[ARCHIVED THREAD] - M16A5 Stock from VLTOR (Page 2 of 3)

I put my BCM A4 upper on another lower. Then I slapped my EMOD stock body on there. Its just a regular six position tube setup. It looks kinda goofy. But when I shoulder it I don't care what it looks like anymore. I care how it works. The adjust-ability is a plus when you're wearing armor or going prone. And I can hand it to my female partner and she can adjust the thing for her. Another plus. She just can't do an A2 stock very well. One size fits all sucks when you're talking about guns.
I still like the A2, but this has me thinking..... |

I don't think they're available yet. Not available on VLTOR's website yet. I ordered one in tan a few weeks ago, it's currently sitting on my receiver Is that the one on the rifle Bob is building for you? Yeahh buddy! ![]() Well you better be in the gym, because its not so LIGHTWEIGHT! BTW Bob did some amazing work on the trigger. Your going to really like the final product. |
| I am trying to understand how this new buffer/receiver extension works. It appears from the pictures that the added length of both the tube and buffer is the same resulting in the same length of travel for the BCG. The only significant change to the operation of the system is the spring compression. What am I missing? |

The only significant change to the operation of the system is the spring compression. What am I missing? That's what I was thinking. If you run a standard length carbine tube with carbine length buffer that weighs the same as this new buffer then the spring is the only difference I see. As you said the stroke is the same. I don't see how it could run any smoother or softer than a carbine setup. I am open to the idea that it does something different but I don't see how. Seems like if you used a AR-10 carbine tube you would gain a little on length, then run a cut down rifle length buffer with this new spring. |

The only significant change to the operation of the system is the spring compression. What am I missing? Rifle receiver extensions, springs, and buffers are the best for reliability. This receiver extension, spring, and buffer are just like the rifle system except the front non-functional part of the buffer is removed and the receiver extension is shortened by that same amount. This receiver extension uses the same spring, has nearly as much buffer weight, and has the same length of travel as a rifle system. The advantage it has to a rifle system is that it uses collapsible stocks. The advantage it has to a carbine system is that it is more reliable. Dustin |

as odd as it sounds in my head when described, that actually looks neat to see a real picture.
It'll look something like this. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4895174208_bde489f7f4_b.jpg |

It'll look something like this. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4895174208_bde489f7f4_b.jpg You know I'm a tall guy. I was over 6' 4" once and then had a neck injury. I lost about an inch, and gained a metal plate and two screws in my neck. I shoot NTCH, and I find that the adjustable stock gives me a much better length, especially shooting prone, and the big EMOD makes it much easier on my neck. It does look different then what you are used to, but it really does work. |

I've got a brand new M5 RAS sitting under my desk, I'm just too cool to install it |

It'll look something like this. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4895174208_bde489f7f4_b.jpg I've passed it around several times now. First impression - from old timers - they hate it. Then they shoulder it. Game over. A true example of function over form. Although I like it. |

The only significant change to the operation of the system is the spring compression. What am I missing? the longer spring when compressed over the range of motion from the action of the gun, has a spring coefficient that works better than the carbine ones. Its more consistent. The more you compress a spring, the more it pushes back. Since in a rifle stock, the travel is(just say)20% of the overall spring length, its more consistant than a carbine that is compressed(just say) to 50%. This new system is somewhere in between. I dont see how it could actually be better than a rifle though. The rifle can be tweeked to have the same or better numbers. |

Has anyone tried an ACS on the A5-length RE? Does it collapse completely?
I'm very interested in the new A5 kit for one carbine I'm planning in particular, but I'd also like to consider converting at least one of my ACS equipped carbines to the new recoil system to get some experience with it. |

I wonder if this system would tame down my Stag Model 8 piston gun? Or maybe just get a heavier buffer would help. I was looking to get and Emod stock anyway. No, it won't. Try the heavier buffer. ![]() I took a look at 87GN's blog, unless I read it wrong, running an A5 with the heaviest buffers did indeed tame the pistons. |
