fit in it (Li-ion, Ni-MH, Ni-Cd, and LiFeP04) including Eneloops (which I use in place of all AAA and AA batteries) without having to mess with any settings. It's also cheap and time proven. I'd suggest it to anyone looking for a good charger that is versatile and will likely last and long time.

Everyone always measures them in mm, my dial calipers are in thousandths.

The length is normally the factor when an 18650 is too large for what it's worth. So did the 3500ma work out?

Make sure you’re careful choosing a charger, the correct charger is almost as important as making sure that your batteries aren’t counterfeit or crappy Chinese ones. (Yes, almost all of them come from China but there are major differences between brands)

Finally pulled the trigger on an M600DF after seeing them in action a few times...
what should I plan on running into? Got the rechargeable "set" off amazon.
Do any of the switches reduce the potential output? Looking at the dual switch to run a laser as well.

What do you mean when you say "running into"? Hopefully your light works so you wouldn't have that issue.
Also no Surefire switch will reduce the output in any noticeable way.

I received my order of two from Lanbo’s yesterday. The battery dates are 03/18 and 05/18. I charged them both in one of the provided chargers and observed no issues with overheating as reported by other members. I installed the batteries and ran them both for 15 minutes without issue. I’ll update if any issues arise.

Kind of fucked off right now. 18650 battery does not work. Works with 123s. Flickers off and on while racking or shooting, sometimes dims really low until next shot... not happy at this point in time.

I'm assuming this is a Surefire labeled battery? Did you charge it upon receiving it? Can you check the voltage by chance? Try cleaning the battery and light contacts with alcohol.

The many issues seen just by the folks that have replied in this thread in the past few months about Surefire's 18650 batteries is not typical of a reputable manufacturer. Not even a little. Any reputable company that buys and relabels Li-Ion batteries with this many complaints would quickly be blacklisted by communities that commonly use Li-Ion batteries. With that said I realize that this is a ar-15 community first and also that the folks that have issues with a product normally speak louder than the many who have none. I have no proof here but I believe that Surefire is using lower binned 18650s, rewrapping them (they do not manufacture batteries and never will), and selling them under their good name as a quality product. I cannot find any of the typical Li-Ion battery testers who have tested Surefire's 18650 so little to no real date is out there on these batteries. If anyone has a defective battery that is of no use to them please unwrap it (following all safety precautions) and post detailed pictures of the bare cells here. I feel like we could at least gather further info given the manufacturer of these batteries and maybe push a reputable battery tester to take a look at them with all of these complaints and something to go on.

Yes, it is a SF battery. Putting it in SF charger does nothing... Sat overnigh. Status lights do not even change when inserted. Did not clean contacts but there is no residue as far as I can tell... possibly worth a shot? Doubt it. No meter on hand.

I have some 3.7v batteries and charger at work for the H&K Bluefire guns, might have to test it out.

Got my 4 replacement batteries today and they indeed have been redesigned.

They are red and longer.  Marked 3.6v 3500 mAh instead of 3.7v 3400 mAh.  Micro-USB rechargeable, not that I care about that.

All marked 1018 which is strange as I have a few "old style" batteries with that date code.

Surefire claims 1200 lumens on CR123 vs 1500 with Li-Ion. Their lumen numbers tend to be correct so that is very likely true numbers. With that said 1200 vs 1500 lumens is noticeable but only just. Most people likely wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you had both the 1200 and 1500 lumen light side by side. If I were to choose a weapon light to only use CR123s then this one would be high on my list.

@762AR25's assumption is correct here. The 3.6v vs 3.7v means nothing in this case. Also I'm fairly certain that these new cells Surefire is using are in fact re-wrapped Sanyo NCR18650GA cells (~$6 on sale at times). I personally think that the on board USB charging is a gimmick that should be avoided if possible. It's safer to charge any Li-Ions used in a multi cell Li-Ion device at the same time in the same charger so they can be "married" to one another. They're safety reasons for this that I won't get into here. With that said I would comfortable both using the new Surefire cells with my normal charger and also having to charge with the onboard USB charging in a pinch if needed.

Thanks. I will likely get into Li-Ion rechargeables eventually but for my SHTF fantasies it must work with CR123 first and foremost.
